PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
TX Podiatrist Advises Against Use of Crocs for Exercise

Crocs are considered to be comfortable enough to do many activities like exercise, but some doctors don't recommend it. "I wouldn't choose a Croc to wear to walk for exercise," podiatrist Ejodamen Shobowale, DPM tells POPSUGAR. "If you're in a situation where you do need support, you need your foot to be working optimally, then I wouldn't choose Crocs." In fact, she wouldn't recommend Crocs for running or other kinds of workouts either.

Dr. Ejodamen Shobowale

According to FeetSeek, Crocs do not offer adequate midfoot and ankle support for strenuous workouts like walking on a treadmill, running long distances, or lifting weights. In addition, its loose fit does not make it the ideal shoe for foot protection or stability at the gym. Instead, it's advisable that you use the appropriate workout shoe depending on what activities you're partaking in. Think walking or running sneakers, lifting shoes, or hiking boots.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 Best Practices for Medical Malpractice Defense

The best way to prevent a malpractice lawsuit is to prepare for the likelihood of being sued, experts say. Check out these 8 medical malpractice best practices.

5). The importance of documentation
  • Becoming better listeners can prevent another common problem in malpractice lawsuits - poor documentation in the electronic health record (EHR). "As a lawyer, there are very few times when I've seen perfect documentation, a record that has everything in it that I would hope to see," Christopher Ryan said. "It's such a big issue, we've given entire presentations on medical record documentation."
  • In addition to traditional notes, Peter Kolbert said that physicians should always chart issues of patient non-adherence.
  • In general, most notes in an EHR will be read maybe once or twice, until there's a lawsuit.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Toe Fracture

My patient sustained blunt trauma to the hallux. We are heading to the operating room for surgical treatment. What CPT code should I use for an excision of avulsion fragment at the base of the proximal phalanx left hallux? The fragment is now located adjacent to the first metatarsal head.

Codingline Member

Response: Likely CPT 28124 is your best choice as this fragment came from the phalanx. CPT 28124 Partial excision (craterization, saucerization, sequestrectomy, or diaphysectomy) bone (e.g., osteomyelitis or bossing); phalanx of toe. Now, should you be repairing the fracture and using a fracture repair open code, the removal of the fragment is included in the fracture repair code.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Biomechanics  and Footwear
From:   Robert Schwartz, CPed

After 49 years of pedorthic practice, my observation is that podiatrists are the only professionals to discuss biomechanics and not start by discussing the shoe. Oh, well!
