PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 |
Feet are the Body's Foundation: NY Podiatrist
Your feet are the foundation of our entire body but the majority of us hardly give them a second thought aside from squeezing them into our joggers. For Dr. Emily Splichal – podiatrist, movement specialist, author, and global leader in barefoot science and rehabilitation – clueing people up on the importance of our extremities is a personal mission.
|
Dr. Emily Splichal |
“As the only contact point between the body and the ground, our feet are not only our body's foundation (base) but also our brain's gateway into the perception of the ground we walk on,” Emily says. “Any imbalance in our foundation (feet) will impact our body's alignment proximally. Similarly, any disconnect between the feet, brain, and ground can result in delayed stability when we move and increase our risk of overuse injuries.”

MI Podiatrist Discusses Heel Pain
Podiatrists of the Michigan Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) say that although heel pain may be caused by gait abnormalities, an injury from walking, running, or jumping on hard surfaces or from wearing poorly constructed shoes can also cause heel problems.
|
Dr. Jodie Sengstock |
“A sore heel will usually get better on its own without surgery if given enough rest,” said Dr. Jodie Sengstock, MPMA's director of professional relations. “However, many people ignore the early signs of heel pain and keep on doing the activities that caused it. When a person continues to walk on a sore heel, it will only get worse and could become a chronic condition leading to more problems.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Negotiating Your Contracts: Hidden Pitfalls and Traps - Part 3
Negotiating and reviewing contracts are among the more unnerving tasks physicians face. That’s good! Your subconscious is sending you “danger” signals. You simply need to channel this emotion into action to protect yourself.
3. Do not be swayed by promises of cost savings. For every business need, there is a solution that is cheaper, quicker, and has disaster written all over it. Large, well-capitalized companies often offer the best services or products but cost more than smaller competitors and are less likely to negotiate contracts. This leaves plenty of room for startups of all stripes to attempt to undercut the industry leader. Smaller companies may negotiate but are more likely to present a “C” (only favorable to the seller) contract, because they are undercapitalized and can’t afford liability when things go wrong. So, they write liability out of the contract.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS MEDICAL:-LEGAL) |
From: Kenneth T. Goldstein, DPM, Michael Lawrence, DPM
This is very simple. New York State Law does not allow podiatrists to treat fingers. If you attempt to do this and something goes wrong, infection, etc., you are leaving yourself open for a lawsuit for practicing out of scope. I do not believe any malpractice carrier would cover this.
Kenneth T. Goldstein, DPM, Williamsville, NY
I applaud all colleagues who have rendered such care under the stated circumstances. I'm "guilty". I did so as well. And you know what? I felt real good about going beyond to help someone in need with such a simple application of my God-given skills, given freely with heart -warming gratitude the only compensation.
As far as being subject to board discipline? Any board that would do such would be, in my opinion, just plain shameful.
Michael Lawrence, DPM, Chattanooga, TN

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Joel Morse, DPM, Kristin Happel
For biopsy of the nail unit, one usually needs to take the matrix via a punch or a tangential. The diagnosis could only be melanonychia L60.8 or melanocytic nevi D22.7x
It appears that the doctor is using B35.1, which is never the diagnosis for a CPT 11755. In my view, a nail culture is part of the E&M and not a separate procedure .
Joel Morse DPM, Washington, DC
Humana has become quite specific about modifiers, and in this case with the 11755, they are probably looking for a T modifier (TA-T9) to indicate which toe the nail biopsy was done on, as RT and LT is not specific enough. As Dr. Kesselman said, though, caution is needed, as this code is definitely under scrutiny by payers for being billed when it is not actually being performed according to the code description.
Kristin Happel, Crystal Lake, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
I read with such sadness of Dr. Bass’ passing. He trained two generations of men and women at Civic/Grand/Kern who are now podiatric surgeons. These two generations are training their share of men and women who are, I’m sure, regaling their trainees with stories of the innate goodness, class, and grace of this man and mentor. RIP, Dr. B.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP |
At $17M, the World’s Most Expensive Shoes
The high-end shoe market is no stranger to expensive, luxurious kicks. For those conspicuous consumers with the pockets deep enough to satisfy any whim, come the most expensive shoes on the market. The set can be your last word in hoof-wear for $17 million.
|
What to buy with your lottery jackpot winnings? |
Yes indeed, that is real gold on them thar heels, and each is accented with a 15-carat diamond as a culmination. 235 additional diamonds are used to add an exterior line to the shoe, adding just the right amount of ostentatious sparkle.
