TX Podiatrist Uses Nerve Graph to Treat Neuroma Pain
A local resident who was once suffering from pain so great she was considering how to end her life is now living pain free, thanks to a pioneering medical procedure from a local surgeon. Beth and her surgeon, Craig Thomajan, DPM of Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists, are joining forces to increase awareness of a new procedure that can help those who may be living with chronic pain.
|
|
Dr. Craig Thomajan |
"When a nerve is damaged due to a traumatic injury or during surgery, a neuroma can form as a consequence. In order to resolve neuroma pain, you need to remove the nerve. We then insert a nerve graft to bridge the gap and provide a healthy structure for the nerve to regenerate,” says Dr. Thomajan.

Top Tips to Boost Billing and Collections - Part 2
2. Talk to your patients in an effective way.
-
Make sure your staff knows how to communicate with patients about their bills. Never ask patients whether they want to pay their bill now.
-
Instead, offer a choice of two options for paying. Assume that they're going to pay and ask them if they prefer to pay by check or credit card.

Presenting Your Medicare Case to the ALJ- Part 19 (of 20)
47. Should you ever begin your presentation to the judge with arguments not related to the QIC denial reasons? No. Do not begin the letter brief or your presentation to the judge with arguments not related to the QIC denial reasons. Whether the judge is reading your letter brief or is listening to your oral argument during hearing, she will be focused on the QIC denial reasons. You want to be focused on the same thing the judge is focused on.
48. Does a display of emotion help convince the judge your argument is the more correct of the two opposing arguments? No. And the ALJ does not want drama. You may be outraged by the conduct of the carrier and the QIC but the ALJ will only be outraged if you start behaving emotionally. The ALJ is simply doing her job and will be very annoyed by an emotionally charged presentation.

RE: Mental Health Resources
From: Jean Chen-Vitulli, DPM
During this COVID-19 crisis, many families are suffering financial hardship. Isolation and stress can lead to depression. As a healthcare provider, we try to be empathetic to the trials and tribulations the patients are undergoing. However, if we can direct them to proper resources, it may ease some of the burden, stress, and worries. I would like to share some of the resources available with you to those in need.
|
|
Mental Health Resources |
Please be aware of local food banks near you. Patients often choose between medications or paying for food. As such, potential future complications can arise. If you can provide a list of local food banks, there will be more financial resources for their medications to sustain their life. In New York state, NYProjectHope.org offers a confidential emotional helpline to cope with stress brought on by COVID-19. For veterans and service members, there is a list of mental health resources from Mentalhealth.gov/get-help/veterans. Don’t know where to start? Go to nrd.gov

The recent posting regarding a patient not wearing a mask was wrong in so many ways. This is a life or death situation. It is not a hoax and it is not a situation that is negotiable with a patient. The safety of the doctor, the staff, and the other patients is of paramount importance and anyone who comes into my office comes with that understanding. We post the rule on the outside of the door. If someone comes in without a mask we will offer one. If refused, they will be told once and then escorted out.
There is no alternative and that is absolute. Let them sue. I would rather them sue than a patient that contracted COVID-19 and sued us for allowing a non-masked person into the office. There should be no discussion or trying to talk to these people. It's your office; you make the rules.
Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN

From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
Dr. Williams queried on proper billing of an Akin and Cartiva implant procedure. Dr. Zlotoff indicated in his response most insurances might bundle the two and advised to send an op report, etc. in an attempt to get paid for both procedures. I am not sure if I am in the minority or majority but I find it absurd that we as a profession are constantly facing these types of situations. An Akin is usually performed for a transverse plane deformity of the toe. A Cartiva is usually performed for eroded cartilage of the first met head. The deformities are two different deformities. I don’t care if they can be performed through the same incision.
When the painter comes to the house and he is painting two adjacent rooms - you still get charged for both rooms. Go tell the painter he should do the second room for free as he is there anyway. Our profession needs some self-respect. If someone made this rule, the rule should be challenged and explained why it should be changed. It amazes me how the profession just accepts everything as given. The brainwashing that everything should be done for free must stop. If you do the work you should get paid. You spent enough money and time in residency that this nonsense needs to end.
Jeffrey Kass, DPM, Forest Hills, NY
