PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Developing Foot and Ankle Strength Can Help Prevent Injuries: ME Podiatrist

According to Dennis Claire, DPM, "Foot and ankle injuries are among the most common injuries in the general population, which isn’t surprising given that the foot and ankle support your entire body weight and serve as the base for almost all movement. A strong foot is a foot that is more robust to the challenges it faces on a daily basis. Our feet can take three to four times the weight-bearing load of our bodies. This load strain can be focused towards certain areas of the foot and ankle, making overuse injuries possible, if not likely."

Dr. Dennis Claire

"Proactively adding some foot and ankle strengthening exercises into your routine can be a good way to prevent injuries from developing. Some basic exercises to start with might include toe curls with a towel looped around the foot, seated heel and toe raises, or balance exercises where you stand on one foot at a time. There are many more ways to incorporate foot strengthening into your daily life but give these a try to start. Many people that do this effectively create a stronger foot that is resistant to overuse injury, bunions, hammertoes, and foot arthritis," says Dr. Claire.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
IA Podiatrist Returns Home to Practice

When Kelsey Sukovaty, DPM began seeing patients at the Midwest Foot & Ankle Center in Fort Dodge this week, it marked a kind of homecoming for her. After spending years away from the area training to be a podiatrist, the Manson native has returned to continue practicing her chosen medical specialty.

Dr. Kelsey Sukovaty

She went to Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, where she earned her doctor of podiatric medicine degree. That was followed by a three-year residency in Waterloo. Dr. Sukovaty said she was doing surgery five days a week at Mercy and Allen hospitals in Waterloo.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 Best Practices for Medical Malpractice Defense

The best way to prevent a malpractice lawsuit is to prepare for the likelihood of being sued, experts say. Check out these 8 medical malpractice best practices.

2) Bedside manner matters
  • To mitigate risks, physicians should understand some of the common drivers of malpractice lawsuits in the first place. Bedside manner really does make a difference to patient experience.
  • "I've seen situations where people chose not to pursue litigation because they liked the physician, whereas people will pursue litigation because they did not like the physician," Ryan said.
  • In general, with patients who have complications, physicians who have been super responsive get sued less frequently than physicians who aren't as responsive," said Peter Kolbert, senior vice president for claims and litigation management for Healthcare Risk Advisors, a strategic business of The Doctors Company in New York City.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: How Insurers Exploited Medicare for Billions
From: Richard Rettig, DPM

This article from the NY Times speaks to how the Medicare Advantage plans use our chart reviews to glean extra diagnoses for higher payments. We already know that. But there is additional information regarding the extent that they have been found guilty of fraud on account of this. Also the relative penetration of each plan in the marketplace. Also the percent of members in these plans geographically.  And that besides gleaning our charts, some have sent doctors and nurses to patients homes to try to find even more diagnoses. And some pay primary care doctors bonuses based on the number of serious diagnoses treated, financially encouraging them to add as many as possible.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Book Review: Dr. Richard Blake’s Practical Biomechanics for the Podiatrist, Book 2
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM

Richard L. Blake, DPM, MS has just published his second book in his four-book series on the subject of Practical Biomechanics for the Podiatrist. In this 327-page hardback book with over 350 color  photos, Dr. Blake has compiled one of the most complete books, to date, on the science and art of treating patients with biomechanically-related foot and lower extremity pathologies.

The book starts with the chapter on “Basic Components of a Lower Extremity Examination” where Dr. Blake reviews the examination concepts recommended by Dr. Merton Root and colleagues from...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3A
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

In response to my esteemed colleague and good friend Wenjay Sung, I recognize the particular focus and expertise of both ABPM and ABFAS and would prefer that these boards find a way to merge, rather than compete with each other. Having multiple boards creates division in the profession and confusion in the medical community and among the public. Podiatry is its own tribe – we don’t need more tribes within us. I’m in favor of simplifying our board certification by consolidating into a single board that represents all of podiatry. Certainly that board should maintain high standards, offer CAQs or whatever they want to call them to recognize additional expertise outside the basic standards that they establish for fellowship, and ultimately include all podiatrists who seek board certification and measure up to its established standards.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3B
From: Joan Oloff, DPM

I have been following the thread regarding the surgical board certification and have a few observations. It has been noted that several older doctors have shared passionate feelings about this topic. This is not an accident. There was limited hospital privileges early in their careers. Allopathic physicians had little knowledge of or respect for the training of podiatrists. The way to change minds was, and is, through training, knowledge, and outcomes.

In order to achieve parity, it is, in my opinion, important to have parity in our board certification process. There is no surgical MD who could be board certified through a non-surgical...

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Outrageous (Drivable) Shoe of the Day

Would you say that this car "runs" well?

This giant Converse tennis shoe was built out of a 1993 Nissan Altima, so it isn’t all that old, but I guess you could say that it “runs” great!
