AT THE COLLEGES |
WesternU Students Lend Their Expertise at Care Harbor LA
Hundreds of Western University of Health Sciences students and faculty volunteered at Care Harbor LA, one of the largest free health clinics in the country. Los Angeles resident Maria Brown said she has worked at Care Harbor LA as a security guard, but this is the first time she attended as a patient. She stopped to get an exam from WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine students. “They were nice to me,” she said. “They examined my foot well.”

“It’s good to help out. There is a huge population that needs our help,” said third-year College of Podiatric Medicine student Michele Chan. “It’s great to offer our assistance even as students. We get to learn a lot from these events, honestly.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
NJ Podiatrist Loves Tattoos, But Might Have Some Regrets
Despite mainstream acceptance, some workplaces still frown on tattoos (especially those on the face) or gauged ears, and the person is faced with being shut out of pursuing the job they want. Sometimes, other factors may create regrets. “I have four tattoos and I love them all,” said Heather Crawford Duym, DPM, a Bass River podiatrist and mother of two in her late forties, who at press time got her most recent one, a colorful world map with the phrase, "Die With Memories, Not Dreams.”

“My first one was of a bundle of grapes that I had gotten with my friend, and she had a matching one. But I regret it now because we are no longer friends. Still, I would like to have it re-done to reflect that, not removed completely,” said Dr. Duym.

Myth: High heels Wreck Your Feet - CA Podiatrist
Your mother lied to you: Carrots will not improve your eyesight. We’re setting the record straight about the health myths you’ve heard your whole life.
|
Dr. Joan Oloff |
“Wearing high heels constantly can shorten your Achilles tendon, causing pain and injury. But just because a shoe is flat does not mean it will not irritate your feet. And no shoe can prevent or cause bunions, as they are mainly hereditary. It’s best to vary your heel heights and shoe type throughout the week. And if they hurt, take them off!” —Joan Oloff, DPM, a podiatrist and shoe designer.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Front Office Billing Tips - Part 1
If you want your billing and collections to be as smooth and effective as possible, you need to make sure everybody on your team is doing their part.
1. Begin the collections process even before the patient enters the door. Have staff verify insurance, confirm their co-pay, and review whether they have an unmet deductible. Also check to see if patients have an outstanding balance. For patients who have a balance but cannot pay in full, this is a good time to refer them to your back office staff who can ideally explain pre-established payment plans. Make sure staff communicate to patients that they are expected to pay in full or for an agreed upon payment amount on the day of the visit.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL ) - PART 1A |
RE: Requests to Trim Fingernails
From: Dan Klein, DPM
The discussion of whether a podiatrist is qualified and licensed to trim fingernails touches on the subject “holistic medical care”, physicians vs. podiatrists and the disparity in training and licensure. Until podiatrists obtain dual licensing or are considered having the same training as MDs and DOs, there will always be a separation and recognition of abilities and licensure. Are MDs or DOs questioned about trimming fingernails or toenails? It’s absurd to think that a podiatrist is not trained to trim a fingernail but everyone refers to licensure and scope of practice.
Podiatry schools, to have a viable future and put to rest qualifications and limited licensure, must include similar or the same curricula and residency training as MDs and DOs. Podiatry students must take the same or similar exams for licensure as MDs and DOs.
When will the podiatry profession recognize this need? It’s not by chance that many podiatrists obtained an MD or DO license! It’s all about recognition by our peers and the public and those in power and the insurance industry. Congress must come to the realization that podiatrists are to be recognized as physicians, not “allied healthcare” providers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1B |
RE: Requests to Trim Fingernails
From: Bryce Karulak, DPM, Charles Morelli, DPM
I truly think we are hyper-focusing with respect to trimming patients' fingernails. I am willing to bet that if anyone of us cut a patient's fingernails and went to the majority of the PCPs in our respective areas, they would not care and even say, "Great!"
Where this conversation should really focus on is enhancing our scope. I work in Texas and the law for podiatry basically reads, "A podiatrist may treat...
Editor's Note: Dr. Karulak's extended-length letter can be read here.
My question is very simple and I look forward to hearing from our legal scholars. Why is it that anyone can trim a fingernail but a podiatrist cannot? Why was my wife able to trim our daughter's nails? Why is a granddaughter not placed in peril if she cuts the nails of her grandmother in a nursing home? These examples are endless. Why might this not be covered under the Good Samaritan law which "provides basic legal protection for those who assist a person who is injured or in danger." I once had to pry open the hand of a patient in severe contracture, only to find a nail that was on the verge of puncturing his palm. Does that qualify him as being in "danger"? I submit to you that it does.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1C |
RE: Requests to Trim Fingernails
From: Brian Kiel, DPM, John Fricker, DPM
One of the responders asked why as podiatrists we cannot trim fingernails. 60 years ago, we were chiropodists and treated the hand and foot (chiro-hand, pod-foot). We fought to change the name to podiatrist and now we are struggling to change the degree to MD. Going back to treating fingernails seems quite illogical.
Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN
I once had a patient who requested that I cut his fingernails. I replied that due to my scope of practice in Kentucky, everything I work on has to be below the knee. As he sat in the treatment chair, he thought for a second and then extended his hand down to his ankle and said, "How about now?" We had a great laugh together. Clever guy.
John Fricker, DPM, Frankfort, KY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
From: Randy K. Kaplan, DPM
It's a very sad day for the profession, MPMA, and the Civic/Grand/Kern community. Dr. Bass epitomized the same dedication and passion to podiatric resident education and the profession as did his own mentors, Drs. Earl G. Kaplan and Irvin O. Kanat. Dr. Bass was an incredible mentor, teaching not just podiatric medicine and surgery but real life lessons and the importance of our profession's history. He taught residents to give back to the profession to make it better for those who follow. In short, he made a difference. He was a Civic-Kern boy, heart and soul. Gone too soon, but not forgotten!
Randy K. Kaplan, DPM, Clinton Township MI
