MEETING NEWS |
Hard to Heal Wound Symposium Held
The Hard to Heal Wounds Seminar was held in Charleston, South Carolina last weekend. Attendees included podiatrists, dermatologists, general surgeons, researchers, and wound care practitioners. Caroline File, MD spoke on “Wounds with No Name”. They often do not meet inclusion criteria for randomized controlled trials because of co-morbidities. Many times wounds are not simply “silo” cases of DFUs, VLUs, or pressure ulcers but crossovers of all three.
|
Attendees at Hard to Heal Wound Symposium |
Scarlet Milo, PhD spoke on the challenges of biofilm. Often ionic silver, known for its own anti- microbial activity, is unable to penetrate the biofilm. Bec, a surfactant, as well as chelators like EDTA are often necessary to allow ionic silver to penetrate the biofilm. Andrew Rader, DPM reviewed macrophage activity in wounds. The goal with extracellular matrix (ECM) products is to shorten the M1 macrophage stage which can create inflammation, whereas M2 macrophages produce tissue repair and remodeling.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
11 Ways to Market Your Practice
Whether you're launching a new clinic, recovering lost volume, or simply trying to stay top-of-mind in your community, these 11 marketing strategies can help.
8. Offer online scheduling
Convenience is a huge driver of patient choice. Promoting online booking across your website and social profiles not only improves access—it boosts conversion. As Physicians Practice notes, patient-facing technology often overlaps with marketing goals

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY |
6 Steps to Protect Your Retirement Savings
Eager to protect your savings from the dangers that seem to be lurking everywhere lately? Financial advisers say that these are your best moves now.
4. Don't let fear drive your decisions
Exacerbating the recent stress about the economy is growing anxiety about Social Security. Some 58% of respondents in the Alliance for Lifetime Income survey expressed concern that Social Security benefits will eventually be reduced. As a result, 34% of pre-retirees are considering claiming earlier than planned.
Evidence suggests that's already happening. Initial claims are up 13% so far this year, to nearly 3 million — more than triple the usual rate of increase. A recent Urban Institute analysis also found that the Social Security Administration has received more early claims in 2025 from higher earners, especially at age 62, than in previous years, concluding that recent staff cuts and policy changes contributed to the numbers by causing fear and confusion among future recipients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODI;ATRY) |
From: Bob Smith, DPM
I do appreciate the student data centered on enrollment and graduation rates recently made available in PM News. I have read this central theme presented throughout the year from assertions and responses. This dialog has peaked my curiosity. I do agree that new residency programs should be approved by ACGME because, in my opinion and research, the subject of pain management and substance use disorder can be taught uniformly across all healthcare disciplines.
Furthermore, I am interested in the numbers of graduation rates and reasons for not completing the college’s programs, and speculate that perhaps students transferred to other podiatry colleges. Moreover, the cost and student loan burden has always puzzled me among healthcare professionals. I believe the need is so dire for all healthcare professionals, especially podiatrists, in preventing lower extremity amputations, falls, and lower extremity pain associated with chronic disease that communities, states, and federal governments should subsidize medical education to fill the obvious chasm. Perhaps the colleges can provide tuition costs and student loan data for each of their classes, and we as a profession may offer solutions to mitigate this burden.
Bob Smith, DPM, Ormond Beach, FL
