TUSPM Honors Memory of PA Podiatrist
On September 28th a ceremony was held at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) in memory of Marc A. Karpo, DPM to mark the second anniversary of his death. Dr. Karpo died on September 13, 2016 en route to the clinic.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Mrs. Bonni Karpo, which will ultimately reside in the student lounge. Many faculty, staff, and students told humorous and heartwarming stories about their interaction with Dr. Karpo.

Ann Tien, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist, has joined the Silver Cross Medical Staff. Dr. Tien attended the California College of Podiatric Medicine in Oakland, CA. She completed her podiatry residency at Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago.

IN Podiatrist is Target of Attempted Phone Scam
A few hours after receiving a phone call from the person he thought was the Jasper County Sheriff regarding a contempt of court citation, Dr. Paul Sommer was still visibly aggravated by the time he arrived at his office. The Valparaiso podiatrist also has a satellite office in DeMotte, a small town in Jasper County. So when the county sheriff’s office called him about failing to appear for jury duty at the county courthouse, it sounded legitimate to Sommer, if not factual. The call came from Remington, IN, according to his office’s caller ID. The officer’s name was “Ed Cox,” who even gave his badge number to Sommer. “It all sounded weird, but all it takes is a hint of plausibility to believe any phone scam.

The caller told Sommer that his contempt of court citation and bench warrant could be expunged from the courts system if Sommer – you guessed it – paid the caller money. In this case, through two $500 “vouchers” from a local pharmacy store. Sommer and his staff immediately contacted that pharmacy and they also contacted police.

IL Podiatrist Discusses How to Buy a Good Walking Shoe
The difference between a comfortable stroll and a painful one? A good pair of walking shoes. "You want to make sure you have a sneaker with a stiff midsole,” says Melissa Lockwood, DPM, ABPM-certified podiatrist and founder of Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates. “When you try to twist the shoe back and forth, it should be stiff. There can be flexibility in the toe box, though.” A mesh upper will give you that space for toes to breathe and move around.

Meanwhile, opt for a rubber outsole. “Man created concrete, so we need something that supports us on that concrete,” Dr. Lockwood says.

Legal Considerations of Practice Expansions - Part 3
3. Expansion through merger or acquisition. Another popular practice expansion approach is merging or integrating with a different practice of the same or different specialty. There are many supergroups in which certain specialties have been rolled together into a larger practice with multiple locations, sometimes expanding beyond state lines. Such an expansion can benefit physicians who are looking for managerial support, additional clinicians, marketing, and patient volume. On the other hand, the larger such groups become, the more physicians may lose a sense of the personalized practice they once enjoyed. Nonetheless, supergroups appear to be a growing trend throughout the marketplace.
It’s important to obtain complete legal and financial advice before entering into any such transaction as there are many legal, compliance, tax, and other issues to consider. Smaller expansion efforts through strategic mergers with complementary specialties is also a great way for practices to expand. By merging into a single entity, groups can often share overhead, staffing, ancillary services, and space. The result can be a larger footprint in the region, increased revenue, and locked-in patient referrals. Again, there are many legal and related issues to discuss with a lawyer when considering such an expansion.

Five states do include the medical and surgical treatment of hands in podiatric statutes: Alaska, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Source: ACFAS state scope of practice provisions. I practice in Minnesota, and while I could trim fingernails and be within my scope of practice, I choose not to.

I treat patients exclusively in SNFs and will only debride/I&D fingernails if they are dystrophic, mycotic, or have a paronychia. The durable power of attorney (DPOA) or patient is then informed that they should follow up with a dermatologist.

Yes, hardly a month goes by when a patient does not ask me to cut his or her fingernails. On Friday, another tenant in our medical building came in an asked me to cut one of his fingernails. I refused. I still remember one of my professors at NYCPM, over thirty years ago, boasting to the class at what a good deed he did for an indigent patient by cutting her fingernails. The problem is that in most states, it’s against the law. Dr. Block said it well when he said that such an action could subject a podiatrist to professional discipline.
I see no reason why our local state societies should not push for legislation which would allow podiatrists to cut fingernails but until this happens, we need to refuse.

Dr. Levy's original post citing an association between diuretic use and increased risk of amputation is simply a report of a published article. I encourage everyone to fully read the study before in any way suggesting that this "association" is anything more than just that. With the cardiovascular co-morbidities attendant to a diagnosis of diabetes, the benefits of judicious use of diuretics far outweigh the possible association with amputation, even if further studies prove a direct correlation.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Frank’s passing. He was actually my father’s podiatrist in University Heights, Ohio. I did a “private office clerkship” with him for one week during my senior year at CCPM. I remember he had late office hours one night. He had had a full day of patients and a full waiting room. At about 7 pm, he walked out to the waiting room, sat down, and said, “I’m just too tired to see any more patients” and sat with the few patients remaining to chat for about 15 or 20 minutes. They enjoyed it immensely!
A real “mench” and a fine doctor who was at the forefront of foot surgery for the time, including hospital privileges which was a rarity in 1976.

Diabetic Limb Salvage Fellowship
Two positions for a 12-month Diabetic Limb Salvage fellowship beginning July 1, 2019. Candidates must complete a podiatry residency by June 30, 2019 and be eligible for a Texas Podiatric Medical License. Training involves all aspect of diabetic foot management. Curriculum focuses on surgical limb salvage, and medical management of the complex, high-risk diabetic patients at risk for limb loss.
