Avoid Wearing Dark Socks: CA Podiatrist
Certain types of shoes are known to be bad for your feet, such as high heels and flip-flops. But when it comes to foot health, there’s something else that often gets overlooked: the type of socks you wear. Socks can “provide protection for our feet... and help with moisture control, temperature control, comfort” and support, said Chandler Hubbard, DPM, assistant professor at Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine.
|
|
Dr. Chandler Hubbard |
Avoid dark or black socks. When you’re wearing dark or black socks, the dye can rub off on your skin and nails, Dr. Hubbard said. “[This] can cause unnecessary concern because... it can mimic the appearance of a bruise or a skin lesion,” she explained. “It can also cause irritation and potentially a contact dermatitis or allergic reaction.” If you’re going to buy dark socks, Hubbard recommends washing them before you wear them to lessen the chance of dye staining the skin and nails.

Dr. Shemwell began his career in healthcare as a podiatrist after graduating from the College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, IL. Once his education was complete, he began as an associate working alongside Dr. Stanley Rowe in Independence, MO, treating the renowned Harry S. Truman and his wife, Bess Truman, in 1958 before opening his first clinic, located on Spring Street in Excelsior Springs as a part of the McCleary hospital.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Considering a Practice Change? Five Signs it May Not Be a Fit
Here are a few red flags to signal a new career opportunity might not be the right move.
4. Unexplained stagnation
Whether because of faculty loss, delay in implementing new initiatives, failure to make difficult decisions, awaiting a plan for interim leadership, etc., many practices stagnate without the ability for timely decision-making and missional prioritization. If you assume a role and are left waiting in the wings while key decisions are being made, it will greatly impact your chances for meaningful impact and success. A healthy practice will be able to communicate the reasons for historic challenges effectively and give you an idea of what’s to come. It might be time to move on to other role considerations if there are significant present roadblocks to innovation with appropriate explanation.

Query: Replacement Product for Gordon's Number 5 Spray Foot Powder
I am sorry to hear about Gordon Labs' pending closure. We have been using and selling Gordon's Number 5 spray foot powder for decades. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement product?

For the past 16 years, I have had the immense pleasure of knowing SuEllen and David Dercher. Our conversations at podiatric conventions have always been a highlight for me, filled with stimulating discussions on topics ranging from the FDA to parenting. I appreciate every moment spent with them. SuEllen and David embody integrity, hard work, experience, and knowledge, all delivered with a wonderful sense of humor and humility. They truly are a class act.
As they embark on this new chapter, I will miss our conversations greatly. I hope David finds time to enjoy fishing, and I wish SuEllen all the joy of being a grandmother. May their retirement be filled with health and happiness beyond their wildest dreams.

From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM
I have 42+ years of practice experience doing phenol matrixectomies. This is probably the most common in-office surgical procedure that I do. I have done 1000s+ of these. The complication and recurrence rate is low, exactly how low I cannot say, but it remains an excellent procedure done for the prevention of recurring painful or infected ingrowing toenails and a procedure that our profession does well, thus providing great benefits to our patients to help them to enjoy the activities of daily living without painful ingrown toenails.
There are many procedures available to eliminate the toenail matrix including phenol, curettage, sharp frost, Winograd, plastic lip, CO2 laser, and yes also radio wave ablation. Each has its own set of risks, and potential complications including regrowth. In his post, Dr. McLean states, “The upshot is faster healing (also resulting in reduced bandaging time). Even better, the rate of recurrence is much lower, meaning the edge treated regrows less often."
Show me the proof of what you have written about the benefits of radio wave technique for toenail matrixectomy. Is this your own practice experience, or do you have journal articles or comparative studies you can provide? These are the same identical claims that were made by some podiatrists all across the country with the introduction of the CO2 lasers from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, and most would agree that they were merely advertising gimmicks to attract new patients?
Keith L. Gurnick, DPM, Los Angeles, CA

From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
I’ve been a Costco member for years and admired their optometry and hearing aid departments for years. When my local Costco opened about 7 years ago, I had a long conversation with their Northern Hemisphere chief of operations of their optometry department. He provided me with a significant amount of information on how cost-effective they were and the scope of operation. I was amazed that he was so free to divulge this amount of information.
What I’ve learned as an observer and consumer is that Costco is very ethical, cost-effective, and stand behind their products and services, and is very sensitive to consumer sentiment. That being said, the issue here with all orthotics for them may be within each state‘s regulations for providing foot orthotics. There are many states which have no licensure requirements regarding who...
