PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
Podiatrist Helps Create Bookshelves for Underserved Schools in Costa Rica

Retirement from podiatry doesn’t necessarily mean withdrawal from life. Jeff Kittay, DPM moved to Costa Rica in December 2015 for a new phase in his life and quickly became involved with a local men’s group. While mostly a social gathering and charitable organization, when the affiliated women’s group asked for some help, the men stood up. The women have been raising money in order to purchase and donate books to many of the local rural underserved schools.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony for latest bookshelf delivery

The schools have no actual libraries and the men were asked to create bookshelves for that purpose. Kittay, along with his two partners, Don Gibbons and Robert Carpenter (aptly named), designed and built sturdy four-shelf units that have become the de facto libraries. So far, eight units have been constructed, with seven more requested by other schools.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS
CA Podiatrist Runs as Part of a Team for Tustin Council Seat

City Council candidates Dr. Allan Bernstein, Austin Lumbard, and Chuck Puckett officially launched their campaigns together in May at Tustin Ranch Golf Club. Billing themselves as like-minded conservatives, the three men have continued to make appearances at events, including a second Team Tustin fundraiser in June. In Tustin, voters citywide will choose from a ballot of four candidates, including two incumbents, for the three available seats.

Pokemon Go "Increases Risk of Death by Distraction" - AZ Podiatrist

American doctors have described how a patient lost control of the truck he was driving while trying to capture a Pokemon sitting in the road. Researchers say these cases show the potential for "distraction-related injury and death" with the rise in popularity of games such as Pokemon Go. Two cases, reported in Oxford Medical Case Reports, are among the first of their kind to appear in a medical journal.

Dr. David Armstrong

Co-author Dr. David Armstrong, professor of surgery at the University of Arizona, said: "Our world is filled with digital distractions increasing at a near logarithmic rate - both in work and in play. What we have to figure out as a society and, frankly, as a species, is how to dose these distractions to help make our lives better and not shorter."

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
CA Podiatrist's Foot Candy Co. Announces Trump-Clinton Foot in Mouth Award

Toe-Rific® Chocolates & Candy has announced a "Footsie Award" that will be awarded to either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton based on votes from the public. "We want to use our foot shaped candy as a way to spotlight the many 'foot in mouth' statements that have been 'kicked around' during this unique Presidential race," said Dr. Mark Wolpa, podiatrist and founder of Toe-Rific® Chocolates & Candy.

Dr. Mark Wolpa

The public is encouraged to send an email to FootsieAward@google.com  with either a Trump or Clinton quote that exemplifies why the candidate is "toe-tally worthy" of winning the Footsie. "The first debate was filled with a treasure of potential winning statements," said Wolpa. "I am sure the follow-up debates will not disappoint."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
9 Tips for Surviving after the ICD-10 Grace Period Ends - Part 9

Oct. 1, 2016. This date has likely been highlighted on many a calendar at physician practices around the country. That's because this date marks the end of the one-year grace period from CMS for practices' use of these new diagnostic codes for Medicare fee-for-service claims. In other words, the flexibility on not having to be specific in ICD-10 coding will end on this day:

9. Update Encounter Forms and References Tools

"After identification of unspecific code assignment and subsequent education to assign more specific codes when supported by the medical documentation, the next step will be to update all encounter forms, reference tools, and diagnosis 'favorites' lists — both paper- and EHR-based — with diagnoses that contain more specificity.

"This can be done concurrently when updating these tools with the new 2017 ICD-10- CM codes. Also, practices will want to ensure that any [Local Coverage Determinations] or [National Coverage Determinations] associated with services they provide are reviewed since the unspecified ICD-10-CM codes may be removed as a diagnosis supporting medical necessity." - Kat Austin, CPC

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Things to Do When Selling or Merging a Practice
From: James Koon, DPM

Since there are so many of us merging/becoming employed/retiring, perhaps this may be an opportune time to help others out. For instance, what do you do when an insurance company requests an overpayment refund from almost two years ago when your office has been closed/not doing business in a year?

Are people aware that you should keep old medical and financial records for seven years? There are likely to be storage costs for that which can be...
