STATE PODIATRY NEWS
CPMA Recognizes State Representative

The Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association, comprised of more than 200 doctors of podiatric medicine, has recognized state Rep. Pam Staneski for her advocacy of legislation that updates the scope of practice of podiatry to make their surgical services more available to patients in Connecticut.

Rep. Pam Staneski

The podiatrists also praised Staneski’s opposition to higher taxes on healthcare and medical professionals. Proposals for a “medical provider tax” have been discussed at the legislature for a number of years but were not enacted during the deliberations over reducing the state’s budget deficit. The group also thanked Staneski for her support of adequate funding for the Medicaid program that provides healthcare services to hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents. Podiatric services are provided to enrollees of the program.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
OR Podiatrist Relocating to New Zealand

Dr. Stacey Clarke, a local podiatrist, will soon be practicing in New Zealand. “I had been wanting to do patient care, and I wanted to look outside the traditional U.S. model because of insurance,” Clarke said. “Online, I found all kinds of recruiters and options.” She uploaded her resume to a recruiter in New Zealand, and three weeks later she had a job offer. Not having been in the job market for 28 years, she didn’t know what to expect, so she was pleasantly surprised.

Dr. Stacey Clarke

“I had a WhatsApp interview with the CEO of the company and the co-workers, and the rest of the process has been trying to get my work visa,” she said. Once Clarke has her 30-month work visa in hand, she has 60 days to get across the water and set foot in the country. Dr. Clarke said she looks forward to living in a different country with a multicultural environment, which includes Pacific Islanders, the indigenous Maori and the Kiwi people. In contrast to the U.S., New Zealand has a public health system, and she is eager to learn about that, too.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
“Walking is America’s cure for obesity and mental health”: OH Podiatrist

The City of Delaware and the Delaware County Diabetes Association (DCDA) have joined together to combine two events into one big party. Saturday, Oct. 27, the city will host both the Pumpkin Run 5K and the Sweet Feat 5K Walk, which will be held at Mingo Park. “With exercise, the habits should start young,” DCDA President Jane Graebner, DPM said. “Exercise has to become part of everybody’s lifestyle, and when you can do it as a family, it no longer is drudgery. It’s a way of enjoying each other and be a part of the community, and it’s for a good cause.”

Dr. Jane Graebner

Dr. Graebner, a podiatrist who owns the Foot and Ankle Wellness Center located in Delaware, has served as the president of DCDA since 2015. She said the Sweet Feat Walk is DCDA’s biggest source of exposure and strongly believes “walking is America’s cure for obesity and mental health.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 3
Woman Drives Car into MI Podiatry Office

A Bruce Township woman drove her Jeep Grand Cherokee through the outer wall and window of a podiatry office in Sterling Heights on Monday morning. The woman was entering the office of Foot & Ankle Specialists of Southeast Michigan’s Sterling Heights/Troy office at approximately 8:30 a.m. when the driver apparently confused the gas pedal and the brake, causing the vehicle to lunge forward into the building and crash into the lobby.

Woman Drives Car into MI Podiatry Office

Sterling Heights police confirmed the accident but could not provide additional details. An employee of the clinic who contacted The Macomb Daily said no one was hurt. Dr. Eric Kissel was on hand to help remove the women from her car and check for injuries. “We were not expecting to start off the work week in this manner,” Kissel said. ”However, we are very thankful that no one was injured and that we have the resources available to still assist patients counting on us for their podiatry needs.” All patients scheduled to see the podiatrists were quickly moved to the Foot & Ankle Specialists’ Warren office just a few miles away.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Limb Preservation Center Named After Canadian Podiatrist

Physicians, Calgary Health Trust brass and members of the Zivot family gathered Sept. 26 at Peter Lougheed Centre for the naming of the Zivot Limb Preservation Center in honor of the donor, Mark Zivot, DPM. The centre will continue to provide care to patients through podiatric surgeons along with a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to reducing the impact of lower limb amputations.

Dr. Mark Zivot

This generous $1-million donation through Calgary Health Trust will help to enhance world-class care for patients managing diabetes and vascular disease and at risk of amputation of feet and lower limbs. The Limb Preservation Center opened to patients in October 2016, and will continue to provide care to approximately 6,500 patients each year.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Front Office Billing Tips - Part 4

If you want your billing and collections to be as smooth and effective as possible, you need to make sure everybody on your team is doing their part.

4. Double-check before patients leave the office. When patients get to check-out, your front desk still has to complete a few remaining billing tasks. Have the staff review the superbill or encounter form. Collect any additional money due from self-pay patients or procedures that were performed beyond a standard office visit. Make it as easy as possible for patients to pay. Allow payments through mobile devices, credit cards, patient portals, and also by old-fashioned bank checks. If the patients cannot pay in full, refer them to the back office to get on a payment plan.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICKPOLLS)
From: Michael Forman, DPM

I used Dragon for approximately two years. I recall speaking to a Dragon rep who promised me a 99% accuracy rate. I am not sure what my average length of a dictated note is currently, but I know that our notes are longer and longer. If the Dragon promise of 99% accuracy is true, you will have one error in your transcription in a 100-word note. You can do the math for longer notes. So, you say, one mistake isn't so bad. In Helsinki, Donald Trump mis-spoke the word "would" for "wouldn't", which changed his entire presentation. You get the idea. I am addicted to cable news which provides closed caption viewing. I am sure a cable network used the best closed caption software possible, yet some of the messages are incredibly wrong, sometimes hysterical.

I know you are going to advise me to re-read my note, and of course that is the best option even if we do not use voice activated dictation. My problem with that is - I don't want to. I would like to hear which audio dictation system my colleagues find best. Yes, you can teach on old dog new tricks.

The Passing of Jeffrey J. Bernardone, DPM

Dr. Jeffrey J. Bernardone of Mansfield, 60, peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. He was a graduate of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and completed his residency there.

Dr. Bernardone had a private practice in Quincy, worked at the VA hospital in Boston, and was affiliated with Quincy and Carney hospitals and several nursing homes on the South Shore until he was stricken with MS over 23 years ago.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

It is always sad to see friends for many years pass away. Dr. Stuart Bass will be greatly missed as he was the rock who kept the podiatry alumni associations from both Civic Hospital and Kern Hospital active for many years. He was also very instrumental in the education of many podiatrists in the residency programs, primarily in the Michigan area, as well as other regions in the country. I extend my deepest sympathy to his loving family. Stuart will always be remembered as a wonderful person who will be also missed by the podiatry profession.
