PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
OHI Acquires Custom Foot Orthotic Laboratory Footbon

OHI, the leading manufacturer in North America of custom, lower extremity orthotic devices and related products announced that it has acquired custom foot orthotic laboratory Footbon. Paul Langer, who founded Footbon in 2009, has joined OHI’s Langer Biomechanics as Vice President of Operations. Mr. Langer, a central figure and key influencer in the custom orthotics industry, began his career at Langer Biomechanics in 1975. Langer’s father, Dr. Sheldon Langer, co-founded Langer Biomechanics in 1969 and is considered by many to be the father of the modern custom foot orthotic industry. A respected innovator in orthotics technology and engineering, Mr. Langer returns to his namesake company after thirteen years.

Paul Langer

OHI President/COO Jason Kraus has a history with both Paul Langer and the Langer lab that goes back to 1982. Kraus explains, “Paul and I each began our careers at Langer and in 1991, we co-founded Benefoot, a company eventually acquired by Langer. I know for a fact that no one is better equipped than Paul to take Langer and its customers to ever greater success.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Early Lessons of ICD-10 for One Practice - Part 5

Medicine remains awesome. I get impatient with so many things in a typical clinical day. However, I have to admit that taking care of patients, building relationships, being the “hero” at the end of the day remains a privileged position. So, while I may become disillusioned with many of the nuts and bolts of payment for my services, the service I provide is still a joy.

So, my fellow ICD-10 veterans, I hope that the next few weeks bring you many approved claims, a good laugh at some of the more ridiculous codes, a set of short-cuts to work-around the inconvenience of ICD-10, and hope that as we become increasingly burdened with regulations, we will find a way to clear the clutter and refocus on what matters most — what happens between us and our patients.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Activity-Induced Edema and Heat, Lower 1/3 B/L Legs

My patient is an educated very active, otherwise quite healthy, Caucasian female in her early 50s, originally from S. Africa. She initially reported she began an aerobic step class in June of 2010, which led to the insidious onset of arch pain in her left foot. Discontinuing the step aerobics class, she went on a trip to South Africa. During a 100 degree day, she began to experience burning and swelling in both feet. However, no swelling was visible to the eye. The sensation of the edema lasted until the temperature dropped, but the burning continued. Returned home to the U.S., she continued to experience tingling and burning with walking and standing.

In December of 2010, the family took a trip to Reno, Nevada. The patient stated she wore a pair of fur boots that “almost drove her crazy”, experiencing burning, hot, and red feet. At that time, her symptoms were...

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Medicare Fraud and Podiatrists
From: Michael J. Schneider, DPM

PM News posts articles referring to Medicare fraud adjudications committed by podiatrists. Is this LEVEL of fraud seen in all medical disciplines such at orthopedics, general surgery, internal medicine, etc., or is it specific to podiatry?

Michael J. Schneider, DPM, Denver, CO

Editor's Comment: The Office of the Inspector General recovered $3.3. billion in taxpayer dollars in Fiscal Year (FY) 2014 from individuals and companies that attempted to defraud federal health programs. Fraud committed by podiatrists represents only a tiny portion of that sum. PM News publishes reports to alert podiatrists to the type of fraud being investigated and prosecuted in the hope that readers will avoid being caught in OIG's web.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Lasik Surgery and Podiatry

As a podiatrist who wears glasses, I'm curious to hear any feedback from anyone who has had Lasik eye procedures. How well are you able to focus up close when working? Once I tried contacts, but I couldn't focus well up close wearing them.
