Infected Nails Require Rapid Treatment: TX Podiatrist
An injured toenail will fall off when a new nail has grown underneath. Problems arise when the toenail becomes infected, transforming from an unsightly inconvenience to a potentially grave injury. "The biggest fear is the proximity of nail to bone. Chronic (toenail) infections can lead to a bad infection in the bone," said Dr. Andrew J. Schneider, a Houston podiatrist and runner. "An infection in the bone must be treated surgically and with IV antibiotics. It's nothing to be fooled with," he said. That's what happened to Yao last year. He missed 21 games.

Dr. Andrew J. Schneider |
Short of surgery, how should a runner treat a black toenail? If it doesn't hurt, don't mess with it. If the pain of the initial injury lasts more than a day, visit a doctor, who will drain the blister between the nail and the bed, possibly by drilling a small hole in the center of nail. Don't assume that a black nail is a goner. The sooner you visit a doctor after the injury, the better your chances of retaining the nail. "It's not too late; it's never too late," Schneider said.

NYCPM Holds First Annual Residency Fair
|
NYCPM Residency Fair |
On Friday, October 6, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) held its first annual Residency Fair, at which representatives from thirty-seven hospitals talked with students about the hospitals’ externships and residency programs. Six additional hospitals sent literature and DVDs. All second- and third-year students attended, as did many first- and fourth-year students. The NYCPM Alumni Association sponsored a lunch that kicked off the four-hour Fair. According to both students and the hospitals’ representatives, the Residency Fair was an extremely successful and informative event.

PedAlign Costs Less Than Plaster.
“Plaster casting was a waste of time and the pressure technologies resulted in poor quality orthotics –I started with PedAlign about a year ago and have been very impressed with the system and the quality of orthotics. Many of my patients are runners who have tried different orthotics over the years. Most everyone seems to like the PedAlign system of scanning and their orthotics best. I recommend PedAlign to all podiatrists without reservation.”
Jaryl G. Korpinen, DPM, Plano and McKinney, TX
PedAlign: the most sophisticated digital prescription interface to an orthotics lab ever created. There is simply no other choice for fast simple and high quality orthotics: Don’t compromise: Modernize: www.pedalign.com; 866-733-2544, info@pedalign.com

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
Change of Venue Denied For NJ Podiatrist
A judge Thursday denied a request to have the criminal trial of Ronald Sollitto, the podiatrist charged with manipulating an elderly Spring Lake widow into leaving him her fortune, conducted outside Monmouth County because of past and expected coverage of the case by the Asbury Park Press.
The change of venue was sought by Sollitto's attorney, John S. Furlong, citing extensive coverage by the newspaper of a civil trial that pitted Sollitto against the Spring Lake First Aid Squad over the estate of Madeleine Stockdale.
The judge at the civil trial found that Sollitto and attorney Michael A. Casale, who prepared a Stockdale will that made Sollitto her primary beneficiary, conspired to wrest the widow's $6 million fortune from her.

QUERIES |
Query: Fischer Auto Tank X-Ray Processor I am looking for any feedback from anyone who has purchased this processor. It sounds like a decent processor which doesn't require any external plumbing, but I have no other information to go on with this processor. Scott Kissell, DPM, East Stroudsburg, PA
Query: Vicks VapoRub
Alright, I heard it again today. "Vicks VapoRub cured my toenail fungus." That must have been at least the hundredth time over the past few years usually being accompanied by "my medical doctor told me to do it." Any thoughts on why it seems to work?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: Preventing Medical Identity Theft From: Neil H. Hecht, DPM
I recently saw a TV news show about this and was amazed to learn about patients who use other people’s insurance cards. One incident even involved a woman whose hospital-based childbirth utilized stolen insurance information! We will now ask every new patient for a photo ID and inform them that we are attempting to prevent medical identity theft for their benefit (and for ours).

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP |
Esther was one of my favorite patients. This spicy senior always had a good joke for me, and most of them were dirty ones. Not "little old lady" dirty, which would usually rate an R: these were always XX rated. She would also roar with laughter at the raunchiest ones I'd give back to her. I could go on and on with stories about this wonderful lady. She lived independently well into her late 80's but spent the last few years in a nursing home.
About two weeks ago, at age 94, she was sitting in her room when a nurse came in and asked her if she needed anything. "Yes, some money and a man!". With that, Esther closed her eyes and slipped away. A fitting end to a picturesque woman.
