TUSPM Students Participate in Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk
Students from the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine participated in the Susan G Komen Three-Day Walk for Breast Cancer on Friday and Saturday night October 14 and 15. Student doctors under the direction of Howard J Palamarchuk, DPM provided podiatric care for the walkers each night after finishing 20 miles a day for the 60-mile walk.

Many of the walkers credit podiatric care with the reason that they are able to finish this grueling three-day walk. 2016 marked the 12th consecutive year that TUSPM has participated in this great event.

Improperly Laced Shoes Can Cause Injuries: MD Podiatrist
According to podiatrist Dr. Adam Spector, of Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic in Wheaton and Rockville, if you don’t lace your shoes appropriately, your performance may suffer and you may have a less-than-pleasant experience. Spector is co-founder of the Montgomery County Road Runners Club’s Stride Clinic to evaluate runners. He was a national-level swimmer on scholarship at George Washington University and ran for cross-training. Now, running is the centerpiece of Spector’s daily exercise regimen.
|
|
Dr. Adam Spector |
Runners can suffer minor and major injuries if they do not lace their shoes optimally, Spector said. And that’s because correctly lacing your shoes can keep them perfect while you run. “Your foot and shoe need to become one,” Spector said. “The key is to make sure the shoe fits well and then to lace your shoes so that your foot stays stable.”

Soaking Feet in Tea is Effective Home Remedy for Bromhidrosis: NC Podiatrist
Stinky feet can be more than a nuisance. They can be a major source of embarrassment. Some people can’t seem to escape giving off that smell, hard as they try. One expert, Jane E. Andersen, a doctor of podiatric medicine and spokeswoman for the American Podiatric Medical Association, sniffs out the causes of foot odor and how to keep the funk at bay. If you suffer from malodorous extremities, “you could have more bacteria on the skin than others, or more sweat than others, or a combination of the two,” says Dr. Andersen, who has a private practice in Chapel Hill, NC.
|
|
Dr. Jane Andersen |
Dr. Andersen turns directly to the feet themselves to control sweating. She will sometimes prescribe antiperspirants for the feet, or recommend over-the-counter clinical-strength formulations. “But I live in an area where people like holistic approaches, so I typically recommend a tea solution for sweaty feet,” she says. That requires soaking bad-smelling feet in strong, cooled, brewed black tea for 30 minutes every day for seven to 10 days, and then once a week for maintenance. “The tannic acids dry out the sweat glands,” she says.

6 Ways to End a Doctor-Patient Relationship - Part 7
As doctors, we have all treated patients who were very difficult to deal with, due to their non-compliance, an abusive attitude, or just a mismatch of personalities. For most of us, there is no need to stay in a relationship that is clearly not serving the patient nor the doctor well. What is the best way to terminate a doctor-patient relationship?
We practice medicine in the real world where all kinds of personalities exist. Sometimes, personalities just clash, whether it is the doctor's or patient's fault. Or it can be something more sinister, like a relationship becoming abusive. Either way, we should not be forced to practice medicine under the gun in a suboptimal relationship as such. It wears down our efforts and leads to burnout, and we end up providing improper care to patients. Both patients and doctors benefit when these broken relationships are ended. However, it must be done in a suitable way and patients should never suffer because of it.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS) | |
From: Robert D. Phillips, DPM
I am a little bit disturbed by the answer by Dr. Vogler as printed in PM News, in response to Dr. Ribotsky's question, "How are you applying podiatric biomechanics to advanced surgical procedures such as ankle fusions?" Unfortunately, Dr. Vogler did not really address any of the changes in the biomechanics of the lower extremity when one does an ankle fusion, and instead made a very generalized statement about ankle fusion changing the biomechanics of the lower extremity, referred to nondescript changes in orthotic technology, and finally recommended that an orthotist be consulted.
If this is the best answer that such a renowned surgeon as Dr. Vogler can give, it is indeed a sad commentary on the low state of knowledge of kinesiology, kinematics, and kinetics of the lower extremity that is sweeping our profession. It is very important that podiatrists not only fully understand how...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) | |
From: Michael G. Warshaw, DPM, CPC
After reading the response by Dr. Poggio to this query, I must disagree. For the appropriate way to bill a hospital visit on a Medicare patient, it would not be appropriate to use the initial hospital care coding, E/M services. One need look no further than the CPT Manual. Under Initial Hospital Care, New or Established Patient: "The following codes are used to report the first hospital inpatient encounter with the patient by the admitting physician. For initial inpatient encounters by physicians other than the admitting physician, see initial inpatient consultation codes (99251-99255) or subsequent hospital care codes (99231-99233) as appropriate."
There was no indication in the query that the physician in question was the admitting physician and based upon the fact that the initial inpatient consultation codes do not apply, it is clear that the most appropriate E/M codes to use for the scenario described in the query are the subsequent hospital care codes.
