MA Podiatrist Discusses Treatment of Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails result when a border of the nail grows into the skin and causes infection. It typically gets hot, red, and swollen and develops drainage. “I see this frequently,” said Dr. Jim Ioli, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. “People have ingrown nails they’ve tried to trim, but their eyesight is faulty and it causes a problem.”
|
Dr. James Ioli |
Quick fix: As long as you’re not diabetic, you can soak your toe in warm water and put an antibiotic ointment and a Band-Aid on it. Long-term fix: If the infection isn’t gone in five days, a podiatrist can remove the offending portion of the nail or cauterize the nail chemically, so it doesn’t grow back in one corner.

Publically-Funded Podiatrist Could Reduce Diabetic Complications: Aussie Podiatrist
Complications from chronic diseases such as diabetes could be avoided if Orange had a publicly-funded podiatrist, according to foot specialist Claire Milligan. Milligan, a former head of the Australian Podiatry Association of NSW and the owner of Alignment Podiatry, said Orange residents were not as well serviced when it came to caring for foot conditions as they should be.
|
Claire Milligan |
“In Sydney, podiatrists are key members of a multi-disciplinary team for diabetic patients who have developed ulcers, and the problem is approached holistically,” she said. “We unfortunately don’t have that in Orange at the moment. “Statistics show an individual can have 27 years of preventative podiatry for the same amount of money it costs the system when someone develops an ulcer that leads to amputation.”

AZ Podiatrists to Conduct Free Diabetic Foot Screenings
Sole Foot and Ankle Specialists, a podiatry practice in Glendale, AZ will be conducting free foot screenings for any diabetic patients on Nov. 7. Drs. Gary Friedlander and Jay Larson are the podiatrists on staff.
|
Drs. Gary Friedlander and Jay Larson |
Friedlander believes in educating diabetic patients on the importance of overall health for the foot and ankle area. “There are now 29 million Americans who have diabetes in the United States,” Friedlander said. “If these patients check their feet daily, there is an 85 percent less risk of amputation. Our practice is committed to educating a diabetic patient to always take care of their feet and not to allow any sore or wound to go unattended.”

Mayor Endorses Tax Collection System Run by CT Podiatrist
Torrington mayor, Elinor Carbone, backs the city’s tax collection system and says she really doesn’t understand why the other 168 towns in Connecticut don’t do it the same way. Torrington’s private tax collector, Dr. Robert T. Crovo guarantees 100 per cent of what it is owed each year in property and sewer taxes. If there is a shortfall, Crovo pays it out of his own pocket. The city is never shorted. Torrington is the only town in the state that uses this method. Crovo has been under contract as tax collector since 1999 and the city hasn’t lost a dime in unpaid taxes.
|
Dr. Robert Crovo |
Taxman Crovo, 63, is also Foot-man Crovo. He graduated first from the University of Connecticut and then from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. He has had a good practice in Torrington for many years. His uncle, Dr. Ray Crovo, was also a podiatrist and at one time also served as the city’s tax collector. It’s pretty clear, given the results of the audit, that Torrington’s tax collection system, assuring the city a 100 per cent collection rate, works well. No wonder the mayor endorses it.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: Today, is there a social media platform that physicians should concentrate on more than the others?
|
Shawn McAskill |
Shawn McAskill: Today, I would tell doctors that they should be paying more attention to Pinterest even more than Facebook. It’s the fastest growing platform, not just in numbers but also for how engaged the users are. Female demographics are leading, but men are catching up. Pinterest is known for using infographics (which is the way of telling a story, conveying information in a graphic format). And infographics is a great way to share information in a way that gets patients to take action.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR)NEWS STORIES |
From: Alex Kor, DPM
I would like to alert readers to an error in this recent article which misquoted me. A provider is not allowed to arbitrarily text patients. This is a HIPAA violation, and I am VERY sensitive to this breach of privacy. Thus, this is NOT how I communicate with my patients. Rather, I use Captureproof ,a HIPAA-compliant mobile app that allows transmission of photos, videos, and yes, texting between patients and providers, and provider-to-provider.
