APMA, Partners Successfully Lobby For PCD LCD Delay
This morning, DME Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) published a notice stating that all four jurisdictions would be delaying implementation of recently finalized local coverage determinations (LCDs) for pneumatic compression devices (PCDs). The scheduled effective date was November 1. DME MACs have not published a future effective date. These LCDs would have prevented podiatric physicians from prescribing PCDs regardless of the scope of practice in their respective states. The current LCD and related policy article will remain in effect.
APMA is currently contacting congressional staff and seeking inquiry for additional information from the HHS secretary about this LCD and the role of state determination of scope of practice. APMA is considering all alternatives to contest these LCDs because of the precedential impact they may have.

Diabetic Limb Salvage Clinicians Meet in DC
Diabetic limb salvage clinicians from around the United States and from more than 20 foreign countries met October 9-11, 2014, in Washington, DC, for the eighth annual MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Diabetic Limb Salvage Conference. Close to 900 physicians, surgeons and other diabetic limb salvage specialists attended the conference, one of the largest meetings of its type in the world.
|
|
Dr. John Steinberg |
John S. Steinberg, DPM, conference co-chairman and co-director of the Center for Wound Healing Center at Georgetown said, “The main theme for DLS this year was: Positively influencing cost and outcomes in limb salvage treatment. We specifically chose topics and speakers to ensure that attendees walked away with information that they can put into effect as soon as they return to their practice.”

VA Podiatrist's License Suspended
A podiatrist who was arrested earlier this year on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, possessing cocaine and refusing to submit to a breath or blood test has had his license suspended by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The medical license of Dr. David J. Cho, who practices at Cho Foot & Ankle Specialists, was suspended after an informal conference by the board, pending a formal hearing that has not yet been scheduled.

Feds Spend $2.1 Million to Develop Weight-Tracking Insoles
The federal government is spending more than two million dollars to develop wearable insoles and buttons that can track a person’s weight in order to fight obesity. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded grants for two projects that will monitor “lifestyle behavior” through technologies that will encourage people to exercise more.
“A single device that accurately monitors body weight, posture allocation, physical activity (i.e. movement), and energy expenditure would be an extremely useful tool for weight management,” the grant’s abstract states. The insoles work with a mobile phone app that shows the user their weight and physical activity levels.

Query: Stage 2 Meaningful Use Hardship Extension
After looking at the requirements for the hardship extension, I am thinking of submitting for an extension. This is based on the fact that my EHR company received their certification for Stage 2 around May 1st. With reprogramming and training myself and staff along with computer reconfiguration, establishing a patient portal, etc., and trying to qualify for the 90-day period, we won't make it. I would have no problem meeting Stage 1 again. Any feedback on this idea?
Don Ambroziak, DPM, Lexington, KY
Response: Providers that were due for Stage 2 in 2014 can instead attest using Stage 1 criteria if they attest to the inability to fully implement 2014 Edition certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) due to delays in 2014 Edition CEHRT availability. This includes staff training. It sounds like your situation applies. It's not a bad idea to check with your vendor to see if they will be willing to provide you with proof of their delayed Stage 2 certification.

RE: The Passing of Jeffrey Bowman, DPM
It is with a great deal of sadness that the AAPPM shares the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Jeffrey Bowman, DPM, MS.
Dr. Bowman was a longtime leader and served the podiatric profession with much distinction. He was a past president of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association, served on a number of committees for the APMA, and was a leader within the AAPPM and served as the AAPPM Membership Committee Chairman. In recognition of his dedication, service and leadership to the AAPPM, he was awarded the AAPPM President's Award.

I am not sure whether there is an issue performing neurectomies in adjacent webspaces, but what I am sure of is that if this surgeon did decompressions in this case, it wouldn't have gone to court.
