NY Podiatrist Discusses Importance of Buying a Good Running Shoe
According to podiatrists and runner Douglas Tumen, DPM of Hudson Valley Foot Associates, "Buying the right running shoe is an important way to prevent running injuries. If you have on the wrong shoes, you risk injury. If you're in old shoes, your risk of injury goes up. The first thing you have to do is invest in a good pair of running shoes. There are many wonderful brands that offer more shock absorption, more protection and support, and they do make a big difference."
|
|
Dr. Doug Tumen |
"Buying the right running shoe can be very confusing, particularly because so many people are buying them online. If you're buying from a name brand, you can't go wrong as long as they fit comfortably and have enough room in front," says Dr. Tumen.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Top Tips to Boost Billing and Collections - Part 1
1. Educate Your Patients
-
Insurance is complex and is getting more so. Patients could use a bit of schooling. Co-pays, deductibles, and other medical billing terminology can be a bit of a mystery to most people.
-
Consider printing a simple flyer that explains billing basics that can apply to any insurance plan. Direct patients toward the customer service number on the back of their insurance cards for more detailed questions.
-
Educating patients on where to get more information can also help improve patient relationships. Patients often blame the doctor when billing problems are really between patients and their insurance provider.

Presenting Your Medicare Case to the ALJ- Part 18
44. What should you do with your expert before the hearing? Write out all the questions you want to ask your expert in front of the ALJ. Then write out all the answers to those questions. And review all the questions and answers with your expert before the hearing.
45. Why is it a bad idea to ask your expert any new question during the hearing? You may not like the answer. Most healthcare attorneys will tell you they never ask their expert a question during an ALJ hearing if they don’t already know the answer to the question.
46. What if an issue has been discussed but is not yet checked off on your list of issues? Do not waste the court’s time by covering issues that have already been addressed in response to the judge’s questions.

Query: Akin and an Implant
I have a patient who will undergo a Cartiva implant procedure for hallux limitus/rigidus at the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint. He also has lateral deviation of his hallux on the same foot and an Akin osteotomy will be performed to address this deformity. Should the Akin osteotomy be billed as a separate procedure or is that considered unbundling?
Dave Williams, DPM, El Paso, TX
Response: I think you will find that most insurance carriers will only pay for the phalangeal osteotomy of the hallux if performed “separately” as an isolated procedure of the first toe. Since you are performing the implant on the first toe joint, it would most likely be combined with the primary implant procedure and not paid. You always have the option to ask for individual consideration if there are extenuating circumstances. If you decide to go this route, provide a copy of the operative report and a cover letter describing the unique situation that deserves additional payment. Request peer review from the carrier.

RE: The Passing of Frederico Hernandez, DPM
It is with great sadness that I learned that Dr. Frederico Hernandez passed away due to COVID-19 on September 9, 2020, after 55 years in private practice in El Centro, CA. He was the last practicing podiatrist from the CCPM class of 1965. He was instrumental in establishing the first podiatry clinic in Mexico or any foreign country 45 years ago. At the time, this provided an incredible opportunity for podiatrists not only to give back, but to utilize all of our skills. For many years, this was the only international project that had podiatrists performing complex surgeries, at a time when many podiatrists were still fighting with their local hospitals for the right to perform forefoot surgeries.
|
|
Dr. Frederico Hernandez |
Fred was from El Salvador and 25 years ago the project established a clinic in El Salvador. A few years after that the project had clinics in Honduras and Nicaragua. This clinic provided advanced training for literally 100s of residents, from all over the nation. He never seemed to lose his love for podiatry and often he would call me in the evening, while he was still in the office, to discuss a patient or a procedure. He always participated in our local podiatry society, both professionally and socially. He will be missed by many.

RE: Forensic Gait Analysis: Principles and Practice, Edited by: Ivan Birch, Michael Nirenberg, Wesley Vernon, and Maria Birch
From: Carlos Silva, DPM
Forensic Gait Analysis: Principles and Practice provides an introduction to the relatively new, emerging field of forensic gait analysis. The book provides the history of forensic gait analysis, basic gait knowledge, and the current scientific standards one needs to perform forensic gait analysis, which is typically done by analyzing an individual recorded on video. The science has been used widely in the United Kingdom, and with the increasing use of video recording, the use and need for forensic gait analysis is growing throughout the world.
The book comprises writings from the foremost experts knowledgeable in forensic gait analysis, including chapters written by forensic podiatrists. The chapters include...
