| MEETING NOTICES | |
Maryland/DC Scientific Meeting Held
The Maryland/DC scientific meeting was held last weekend. Byron Hutchinson, DPM was the keynote speaker. He reviewed the 10 things he has changed over the course of his career. He said he finds K-wires to be the most consistent fixation for hammertoes. Joel Morse, DPM moderated a dermatology panel that included Scott Norton, MD who related his experiences setting up a field dermatology pathology lab in Desert Storm. He was able to establish an insect cause rather than chemical weapons for a leg rash .
|
|
Attendees at Maryland/DC Scientific Meeting |
Ben Pearl, DPM, reviewed regenerative medicine options. He spoke about managing expectations with level of activity and related a case of an Olympics hopeful who returned to box jumps early after regenerative treatments and sustained a calcaneus avulsion fracture. He also said that the intervals between applications of skin substitutes require careful management, as there can be biofilm and drainage that must be addressed. Brandon Blanken, DPM discussed the importance of screening, ranging from limb-length discrepancies to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Priya Parthasarathy, DPM reviewed protocols for radial and focused shockwave.

| ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT | |
CA Podiatrist Keynotes King's College Limb Preservation Symposium
The 11th King’s International Summit on Modern Surgical Reconstruction and Multidisciplinary Care of the Diabetic Foot brought together global leaders in limb preservation for two days of intensive discussion, innovation, and collaboration at King’s Place, London. Co-directed by Professors Mike Edmonds and Venu Kavarthapu, the meeting’s theme — “Breaking the Chains of the Diabetes Amputation Crisis” — underscored the urgent global call to reduce preventable amputations through multidisciplinary care and technology-driven prevention.
|
|
Dr. David Armstrong |
Among the keynote presentations was Dr. David G. Armstrong, Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Neurological Surgery at the University of Southern California, who delivered his address, “Breaking the Chain of Diabetic Amputations.” Armstrong emphasized that progress against limb loss depends on “reconnecting the science of healing with the systems of care that make it scalable.” He described the growing convergence of regenerative medicine, connected health, and real-time patient monitoring — the “continuum of remission” — that enables people with diabetes to enjoy ulcer-free, hospital-free, and activity-rich days.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Ways Better Scheduling Boosts Patient Satisfaction
From communication to consistency, these strategies help you strengthen patient loyalty — and your revenue cycle.
3. Predictability prevents burnout
Unpredictable schedules are a major contributor to physician burnout. When appointment types are mismatched to time slots, the entire day can snowball into a cascade of delays. Building realistic scheduling templates that account for average visit length, brief buffers between appointments, and structured break times helps physicians stay on pace and end the day closer to on time.
Predictability doesn’t just benefit physicians — it also allows nurses and administrative staff to manage patient flow with less stress and fewer overtime hours.

| FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY | |
The 7 Worst Assets to Leave Your Kids or Grandkids
Leaving these assets to your loved ones may be more trouble than it’s worth. Here's how to avoid adding to their grief after you're gone.
2. Potentially valuable collectibles
Whether it’s gold coins, rare out-of-print books, or a fine piece of artwork, there’s something special about seeing your wealth in a beautiful physical form and then imagining handing it off to your loved ones so they can enjoy it too. Another advantage of leaving collectibles as an inheritance is that it can help with taxes.
The capital gains tax rate on collectibles can go up to a maximum of 28%, significantly higher than the maximum 20% long-term gains rate on other investments. When you die, your heirs receive a step-up in basis, meaning when they sell, they receive tax-free what the collectible was worth on the day you die.
Still, there are some substantial risks to leaving valuable collectibles as an inheritance. First, there’s a much higher chance that your heirs could overlook or lose these valuable assets, especially if you’ve hidden them. Another problem with collectibles is that they’re tougher to value. It’s not like a bank or brokerage account where your heirs can just see the balance. Instead, they’ll need to go to a dealer and if they meet up with the wrong person, they can be taken for a ride.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1A | |
From: James DiResta, DPM, MPH
I want to respond to the recent discussion and comments made by Larry Oloff and Rod Tomczak. I think it important for PM News readers to understand that both men have made a great contribution towards the advancement of our profession, and although in reading their comments one might think them very much apart, I feel if they sat down together, they would be able to come to some 90% consensus on this issue. I was 2 years behind Larry at Temple (PCPM) and he has done our profession proud, and he is correct when he looks and sees how far our profession has come and the major milestones we have made.
Our present cohort of practicing podiatrists are in a very good place at this point in time, but we can not ignore the present crisis in student recruitment which frankly can lead to our demise as a profession. At this same period, Rod was a resident...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1B | |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
Larry, I am really happy you replied to my thoughts concerning ACGME and COTH. Larry, not many guys have the same quality program you do. I think we have known each other since the early 1980s and our conversations have almost always been about podiatry, podiatric education, and the way it should be. ACGME could walk into your residency tomorrow for a surprise inspection and you’d pass with flying colors. Your standards are impeccable. If the rest of the profession ran a program like yours, no residency director would have the slightest qualm about letting ACGME have a look see at what type of residents they are preparing for practice.
That’s where I have a problem. Why can’t every podiatric residency be of your program’s caliber? Every director should be proud to show their goods to an outside, overwatch agency composed of strangers, not fellow podiatrists who are residency directors. I still posit most DPM schools will eventually...
Editor's comments: Dr. Tomczak's extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1C | |
From: James F Dancho, DPM
If what Dr. MacGill and Dr. Tomczak say about the COTH survey are true and valid, why is it important for anyone to be part of something (like COTH) in this profession (especially if we are dues-paying members) to simply express their opinions. Time for us to mature and work together. Open your minds to the possibilities.
James F Dancho, DPM, Tucson, AZ
