|
|
Dr. Nicholas Romansky |

ND Podiatrist Discusses Consequencess of Wearing Tight Shoes
Wearing shoes that are too tight is an absolutely miserable experience, even for just an hour—but what if you’ve unknowingly been wearing the wrong shoe size for years? “The wrong shoes can lead to bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis – a lot of foot pathologies,” podiatrist Burkley Jensen, DPM, tells Sanford Health.
|
|
Dr. Burkley Jensen |
“It is important to match your activities with the right shoe. If you have any concerns with your current foot deformities or pain, then a visit to a podiatrist can help in getting some guidance on whether your shoes are playing a part or if they would have a role in fixing the problem.”

Bako Diagnostics Celebrates Milestones
Celebrating their 16th anniversary, the Bako Diagnostics team is grateful for their continued partnership with the podiatric medical community. Bako's physician-clients and their staff have allowed BakoDx to play a critical role in the care of your patients. Bako looks forward to their continued support of the profession through education and advocacy!
|
|
Recent BakoDx mini-fellowship residents, Alexandra Anain, Husang Lee, and Madeline Walkner. |
BakoDx is also celebrating their Podiatric Dermatology Mini-Fellowship Program, which has served as the premier pathology rotation for podiatry residents across the nation for the past 14 years. The program consists of a fully funded two-week rotation where podiatry residents sit one-on-one with Bako’s dermatopathologists, and experience lectures and discussion regarding podiatric dermatology as well as non-dermatology cases. They review basic lab operations, where they follow specimens from receipt to plating, and ultimately to final diagnosis. In addition, residents are exposed to specialized testing techniques, such as ENFD, immunohistochemistry, mass spectrometry, and state-of-the-art, real-time PCR/DNA testing.

Owner of Canadian Foot Clinic Charged with Voyeurism, Other Crimes
The owner of a Prince Edward Island foot clinic embroiled in allegations that he was working as a podiatrist without any formal credentials has been charged by Charlottetown police with several crimes unrelated to his podiatry practice. John Johnson, 26, was arrested and charged with trespassing, mischief, voyeurism, and committing an indecent act. He is also facing allegations that he called himself a doctor and performed medical procedures on hundreds of Islanders' feet without having any formal credentials.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
How to Renegotiate Payer Contracts
If you feel stuck in a lousy deal with your payers, you can re-negotiate. Here are some steps to renegotiate your contracts and improve your revenue.
3. Let the games begin - Once you have assembled all of your data, you can compare each payer to one another. Now you have the information you need to begin the process of re-negotiating your contract with a specific payer. Initiate the process according to the terms of your agreement but do so with a formal notice. Pick a payer that you think you’ll be able to get the desired changes from. It might be based upon the fee schedule, the time to the end of the contract, or the volume of business you do with them.
I recommend starting with payers that offer the lowest rates and those with the least amount of time left on the contract. Research who you should send the notice to and ask for confirmation of receipt. Send your notice to as many people at the payer’s organization as possible.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) | |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
With 40 plus years of experience, the simple procedure using phenol is 99% effective in my hands for nail removal. Having said that, I see so many poor results and failures from other podiatrists doing this procedure. The explanation for me is simple... these doctors could care less and do sloppy work. While I am sure there will be doubters to what I have written, I stand firmly on my opinion. If you want excellent results, take your time, be careful, and have pride in your work.

From: Shawna Shapero
Like Dr. Arnold Signer, I am saddened to see the recent announcement of the closure of Gordon Laboratories yet happy for SuEllen and Dave on their decision to retire. In their 60 years of service to the podiatric medical community, Gordon Labs has generously given back to the profession in ways too numerous to be mentioned in one place. Thank you for setting the standard for everyone involved on the commercial side; truly the end of an era.
Congratulations on your retirement, SuEllen and Dave. Gordon Labs will be missed.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) | |
From: Greg Caringi, DPM
After closely following PM News for many years, I know my commentary is not new and unfortunately reflects the feelings of many podiatrists who are now at/near retirement age. These thoughts have been woven into many previous threads.
Many say that the early growth of podiatry was because our profession filled patient needs not being adequately addressed by other medical and surgical specialties. When podiatry was still struggling for recognition and parity, we were all encouraged to learn and use those skills to make us stand out as specialists who could offer options that were not readily available from other medical specialists, such as...
