IPMA Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Podiatric physicians from every corner of Illinois will congregate this week to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) with governance meetings and scientific sessions. IPMA was registered with the State of Illinois in 1915 as the Illinois Association of Chiropodists. In 1987, it officially became known as the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association and today represents more than 800 podiatric physicians in Illinois.

Dr. Brent Parry

“As an organization designed to support doctors of podiatric medicine, IPMA has grown and developed into the major source for foot and ankle health care information for the public and is active in the Illinois legislature regarding foot and ankle care issues and access to foot and ankle care by podiatric physicians. The IPMA is an advocate for all citizens of Illinois as well as for its member doctors,” said Brent Parry, DPM, Peoria, IL, President of the IPMA in 2014-15.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
FL Podiatrist Hosts Two-Time Pulitzer Prize Winning Author

On the 10th year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the Rollins Center for Health Innovation hosted a campus presentation and book signing by physician and journalist, Sheri Fink, MD, PhD. She received her first Pulitzer Prize in 2010 for her book Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm Ravaged Hospital, which described the landmark investigation of patient deaths and the subsequent quest for truth and justice at a New Orleans hospital during, and the days following, Katrina.

Drs. Sheri Fink and Chet Evans

Dr. Chet Evans, the Executive Director of the Center for Health Innovation, said, “Dr. Fink’s presentation was riveting to the over 200 people in attendance. I highly recommend her book - a critical examination of medical and patient-care ethics in the context of the extreme events during and following Hurricane Katrina.” Dr. Fink is a correspondent for the New York Times, where, along her colleagues’ stories on the West Africa Ebola crisis, she was recognized with the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Early Lessons of ICD-10 for One Practice - Part 4

Nothing is as bad as it seems. ICD-10 has loomed large over the last few years. It is not to be feared. Like many administrative tasks, it has to be managed. We need to get creative on how to incorporate a new set of rules into our clinical practices, but we also need to keep things in perspective.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Workers Compensation Insurance

I was just told that my $500,000 of Worker's Compensation insurance was inadequate and that one million is what "most places" are doing now. Any thoughts?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Dock Dockery, Nicholas A. Ciotola, DPM, MA

The photos look very similar to cases that I've seen of cutaneous lichen planus, but why guess and ask others to guess? Get a couple of good punch biopsies of a representative lesion or two, send to a dermatopathology lab (like Bako Pathology) and find out the correct diagnosis. Then you will know how best to treat this condition.

Dock Dockery, DPM, Seattle, WA

Pruritic purple polygonal papules are characteristic of lichen planus. Sites of predilection include the ankle and anterior leg. This often idiopathic condition may also be induced by medications, including beta-blockers. Vesicular or bullous lesions may also develop. Histopathology will confirm the diagnosis. As a sidenote, if the patient is being treated with Lamisil for onychomycosis, consider also a nail biopsy if not already performed. Nail involvement occurs in 10% of all lichen planus cases.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Forefoot or Rearfoot Reconstruction? (Estelle Albright, DPM, Andrew I Levy, DPM)
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM

If I get this straight, the doctors responding to the rearfoot vs. forefoot post believe that one should only fix what hurts. The problem is that if one only reconstructs a forefoot in the face of an obviously unstable MTJ complex, I can tell you from experience, the forefoot deformities will eventually recur.

A significant percentage of my 27 year old surgical practice has been spent repairing previous surgeons' work who did not recognize this truth. I do my best to explain this to patients with the disclaimer that if we do "the easy" forefoot surgery, experience has taught me that there is a greater chance of recurrent problems as compared to the more difficult surgery. I wish we had some solid research in this area and not just anecdotal evidence.
