TX Podiatrist is Emcee for NAACP Beautillion
Chivalry is said to be a thing of the past in today’s society, but at this year’s Beautillion presented by the Harrison County-Marshall, Texas Branch of the NAACP, the 14 participants proved that it’s very much alive and appreciated. The emcee, Dr. Selwynn Willis, a podiatrist in Longview, was an example to participants that they, too, can follow their dreams when they surround themselves in positive things.

“I think they would see from the past beaus, from people who are in leadership positions now, that this program is not a play thing,” said Willis.

Irish Golfing Great Credits Book by CA Podiatrist for Shaping His Thoughts
When Golfing great Padraig Harrington talks, winners listen, and many of Ireland's finest coaches — Declan Kidney (2009 Grand Slam), Brian Cody (2009 All-Ireland), Conor Counihan (2010 All-Ireland), Jim Gavin (2013 All-Ireland) — have profited from knocking on his door.

|
Dr. Thomas Amberry |
But to whom does Harrington turn? One of the books that shaped his thoughts was Free Throw — a book by Dr. Tom Amberry, a then 72-year-old basketball-loving podiatrist, who entered the Guinness Book of Records for sinking 2,750 shots in a row from the free throw line.

| SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS | |
Bret Ribotsky: If it's more lucrative to make orthotics than to do surgery, why are we losing this opportunity to pedorthists and chiropractors?
|
|
Dr. Kevin Kirby |
Kevin Kirby: I don’t think students have a choice. The residency model has them becoming surgeons. I think the death of biomechanics is requiring students to complete three years of training with minimal exposure to biomechanic training. Required today are 75 biomechanical exams; that is, two a month over the three years. So, when these students start practice, they forget what they had learned in podiatry school.

World Congress of Podiatry |
Meet the Masters will not be aired this week because of the World Congress of Podiatry. The next show, recorded at the World Congress of Podiatry in Rome will be aired on October 22. You can register for this event by clicking here

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Ensure Cooperation
People generally do what you expect them to do. So make requests and give instructions as if their cooperation is a sure thing.
Examples:“I know you’re someone I can count on.” “Thanks in advance for …” “Once you finish …” “When you have …” “I know you will want to …” “After you have …”

| QUERIES (CLINICAL) | |
Query: Excessive Hyperkeratosis with Erythema in Diabetic
A 51 year old male was referred to me with an incredible amount of painful hyperkeratotic build-up, with some fissures on the bottom of his feet with surrounding erythema. He stated that this began 11 months ago. At the time, he was diagnosed with diabetes, which he now controlled with Metformin. He also takes blood pressure and cholesterol meds. I trimmed off some of the keratotic skin with a sterile nail clipper and placed him in Silipos gel heel cups. Is there an exfoliant for him that my colleagues might recommend? What might be the cause of this condition? Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
From: Stephen Musser, DPM
From what I noticed from observing his upper extremity (lack of arm swing and position of his hand/wrist), there appears to be an underlying neurological element involved. Also, he appears to internally rotate on the left lower extremity. As others have duly noted, a neurology consult is indicated.

File/grind the implant material to below subchondral bone (if possible). Flush out (a lot) and reposition it as an end-to-end fusion. Consider using an MPC-type material to hold the toe in alignment. Keep us posted.

RE: HIPAA Craziness
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM
I have been reading the posts in PM News regarding cameras and HIPAA, charting and HIPAA, such and such and HIPAA, etc. Will we one day see common sense and HIPAA? I suppose that personal information could actually be used to injure our patients - like identity theft, but this HIPAA craze is far more than protecting our patients from Identity theft. It is just another way we allow our government to rule our lives.
We have let the camel stick its nose in another one of our tents and the next thing you know, before we realize how it happened, we will be sitting outside the tent looking in, and the camel will be in our tent all warm and snug. I don’t know about other physicians, but the people I treat don’t care about HIPAA! They think it is as crazy as I do. How does one get in trouble for a HIPAA violation? Is Big Brother watching us? Are there HIPAA Nazis out there? How much does HIPAA and HIPAA enforcement cost us as tax payers? “We the people” are most likely paying for some HIPAA patrol to seek and destroy all the deadly HIPAA violators out here. Why do we put all this brain power, effort, time, and money into HIPAA when there are so many other things that should take priority? It just seems crazy.

| YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP | |
RE: Shakespeare and Foot Issues
My son had to read Romeo and Juliet for school and I decided to read it also. This is from Act 1, scene 5 Capulet.
"Welcome, gentlemen! Ladies that have their toes Ah, my mistresses! Which of you all unplagued with corns will walk a bout with you.— Will now deny to dance? She that makes dainty, She, I’ll swear, hath corns. Am I come near ye now?"
