NY Podiatrist Explains Differences Between Podiatry and Medical School
Podiatrists typically earn six-figure salaries, according to compensation statistics from the American Podiatric Medical Association. Those pay figures reveal that, in 2017, 57% of podiatrists had salaries between $100,000 and $250,000, and a quarter of podiatrists had salaries of $250,000 or higher.

Dr. Sophia Solomon |
One key difference between what a student will learn in podiatric med school versus traditional med school is that podiatry school courses focus primarily on the lower body, whereas traditional med school classes focus on the entire body. "Our education differs from other physicians mainly in our second two years of podiatry school where we shift our focus to the lower extremity pathologies and treatment," said Dr. Sophia Solomon, a board-certified podiatrist with Manhattan Foot Specialists in New York City

Hospitalizations for Infection Rising in Diabetes
Excess infection-related hospitalizations among adults with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the United States did not drop during 2000-2015, and they actually increased for foot infections, cellulitis, and pneumonia among young adults with diabetes vs. those without it. Existing standards of care do not focus on infection prevention in people with diabetes.
Between 2000 and 2015, hospitalizations increased from 63.1 to 68.7/1,000 persons in adults with diabetes and from 15.5 to 16.3/1,000 persons in those without DM. Increases were observed for sepsis, influenza, kidney infections, osteomyelitis, and cellulitis, especially in young adults with diabetes.

HealthCare.gov Premiums to Fall 4% in 2020
Health insurance premiums for benchmark Affordable Care Act exchange plans will decrease in 2020 for the second year in a row, and most shoppers will have more plan choices. The average premium for the benchmark health insurance plan on HealthCare.gov for a 27-year-old will decline about 4% to $388 per month compared with plans sold this year, according to the CMS.
For a family of four, premiums will decrease 4% to $1,520, though most people shopping on the exchanges receive subsidies to help afford the premium costs. The number of health insurers selling plans in 2020 will increase to 175 insurers from 155 in 2019.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
7 Conveniences Patients Expect from Today's Medical Practices - Part 3
Today’s patients expect the same conveniences from medical practices that they receive from restaurants or retailers. If they don’t get them, they will find another doctor. If practices want to compete in today’s healthcare environment, they need to offer patients convenience. Here are the top 7 things patients expect from their doctor’s office.
3. Minimized Wait Times - Patients expect the doctor to see them within about 15 minutes of their appointment time. They have little tolerance in their own busy schedules for physicians who run late or overbook. To mitigate the issue, consider implementing a system that texts patients updates on wait times, allowing them to adjust their arrival to reflect the doctor’s current schedule.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) - PART 1A | |
From: Bill Beaton, DPM
We switched to PracticeEHR in December and find it to be very user-friendly. We used Practice Defenders, a third-party to transfer our data and it went very smoothly and was much more economical than paying thousands of dollars for our data. Our schedule exported to an Excel spreadsheet, so it transferred over nicely, but we still had to make manual changes and verifications.
PracticeEHR has built in templates for podiatry visits and they have someone who works with you to customize them. Our digital x-rays import nicely as well. I recommend that you look at a demo of their system.

From: Brian Kiel, DPM
We use NextGen for our EMR and use Entrada virtual scribe for our data entry. I no longer have charts to do at home or on the weekend. I see 40-45 patients daily and am able to keep up using the virtual scribe app on my phone. If anyone has questions, please feel free to contact me.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Burton Katzen, DPM
As president of the Academy of Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery, it is very reassuring to see that such well thought of and respected podiatric surgeons as Dr. Kominsky and my old friend Dr. Laporta now embrace the concept of MIS. MIS has become an accepted standard of care for foot surgery by orthopedic and podiatric surgeons throughout the world. This is evident by the increasing number of both national and international orthopedic surgeons, along with podiatrists, who attend our biannual meetings in conjunction with LSU Medical School.
Even though I agree with Dr. Kominsky that every foot case might not be treated with MIS, I believe we can all agree that this should become a part of every foot surgeon’s armamentarium. As popular as these techniques are internationally, they will only become mainstream in this country when they become part of the podiatric college and podiatric residency curriculum. Many of the questions still surrounding MIS seem to concentrate on fixation and long-term results, as discussed on this forum. Once again, the Academy makes no recommendation on fixation as a standard of care. This is the surgeon’s choice.
Burton Katzen, DPM, Temple Hills, MD

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
From: Kim Antol
The Apus PXP-15HF is manufactured by Poksom in Korea and distributed nationally by United Radiology Systems in Deerfield IL. Unfortunately, Pokom discontinued the product about 5 years ago, but United Radiology (their U.S. component) may still be able to help.
You say “the x-ray images are diminishing.” This may not actually be an issue with the x-ray generator, but rather your old DR (direct radiology) plate, which is typical of some of the early systems that were sold.
Kim Antol, President, Sigma Digital X-Ray

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
I’m questioning why podiatry does not have specialties as dentistry does. This ignores a rather large elephant sitting in our living room. Dentistry has true specialties. There are periodontists, oral surgeons, endodontists, pediatric dentists, etc. The one difference between dentistry and podiatry is that dental specialists limit their practices to their specialties.
If one goes to an endodontist for a root canal, or an oral surgeon for an extraction, those dental specialists would never be caught filling a cavity or making a crown for that patient. If he or she did, they could kiss their referral base goodbye. Podiatry is different. There are those who have greater training in surgery, biomechanics, pediatrics, or dermatology but I have yet to hear of any of my colleagues, outside of the academic arena, who limit their practices to any one area of specialization. Perhaps Dr. Levy could offer us some insight into why podiatry has not generated the types of limited specialty practices that we see in dentistry and medicine.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

From: Bob Hatcher, DPM
Having traded the podiatry office for the woodshop nearly two years ago now, I did no small amount of research on dust collection systems. The individual in the link here, having done his research with a pulmonologist, convinced me to be serious about the system I installed. Perhaps, it will also be useful to those still considering a dust collection system for their offices.
