KSUCPM to Open Wound Care Center
The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine is teaming up with the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic to help reach a segment of the population that may not otherwise receive care for wounds that fail to heal. Beginning Oct. 24, Kent State will start enrolling patients in a clinical trial at the new Wound Care and Research Clinic inside the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic in downtown Cleveland. The goal is to bring advanced clinical trials and cutting-edge therapies to patients suffering with non-healing wounds. These advancements will be offered free of charge to patients who qualify.
|
|
Dr. Windy Cole |
“Given the climate of healthcare today, the increasing need for advanced wound care therapies in this growing patient population, and due to the unlimited potential opportunities to establish Kent State’s College of Podiatric Medicine in this evolving sector in both clinical research and publishing, we saw the need to open a wound care and research clinic,” said Windy Cole, DPM, associate professor and director of the Wound Care Program in Kent State’s College of Podiatric Medicine.

Kent Perfusion Imaging KD203 is FDA-Cleared
Kent Imaging gas announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared their multispectral Medical Imaging Device (KD203). Kent's device is the next step in perfusion imaging by directly showing tissue oxygenation. The KD203 provides insight into the availability of oxygenated blood in tissue, which enables accurate diagnosis, improved treatment planning, and effective patient monitoring.
|
|
Dr. Adam Landsman |
"Using the Kent camera, we can quantify perfusion directly by determining the ratio of oxygenated to deoxygenated hemoglobin," said Adam Landsman, DPM, PhD, Chief of the Division of Podiatric Surgery at the Cambridge Health Alliance (Harvard Medical School). "Furthermore, because the data can be collected in less than a second, the device can help to quantify the effect of our treatments, and allow us to easily monitor the patient's condition on a regular basis."

Things to Ask Your EHR Vendor About Security - Part 1
1. "Are you installing the latest security patches?"
That's one of the first questions physician practices should be asking their EHR vendors, says Gerard Nussbaum, principal at Zarach Associates, a Chicago-based healthcare consulting firm. He's taking his cue from recent news about the security breach at Equifax, which exposed 146 million Americans' financial and personal information. The company's CEO lost his job, as did other executives—and the publicly-traded company's stock was dealt a blow after news hit of the security breach. Before Congress in September, former Equifax CEO Richard Smith traced the vulnerability to the failure of a single employee to install and test a patch for a web application.

| CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Coding Diabetic Ulcers Along With Circulation Issues
In the ICD-10 coding webinars, the coding was listed with the atherosclerosis I70- series code first, then the ulcer code, L97-, followed by diabetes mellitus with foot ulcer, E11.621. Would it be appropriate to code E11.621 first, then the specific L97- code followed by E11.51 or E11.52 for diabetes mellitus with circulatory complications to cover the peripheral vascular disease?
Mary Gail Kwiecinski, DPM, Libertyville, IL
Response: The ICD-10 instructions for E11.621 say, “Use additional code to identify site of ulcer (L97.4-, L97.5-).” Therefore, your scenario of coding is correct; you would bill:
E11.621
L97- (requires additional characters for specificity)
E11.51 (or E11.52)
in that order on the claim.

| QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) | |
Query: Osseous Cysts Discovered During Bunion Surgery
The patient is a 56 year old healthy female teacher. A large osseous cyst in the head of the first metatarsal was discovered during scheduled bunion surgery. This cyst was not obvious on pre-op x-rays. It prevented the planned metaphyseal osteotomy of a modified Austin-style bunionectomy (“chevron”) as well as a possible Scarf procedure. The patient did not want a more proximal osteotomy (CBWO, Lapidus, Cotton) that would cause prolonged disability. Demineralized bone matrix was placed in the defect.
What is the consensus of podiatric surgeons in this presentation? I suggested a Mau-type osteotomy to help reduce the abnormal IM angle, thereby avoiding any osteotomy of the capital region. Post-operative weight-bearing on a protected basis would then be permitted. Is anyone performing the Mau procedure?

RE: Potential Legal Consequences After PAL's Demise
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Over the past few weeks, numerous podiatric forums have run advertisements attempting to attract former PAL customers. While the demise of any successful business is often sad, this one particularly hits home for me and many of those in the orthotics business. PAL was the company which first sponsored many of my lectures and has funded many podiatric educational forums with other vendors.
Many of PAL's former employees have climbed the executive ladder, reaching prominent positions with other medical manufacturers and...

From: Ron Freireich, DPM
Thank you for your response, Dr. Lehrman; however, you have completely missed the major point of my posts. I appreciate the timeline of MACRA that you spelled out, but my posts had nothing to do with that. Regarding your comment about the time I spent “crafting” my posts not making a difference, you’re right, it didn’t because you failed to even mention the MedPAC report in your response, which is what my posts were all about.
I never mentioned the lack of any medical association, including APMA not speaking out or lobbying against MACRA. That is in the past. My posts had to do with the...
