NH Podiatry Practice Expands Services After Hospital Closure
In the wake of the recent announcement that Exeter Hospital (recently acquired by Beth Israel), will be closing Core Podiatry and several other services, From the Ground Up Podiatry and Barefoot Medical Spa are stepping in to fill a critical gap in patient care. Led by podiatrists Jim Dolan, DPM and Julie Shaheen, DPM the practice has responded swiftly to the influx of former Core Podiatry patients, scheduling urgent appointments for those most in need, including diabetic patients who require timely, specialized foot care.

Since the announcement, From the Ground Up Podiatry has been receiving nearly 200 calls per day and has already scheduled over 100 new visits for patients previously seen at Core Podiatry. This rapid response was made possible by the unique partnership between From the Ground Up Podiatry and Barefoot Medical Spa, which allows patients to choose between medical podiatric care or specialized care from the skilled nail technicians at Barefoot Medical Spa, depending on their immediate needs.

WY Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to 4 Counts of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse of a Minor
A podiatrist who practiced in Gillette and Douglas was accused of sexually abusing a girl over the span of eight years, and he has pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor. Craig Capron, 59, pleaded guilty to groping a girl over and under her clothes and masturbating on her thighs. The state will recommend a six- to 12-year prison sentence, followed by a supervised probationary period.

How to Renegotiate Payer Contracts
If you feel stuck in a lousy deal with your payers, you can re-negotiate. Here are some steps to renegotiate your contracts and improve your revenue.
1. Do your homework - Start by locating your contracts and, if they don’t already have one, give them a designated place in your office. If you cannot locate the agreements, request copies from payers. Gather all your contracts, review the terms, and know the effective dates of your contracts. Study your payer mix and learn who is your largest payer. Create a database where you can track the terms of every contract and when each is up for renewal. Keep copies or detailed notes of all interactions with your payers, including the last time you re-negotiated the contract.

RE: Physician or Allied Healthcare Provider?

We are convinced that we are physicians. Unfortunately, the rest of the world has not universally been persuaded to classify us as such. It’s not so much what the 40,000 or so of us call ourselves, but what does the rest of the world call us? Why is there a reluctance to move us from the allied healthcare provider column into the big boys’ physician column? I always look at economics as a reason for most social problems, then move to self-esteem issues before considering what may be the truth. One horrible truth is that there is nothing we do that other physicians or healthcare providers can’t do.
I was on the admissions committees at both Des Moines University College of Podiatry and the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Yes, there are vast differences. That is not to say that students at the podiatry colleges could not...

As a certified professional coder and someone who has reviewed the Arche LEAP Vitals+ Program, I agree with Dr. Edwards’ assessment. The program provides the user with real-time physiologic findings. Following the guidelines for an E&M visit provided by the AMA, if a provider has a diabetic patient (chronic illness) who may have exacerbation or progression and this patient may need a prescription based on the findings when performing the tests within the program, the patient will meet the requirements for an E&M.

In a recent post, Dr. Freireich said, "If APMA promotes an Annual Comprehensive Diabetes Prevention Foot Examination, I hope they also promote that the exam is not covered by insurance, unless things have changed since this issue was also brought up."
Actually, there has been some progress in gaining covered podiatric Medicare diabetes amputation prevention examination coverage. Although we have not yet succeeded in gaining coverage for a comprehensive diabetic foot examination (CDFE) to screen for many potentially hazardous lower extremity problems, podiatrists can now be well reimbursed when providing...
