IN Podiatrist In Critical Condition After Motorcycle Crash
A Delaware County motorcyclist remains in critical condition after an accident Friday at the intersection of U.S. 35 North and Round Barn Road north of Richmond. A spokesperson for Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH, said Dr. Thomas E. Freeman, II was in critical condition Saturday afternoon. Freeman was taken to the hospital by air helicopter after the accident at 5:44 p.m. Friday. Freeman is the podiatrist at Preferred Footcare of Muncie.

VA Podiatrist Comments on ACA
Guest speakers podiatrist Dr. Stanley Idiculla and Community Care Clinic Chief Executive Arlene Jacovelli highlighted the weaknesses of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and recommended significant improvements at a healthcare educational gathering hosted by Virginians for Quality Healthcare (VQH). Idiculla explained the challenges of keeping a medical practice solvent with all the law changes – primarily additional paperwork requirements and expenses required to satisfy them. The time doctors and medical staff spend on administrative record-keeping often comes at the expense of spending time with patients. Administrative correctness threatens actual patient care, which is not right.
|
|
Dr. Stanley Idiculla |
In order to establish and maintain electronic patient records, as required by the ACA starting in October 2015, medical practices have to revamp their record-keeping to accommodate a new approach to diagnosis coding. The ICD-10 coding will include a total of 65,000 codes, tens of thousand more than existed before the ACA was enacted. He and other physicians have to spend 60-70 thousand dollars for the software to set up electronic medical records (EMR) to work and document the codes properly. The result is that 60-70% of Dr. Idiculla’s costs are overhead – administrative costs – rather than the actual costs of seeing patients and providing care.

NBA Star's Injury May Take Longer to Heal Than Anticipated: IL Podiatrist
Is the recovery prognosis for Kevin Durant a little too rosy? It is according to the team podiatrist for the Chicago White Sox. Dr. Lowell Scott Weil, Sr. said the NBA's reigning Most Valuable Player could be sidelined closer to 10 to 12 weeks while recovering from Jones fracture surgery. The Thunder said Durant will be re-evaluated in six weeks after undergoing surgery Thursday.
|
|
Dr. Lowell Weil, Sr. |
“Because the fracture forms over time, and Durant is unsure of when it occurred specifically, there's really no telling how severe it is and how long it will take to heal,” said Weil, president of the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute. “There's a good chance he has been playing on a fractured foot for a few weeks, which could significantly lengthen his recovery.” The worst thing Durant could do, Weil said, is return too soon. “I've seen this before with professional athletes,” he said. “There's a lot of pressure from the media, the fans, and even the coaches. If he starts playing again before he's fully healed, he could risk being out the whole season. It's just not worth it.”

PPMA Podiatrists Part of $200M Health Fund Settlement
Healthcare providers will be getting $200 million from the state of Pennsylvania in a settlement announced Thursday over litigation about a massive fund set up to help doctors pay malpractice insurance premiums. The Corbett administration said the state would pay $139 million in refunds, starting in a year and-a-half, and to cut what providers must pay into the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error fund by $61 million through a revised formula.
Groups that represent doctors and hospitals sued in 2009 after the state transferred $100 million from the Mcare Fund, as it is known, to the state's general fund to help balance the budget under then-Gov. Ed Rendell. The other parties were the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association.

VA Podiatry Group Agrees to Settlement in ADA Case
Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, announced yesterday a settlement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with Associated Foot & Ankle Centers of Northern Virginia, P.C. (AFAC), to ensure that it provides appropriate auxiliary aids and services to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing when providing medical services. The complainant specifically alleged that AFAC failed to provide a sign language interpreter for multiple medical appointments and provided an individual who is not a qualified interpreter during other appointments.
The settlement agreement requires AFAC to pay $14,000 to the aggrieved individual and a $1,000 civil penalty to the United States; provide training to the podiatry practice's staff on the requirements of the ADA; and adopt specific policies and procedures to ensure that auxiliary aids and services are provided promptly to patients and companions who are deaf or hard of hearing.

| SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS | |
Bret Ribotsky: When selling a podiatry practice, I hear that many are accepting a value of 0.5 times last year's gross income. What are your thoughts on this?
|
|
Dr. Jack Morgan |
Jack Morgan: Why would a doctor who is grossing a million dollars a year with a 50% overhead accept a payment of this? If someone was going to buy into an income of 500K, then next year, this should be worth much more than one year's gross. For many doctors who are considering selling, if the price being offered is less, it would make sense just to work for 4-6 months more and capture all the income those wishing to purchase the practice for are paying. Doctors need to learn the true value of their business and stop accepting less than it's worth.
