UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine Helping Fill Need for Podiatrists
Diabetes is common in the Rio Grande Valley, and it's known to cause foot problems. There's a need for foot doctors and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is working to fill the gap. Catherine Flores is a high school student, but she's already thinking about her future in the medical field. That's why she and her father were part of an open house held by the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine. They wanted to learn more about their academic program. On Saturday, another student, Colton Warren, learned about reviewing bone samples under a microscope, an important step to detect different types of foot problems.

Dr. Javier La Fontaine |
UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine Dean Javier La Fontaine, DPM says these tools are essential to not only prepare the future podiatric surgeons, but to also keep them here in the Rio Grande Valley. "So they don't have to leave the Valley, right? They don't have to leave our families, so we can go to school here, so that's why we hope to change the Valley. We also started a residence program, in the Rio Grande Valley, so most of the students that go to residency, they end up staying," Dr. La Fontaine said.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Ways Better Scheduling Boosts Patient Satisfaction
From communication to consistency, these strategies help you strengthen patient loyalty — and your revenue cycle.
2. First impressions start at scheduling
Before a patient ever meets their physician, they’ve already formed an impression of the practice — and it often begins at the front desk. Whether through a phone call, patient portal or self-scheduling app, the ease of booking an appointment signals how the practice values accessibility. Long hold times, confusing prompts or inconsistent follow-up can drive patients elsewhere.
Training staff to be proactive, empathetic and solution-oriented during scheduling interactions helps create a welcoming experience that sets the tone for care.

The 7 Worst Assets to Leave Your Kids or Grandkids
Leaving these assets to your loved ones may be more trouble than it’s worth. Here's how to avoid adding to their grief after you're gone.
1. Timeshares - A timeshare is a long-term contract where you agree to rent out an annual trip to a resort or vacation property. These contracts last for decades, sometimes for life, and are notoriously difficult to get out of. Even if you love your timeshare, think it’s a great deal and have had plenty of amazing memories, be very cautious about leaving it to the next generation.
“If you pass away and your kids inherit the timeshare, they’ll be on the hook for the ongoing — and ever-increasing — contract costs,” says Neil V. Carbone, trusts and estates partner at Farrell Fritz in New York. “Some sellers even encourage buyers to put their young family members on the deed when they sign up for that very reason.”

| VA PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS | |
From: Evan F. Meltzer, DPM (retired)
Congratulations to Dr. Quijano on his appointment of Chief of Staff at the Iron Mountain VAMC. Podiatrists have been deemed qualified for such a position for several years but the appointment of Dr. Quijano is the first podiatrist I’ve heard of who was selected for this prestigious position.
I hope to see further announcements of podiatrists who also have been selected for leadership positions in the VA, including becoming the Director of a VAMC.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) | |
From: Lawrence Oloff, DPM
Passion is not a bad thing except when it becomes an obsession, lacks reason, and does not have respect for others’ positions. Rod, that is what your passion has become. I apologize if this seems a bit harsh, but when you begin to accuse residency directors who are opposed to ACGME do so because of their wallets is concerning. This is just plain insulting and has no basis in fact. There are three residencies where I am a program director: Orthopedics, medicine, and podiatry. All three PDs get a stipend, whether they are ACGME or CPME. As a PD for many years, I can assure you that the time and commitment is well beyond any stipend.
I cannot imagine anyone who would not make more money if that same time were spent in private practice. Every year, my wife and adult children chastise me for the off-hours time spent educating residents at the expense of...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) - PART 1B | |
From: H. David Gottlieb, DPM
My experience interacting with externship over the last 20 years is that there has always been a mix of student intellect, abilities, and desire to excel. Over the last few years, I have seen a widening of the bell curve. The best students on the whole are better and the students at the bottom even worse. Additionally, the students who have been accepted to 'my' program in Baltimore have all shown either above average to exceptional intellectual ability.
Over 20 years, I have noted changes in overall attitudes towards work both from CPME requirements as well as in generational shifts. CPME is now mandating, on average, limited working hours very different from the past. The days of allowing residents to work 16 or 18 hour days are over. Do I agree with that? No. But, you know, it is what it is. I learned to deal with it (with a head shake nearly every day). I suggest others do as well. The work gets done, cases are covered.
Stop beating up on our future. Learn to adjust to reality or YOU will be the one left behind (and consider self-pay practice as was done years ago).
H. David Gottlieb, DPM, Baltimore, MD

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) - PART 1B | |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
It seems to me that if a podiatric resident did not eat lunch yet, this is a valid complaint. As a podiatrist in private practice, I have the right to choose not to have lunch if my patient load gets too crowded. I choose to ensure my schedule does not interfere with my lunchtime. Podiatric residents should have the right to choose to eat lunch without being criticized for being hungry.
Furthermore, they should get as much sleep as needed to maximize their ability to work without making podiatric medical mistakes. Sleep is important for anyone to function to the best of their ability. If every residency director allowed residents to get up to 8 hours of sleep when needed, enough time to eat, perhaps patient care given by podiatric residents would improve.
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgewood, NY
