PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
IL Podiatrist Pivots to Survive During The Pandemic

Mary Ann Bender, DPM of Weil Foot and Ankle Institute is a small business superhero. The OakPark-River Forest Chamber of Commerce recently asked her, "What is one thing you have had to do to "pivot" to survive the Covid shutdown?"

Dr. Mary Ann Bender

"Initially, I worked part-time hours, with limited staff, and patients spaced out to avoid contact with each other. As the pandemic continued, I decided to merge my private practice with a larger one to provide my patients with the safest environment possible and to offer security for my practice," says Dr. Bender.

PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
HHS Phase 3 Provider Relief Funding Expanded

HHS is making a larger number of providers eligible for Phase 3 General Distribution funding, including:
  • Providers who previously received, rejected, or accepted a General Distribution Provider Relief Fund payment. Providers that have already received payments of approximately 2% of annual revenue from patient care (Phase I which was received as an automatic deposit from HHS and Phase II which required an application and was either approved or denied based on funds received in Phase I) may submit more information to become eligible for an additional payment.
  • BIG CHANGE. Healthcare providers that began practicing January 1st through March 31st 2020. This includes Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, dentists, assisted living facilities, and behavioral health providers.
Apply early (applications will be accepted from October 5 - November 6, 2020)

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Weight-bearing CT will Become the ‘Standard of Care’ in Foot and Ankle Surgery

With the body of literature growing fast, weight-bearing CT will become the standard of care in foot and ankle surgery, according to a presenter at the virtual American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Annual Meeting. “What will be the role of weight-bearing CT (WBCT) in foot and ankle surgery? In my opinion, it will definitely change our practice,” Cesar de Cesar Netto, MD, PhD, an assistant professor in the department of orthopaedics at the University of Iowa, said. “It is already happening, and I do not think there is any turning back. There is no way around using WBCT for assessing foot and ankle pathologies.”

Dr. de Cesar Netto said many WBCT concepts have already influenced his practice, and he hopes they will help to influence other practices for specific pathologies. He said WBCT can be of use for hallux valgus, and there are currently 30 publications on PubMed that research the relationship between WBCT and hallux valgus.

MEDICAL-LEGAL TIP OF THE DAY
Presenting Your Medicare Case to the ALJ- Part 11

28. What if you naturally speak quickly? Not good. Speak slowly. Watch any news show and concentrate on the speed of the person delivering the news. They always speak slowly and deliberately and that is how you should speak during the hearing.

29. When is it okay to interrupt the judge when she is speaking? Never. The judge can and will interrupt you, but you are NEVER EVER to interrupt the judge when she is speaking. When the judge is speaking, you are silent. Period.

30. What determines the outcome of the hearing, and how long will it take the judge to decide? In most cases, your letter brief/proposed decision and the first two minutes of the hearing will determine the outcome of the appeal. You may be upset to read this, but the outcome of most jury trials is determined by the time the opposing attorneys have finished their opening statements—before a shred of evidence has been presented. If your letter brief/proposed decision presents a convincing argument supported by appropriate medical sources, and your two-minute, common-sense presentation rings true to the judge, chances are you will win.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Denis LeBlang, DPM, Nick Turner

There is a company in Los Angeles called Osada, Inc. They have the equipment that you need to drive the Shannon 44 burr. You will be happy with their equipment.

Denis LeBlang, DPM, Congers, NY

Many physicians have opted to use the Osada Portable All-in-One PEDO-30W drill unit along with the Shannon for in-office MIS. DocShop Pro carries this unit and all other Osada units. Additional saw options are available as well to complement your Shannon.

Disclosure: I am the Vice President of DocShop Pro.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Connie Lee Bills, DPM

I am shocked. I wouldn’t have actually touched the child, but definitely would have insisted that the mother deal with it immediately. I’ve had a similar situation during a procedure with a child. It was horrible.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: George Jacobson, DPM

Drs. Jacobs' and Shea's comments go well with my recent posts about the “no show” new patient. There is a change as they both described which leads to the lack of keeping a new appointment as they are still just rude customers. Maybe they even order food and don't pick it up. Once these new customers are seen by us physicians, most of us naturally convert them to patients who do garner some respect for our care.

Most value the physician-patient relationship that we develop and become lifelong patients that help build our practices. There was another old adage that says "like refers like." When I first started in practice, I saw everyone's worst patients. In some cases, I was their 4th podiatrist. A well-established colleague and friend, Henry Merritt, DPM, told me not worry that someday I'd be able to "weed the garden." Pull out those weeds (charts) that don't have you feeling better after they leave. Yes, our lives matter too! If there is no legal need for me to follow a patient, we just won't invite the rude customer back. I hope you noticed that I turned them from a patient to a customer.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

What to wear when walking Scooby-Doo?

The look evokes a cartoonish vibe that Twitter wasn’t going to let slide. Culture vultures online are decrying the haute hoof as a dupe of Scooby-Doo’s paws. The canine comparison was first flagged on Twitter by fashion writer Hannah Tindle, who posted a side-by-side shot of the sandal from Givenchy’s lookbook and a picture of Scooby’s haunches, and cartoonist Cathy Nolan says it’s pretty on point.
