NY Podiatrist Cautions Against Forcing Ballet Turnout

Dr. John Brummer, a podiatric surgeon and a consultant at the School at Steps in New York City, says that forcing ballet turnout can irritate and inflame the ligaments around the ankle joint. "When you push your ankle bones against those ligaments, you put undue pressure on them, causing a strain injury," he says. Icing your ankles after class, as well as taking anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, can ease your symptoms.

Dr. John Brummer

If you continue to torque your feet, you could weaken the ligaments further, making you more susceptible to ankle sprains, says Brummer. Ask your teacher for help correcting and monitoring your alignment. Before combinations, be very careful not to take a "bottom-up" approach by planting your feet into 180 degrees (and then wriggling the rest of your body into place). Instead, try to work with your natural turnout, using your hip muscles to safely hold it.

They collected over $4,000 for that worthy cause.

Children's Feet Need to be Measured Often: Aussie Podiatrist

Kids are encouraged to run, climb, skip, jump, and hop around on their feet, but they’re often doing it without the right kind of shoes. Cairns podiatrist Chris Murray told Well and Good the secret to having kids with happy feet is by picking shoes with the right support. “It’s very important with growing feet to have them measured,” he said.

Chris Murray  (photo: Anna Rogers)

“Every child is a little different, it depends on how quickly the feet grow and growth spurts, but I recommend getting feet measured about every six to 12 months.” He said the measurements could be used for a variety of foot fixes. “It can be used for sizing, for fit, and also to check the shoe’s function and to make sure shoes fit the type of foot that children have,” he said.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
PA Podiatrist Accused of Writing Fake Prescriptions

A doctor in Columbia County is facing charges for giving fake prescriptions to patients. Police say Dr. Jody Kubicki of Berwick gave some patients prescriptions for drugs, without examining them first. According to investigators with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office, the podiatrist prescribed Adderall and Oxycontin for some patients and did not keep records of those prescriptions over the past two years.

MEDICAL ECONOMICS
Podiatrists Rank #11 in Healthcare Salaries

Few industries are expected to grow as fast as the healthcare sector over the next 10 years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that employment in all healthcare occupations will grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, adding about 2.3 million new jobs. Moreover, at $62,610, the median annual wage for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations was well over the median wage for all U.S. occupations in 2015. Within the industry, though, there is wide disparity in how much different jobs pay.

With that in mind, research site CareerTrends used data from the BLS to find the jobs in the healthcare industry with the highest average annual salary in 2015. In general, specialized medical fields like anesthesiology #1 ($219,810), podiatry #11 ($133,650) and optometry #16 ($112,530) offer high-paying career tracks.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Executive Order Seeks to Weaken ACA Insurance Rules and End Cost-Sharing

Frustrated by the failure of GOP efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday to ease ACA rules and give individuals and businesses access to cheaper health plans with fewer benefits and consumer protections. (Trump on Friday announced he would end cost-sharing subsidies to insurers.) The subsidies, which this year cost the federal government $7 billion, help low-income people pay for insurance coverage.

The order easing the ACA rules will have to be implemented through the time-consuming federal rule-making process, making it unlikely the changes will take effect in time for the 2018 plan year. And experts said it's likely to face legal challenges that could create further delays. The White House said the goal was to offer more affordable coverage to people if they band together through business and occupational associations to get plans. It could go a long way toward achieving the Republican goal of gutting ACA market rules and allowing consumers to buy stripped-down coverage in a less-regulated market.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Consider When Retiring from Practice

4. How will you spend your time in retirement? (Con't)

What will your routine look like? After the initial travel is completed and the long postponed fun is over, then what? And, what about year three? What will fill the void of patient gratitude and being good at what you do? You may need to start cultivating new hobbies or jumpstart ones you left behind in residency.

One of the physicians I interviewed pointed out that there is no reason for physicians to be bored. "There are plenty of medically related charitable organizations that can use your help, and residents' clinics. Plus all sorts of meaningful volunteer and online educational opportunities." The key is to think of a plan for retirement before you see the last patient.
