AT THE COLLEGES
NY Podiatrist's Happy Patient Helps Sponsor NYCPM Seminar

Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous patient greatly helped by Joseph D’Amico, DPM, NYCPM Professor and past Chair of Department of Orthopedics and Biomechanics at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, the college is once again sponsoring the Richard O. Schuster Memorial Biomechanics Seminar on November 11, 2017.

Drs. Joseph D'Amico and Richard Schuster

Dr. D’Amico’s patient was so happy with the pain-relieving therapy he received that he makes an annual donation to help train others in the field of biomechanics. The commercial sponsor-free Schuster seminar focuses on tried and true biomechanical principles.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Ibuprofen as Effective as Morphine in Children Post Minor Surgery

A randomized superiority trial evaluated 154 participants (oral morphine, 77; oral ibuprofen, 77) with post-operative orthopedic pain from June 2013 to September 2016. Patients received either oral morphine or oral ibuprofen every 6 hours after discharge; and pain scores at discharge were measured using Faces Pain Scale - Revised. No significant difference in pain scores were seen between the 2 drugs during the first dose (P=.2) and over time (P=.4).

Take-away: Home administration of oral ibuprofen (eg. Advil) was as effective as oral morphine (e.g. Morphabond) in pediatric patients following minor surgery, with fewer adverse effects.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Consider When Retiring from Practice

6. Look beyond the "hard stop."

If you can afford to ease out, look at the options to practice part-time. A New Orleans physician had an interesting strategy: "I started out taking afternoons off, four days a week," he explained. "And then I took Fridays off. Next, I went to three days. I figured that if I couldn't keep myself busy and from going nuts with that much free time, stopping practice altogether wouldn't work." Part-time hospital employment has also been a good transition for some senior physicians.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Richard G. Macdonald, DPM

After serving a year as an enlisted man at Walter Reed Hospital, I became the 18th commissioned podiatrist (as a 2nd Lieutenant). I agree with W. David Herbert, DPM. A military podiatrist is now serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. I suggest Col. Michael Thomas Neary, DPM as a reference for any article on podiatrists in the military. Col. Neary is the podiatry consultant to the Army Surgeon General and is very active in the APMA Military group.

Dr. Richard Macdonald Being Commissioned

I served as the podiatrist at West Point over 50 years ago. I went back in 2015 on my 50 year anniversary. Col Neary escorted me for 2 days at the Point per the direction of the Superintendent of U.S. Military Academy. The attached picture with the Maj. General, the commanding officer of Walter Reed Army Hospital, also contains the first podiatrist commissioned by the Army (standing next to my wife).
