STATE PODIATRY NEWS
CPMA Thanks State Representative for Podiatric Advocacy

The Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA), comprised of more than 200 doctors of podiatric medicine, has recognized State Rep. Themis Klarides for her advocacy of common sense, patient friendly healthcare policies. During the 2018 Legislative Session, Klarides advocated for passage of legislation that updates the scope of practice of podiatry to make their surgical services more available to patients in Connecticut. The provisions were included in House Bill 5163, now Public Act 18-168, which was signed into law by Governor Dannel P. Malloy.

Dr. Joseph Treadwell

“Connecticut’s podiatric doctors provide leading medical care in the foot and ankle to thousands of patients in the state. We appreciate Representative Klarides’ expertise and knowledge of healthcare issues and for taking positive and proactive actions to improve the system for Connecticut consumers,” said Joe Treadwell, DPM, the group’s legislative chair.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OH Podiatrist to Hold Annual Halloween Candy Exchange Party

Podiatrist Dr. Bruce Blank’s annual Halloween Candy Exchange Party slated for Sunday will mark the foot doctor’s 21st year of holding the event for local children with diabetes. Blank said the party will be held in the reception area outside of his office. There will be games, prizes, entertainment, “spooky music,” pizza by DeFelice Bros. Pizza and more. Children who have diabetes and their families are welcome to dress in costume for the event.

Children can bring in their Halloween candy to exchange for a goody bag from Blank. “The reason we do it is because children who have diabetes are relatively few and far between. If you’re the only kid in school who has diabetes, you tend to feel a little out of step and maybe not like the other kids,” Blank said.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Association of Prescribed Exercise in Addition to Compression With VLU Healing

The authors of this study analyzed five randomized clinical trials comprising 190 patients with venous leg ulcers (VLU) to evaluate the association between exercise interventions (used as an adjuvant therapy to compression) and VLU healing. The pooled risk difference for any type of exercise was an additional 14 cases of venous leg ulcers healed per 100 patients at 12-week follow-up (RD, 14%; P=.04). Progressive resistance exercise (heel raises) alone showed a non-significant pooled risk difference; however, this exercise in combination with prescribed aerobic physical activity showed a significant increase in ulcer healing at 12 weeks in one study.

The pooled risk difference for a combination of progressive resistance and prescribed physical activity was an additional 27 cases healed per 100 patients at 12 weeks (RD, 27%; P= .004). There may be sufficient evidence now for clinicians to consider recommending simple progressive resistance and aerobic exercises to patients with VLU.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Back Office Billing Strategies - Part 2

2. Reconcile encounter forms and bill claims daily. If there are any questions about the services rendered, seek clarification from the provider. Your billers should be knowledgeable about appropriate modifiers and when to use them. Make sure your billers are submitting clean claims. Clean claims get paid the first time around and stand up to a potential audit.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Podiatrists' Median Income

I am writing questioning podiatrists’ annual median income. I read on PM News from Career Cast's top 10 highest paying jobs that podiatry is #8 at $124,830. My associate is starting his 4th year with me and is asking for a substantial raise. He is already making above this amount. He quoted research that he has done from Salary.com that states the median base salary for our area is $192,738, which I can’t fathom is correct. Can anyone comment on this large discrepancy?

He is generating income for the practice but is falling short on some of his duties. He comes to work late. He works his shift but nothing more. He is not doing any marketing. He is not following protocols. He has a base salary and has a bonus structure. I am having a hard time giving him a raise with the information that I read on PM News

Name Withheld

Editor's Note: The Annual Median income for a solo practitioner reported in Podiatry Management's Annual Survey was $123,250.
