VA PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
MI Podiatrist Appointed Chief of Staff at Iron Mountain VA MC

The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center has announced the appointment of Victor Quijano, DPM, PhD as the chief of staff of the facility effective Oct. 6. As chief of staff, Dr. Quijano oversees all medical staff including physicians, dentists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other specialties. In addition, he supervises support services including radiology, health profession trainee education, and credentialing and privileging.

Dr. Victor Quijano

Dr. Quijano has over 22 years of healthcare experience, eight of which are in leadership roles, both in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the private sector. Prior to assuming this position, he served as the deputy chief of staff – hospital services at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. In addition, he previously served as the chief of surgery in Colorado and chief of podiatry in Portland, Oregon.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
VA Podiatrist Runs to Re-gain Seat on Augusta County School Board

Tim Simmons and John Ocheltree, DPM once again face off in 2025 to represent the Pastures District on the Augusta County School Board. The two candidates ran against each other in 2021, with Simmons emerging on top. Ocheltree was the incumbent at the time. Dr. Ocheltree had served on the board for 12 years, serving as the chair and vice chair of the board during his tenure.

Dr. John Ocheltree

Dr. Ocheltree is also a podiatrist who works in the area. Unlike his competitor, he has no children actively in Augusta County Public Schools. He has grandchildren in the system, but all of his children have since graduated high school. In Ocheltree’s eyes, he said the school board seat requires a lot of engagement in the community — something he criticized Simmons for not doing. Ocheltree described his campaign as a focus on the people.

MEETING NEWS
Keeping Ischemic and Threatened Extremities Safe Meeting Held

Jake Wynes, DPM chaired the annual Keeping Ischemic and Threatened Extremities Safe (KITES) meeting this past weekend at University of Maryland SMC. The conference featured podiatrists, orthopedic surgeon, plastic surgeons, and a CRNP. Dr. Wynes said the goal of the conference was to present speakers who could offer their real world experiences regarding limb salvage. Michael Berger, DPM, referenced David Armstrong’s 2020 paper that found that almost 1 in 3 patients with ulcers had a 5-year mortality rate of 30%, and those who had major amputations had a 70% mortality rate.

Dr. Jake Wynes checks a cortical bone graft.

Ron Sherman, DPM spoke on kinetics and kinematics of ulcers. He noted that emphasis has been hyper-focused on sagittal plane mechanics. He discussed use of custom orthotics to address shearing forces that have not been properly addressed. Byron Hutchinson, DPM spoke on the changes that have occurred with Charcot construction concepts that used to favor primary bone healing with AO fixation and now have embraced secondary bone healing with limited motion around the axial skeleton.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Ways Better Scheduling Boosts Patient Satisfaction

From communication to consistency, these strategies help you strengthen patient loyalty — and your revenue cycle.

1. The cost of disorganized scheduling

Every missed appointment, idle exam room or late start carries a hidden cost. Studies show that even one daily no-show per provider can add up to tens of thousands in lost annual revenue. Beyond finances, disorganized schedules increase stress for staff, delay patient care and fuel frustration across the practice.

Physicians who consistently analyze appointment data — including show rates, average visit length, and peak demand hours — are better equipped to build efficient templates that turn wasted time into productive time.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
6 Steps to Protect Your Retirement Savings

Eager to protect your savings from the dangers that seem to be lurking everywhere lately? Financial advisers say that these are your best moves now.

6.  Consider the what-ifs

What's the worst that could happen if a recession, prolonged bear market or spike in inflation comes to pass? Although it may seem counter-intuitive, thinking about how the economic scenarios that worry you could play out and how you would manage the personal fallout can be an anxiety-reducing exercise, advisers say.

Take the market outlook, for example. While stock prices bounced back quickly this year from their April slump, a downturn historically is more likely to last about 18 months, and stock prices were down or sideways for more than a decade in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Dr. Walter Suber

During the 1960s, he was director of the Florence Junior Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Florence Lion's Club. In 1964, he was recipient of the coveted Jaycees' Distinguished Service Award. He served for many years as president of the South Carolina Podiatric Medical Association. In 1979, Governor Richard Riley appointed Dr. Suber to the State Board of Podiatry Examiners.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION)
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

Dr. MacGill, thank you for the recent COTH survey you shared with us. I have some questions perhaps you could answer before the profession places credibility in what you shared with us.

1. What is your position within the Council of Teaching Hospitals? I do not see your name listed as a member of the Council.

2. Who commissioned this survey? Did you take up this task by yourself? Did you send out a survey to every podiatric residency director in the U.S.?

3. How many times..

Editor's note: Dr.Tomczak's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

Wow, Dr. Feinman hit the nail on the head with his assessment of the quality of students rotating through his program. How sad, but according to my inside sources this is a reality.

Besides poorly qualified students being accepted into the schools, the complacency factor is a whole other matter. There needs to be a shake-up or Dr. Feinman is correct that patients will request other providers, and our reputation will take a dump as a profession.
