Radio Waves May Solve Many Ingrown Nail Issues: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Over 80 years ago, the use of a powerful acid was applied to the nail root as a way to alter irrevocably the width of the nail plate. Indeed, it was a success and went on to become the optimal method of treating a recurrent ingrown nail condition. But technology has progressed and new options have become available."
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
Some say a better option is the use of high intensity radio waves, the process being termed radiofrequency coblation. One of the advantages of this technology is the absence of burned tissue, such as occurs when an acid is applied. The upshot is faster healing (also resulting in reduced bandaging time). Even better, the rate of recurrence is much lower, meaning the edge treated regrows less often," says Dr. McLean.

PA Podiatrists Could Approve Cannabis Under Proposals
Podiatrists would be able to approve patients for a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania under proposals awaiting action from the State’s health secretary. Currently, only licensed medical doctors or doctors of osteopathic medicine can certify patients for Pennsylvania’s medical cannabis program, which has hundreds of thousands of active patients.
If approved, the change could expand access to the program, a shift that supporters say would give patients more options. The executive director of a cannabis group told Spotlight PA the move could even help lower the price of obtaining a card. But at least one state official has said telehealth already makes the program widely accessible.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Considering a Practice Change? Five Signs it May Not Be a Fit
Here are a few red flags to signal a new career opportunity might not be the right move.
3. Lack of commitment to diversity
There’s no excuse for practices to ignore the advancement and importance of diversity in their hiring processes. Initiating an inclusive search requires deliberative effort and understanding to remove and reduce the impact of implicit bias and provide standardization to the process. Several strategies have been successfully employed in academic medicine towards this goal. They include the use of equity advocates and creating high-performing teams through mandatory training and standardized evaluation tools and scoring systems. It speaks to the strength of the culture of the organization and will have an impact on your future success in building diverse teams that represent the patients that you serve.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
RE: Gordon Laboratories -The End of an Institution
From: Arnold Signer, DPM
In reading PM News, I saw the notification that, after 60 years, Gordon Laboratories is being closed down by its owners SuEllen Derscher and her husband David. Reading their message, I was both saddened and happy. It has been a rarity to attend a podiatry meeting and not see Gordon Laboratories in a prime location in the exhibit hall. Having been involved in meeting planning in Florida, I learned early on which companies knew how to attract doctors to their booths and those companies that had no idea how to do so. SuEllen has been one of the finest marketers of her company. Even if you were not her customer, you could always stop at the Gordon Laboratories booth to trade the latest jokes with her.
It has been a privilege to know SuEllen and David for these many years and I wish them all the best wishes on their retirement.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE) | |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
With regard to the denial of services by MCR Part C providers, there is a practical aspect which cannot be denied. Dr. Kesselman notes that in theory, by the "letter of the law", Medicare Advantage plans are obligated to provide services normally provided to a patient as defined by the local LCD or national directive. However, many in private practice rely on referrals from physicians and physician-extenders for practice survival.
Increased podiatric costs are considered a loss of profit to the referring healthcare provider. The referring Medicare advantage plan healthcare providers monitor payments to providers to whom they refer. Sadly, unethical referring healthcare providers will remove or discontinue referrals to those whom they perceive to be...

From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM
I was equally surprised, a few weeks ago, when I went in person to shop at a local Costco near Los Angeles and came across a non-doctor vendor on premises making on-site custom 3D printed orthotics for Costco shoppers. I stood by and watched him do his thing. They even had a display sign stating the customer could use an FSA or HSA card for payment.
