IPMA Begins Billboard Advertising Campaign
The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) this week began a billboard advertising campaign that reminds patients that podiatric physicians treat a number of injuries and problems associated with the ankle. A series of six IPMA billboards will appear from October 6 - October 19 on the west side of I-294 facing south, visible to northbound traffic a quarter mile from Wolf Road, near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
|
IPMA Billboard |
Each billboard contains the IPMA website to encourage patients to find a podiatrist in their area, via the IPMA’s "Find a Physician" function on its website. The billboard campaign idea was born from talks conducted by the association’s public relations committee, which has recently shored up its communications and social media efforts too.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
FL Podiatrist Provides Pro-Bono to Unisured
For nearly a year, Dr. Neil Shechtman has been riding a wave of altruism and helping folks in the Lake Placid area get the medical care and attention they might not otherwise be able to afford. In Nov. 2013, Shechtman, an internist, has offered medical care, service and advice to those who are without medical insurance or are at or below 200 percent of Federal Poverty Guidelines. Dr. Richard Lewis, a podiatrist from Boynton Beach sees Samaritan’s Touch-referred patients in Shechtman’s office Tuesday mornings.
|
Dr. Richard Lewis |
Lewis, who sees one to two Lake Placid patients for an hour and a half each Tuesday, said the work done through Samaritan’s Touch and its doctors, including Shechtman, provides an “invaluable” service. He said one of the main benefits is patient paperwork goes through Samaritan’s Touch in advance, giving doctors more time to deal with treatment rather than record-keeping. In practice for 32 years, Lewis said the Samaritan’s Touch program in Lake Placid and around the county is similar but smaller in scale to what’s offered at the Caridad Center in Boynton Beach, the largest, free healthcare clinic in Florida. He said he’s offered pro-bono services at his office for years.

2015 Medicare Part B Premiums and Deductibles to Remain the Same as Last 2 Years
Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Sylvia Burwell announced today that next year’s standard Medicare Part B monthly premium and deductible will remain the same as in the last two years. Medicare Part B covers physicians’ services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment, and other items. For the approximately 49 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Part B, premiums and deductibles will remain unchanged in 2015 at $104.90 and $147, respectively.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Neuropathy S/P Electrocution
I have a patient who has a severe painful neuropathy throughout the majority of his body. The patient sustained a severe, almost life ending electrocution while at work. He was hospitalized for many days and has other symptoms including memory loss and some decreased mental status. Given the fact that this neuropathy is directly related to having been electrocuted, would there be any difference in the way one might address or treat his symptoms, given its etiology? He was prescribed, and has already tried a regimen of Neurontin, with little success.
Besides topical compounded medications along with all other oral supplements that can be dispensed (ALP, L-Carnatine, L-Methyl Folate, etc.), can anyone suggest other possible treatment options?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Thomas Graziano, DPM, MD
This patient needs referral for a venous duplex ultrasound, first and foremost, to determine the exact location of the reflux causing the varicosity. This may be in a more proximal valve, not just a local incompetent venous malformation. Distal varicosities are oftentimes the "tip of the iceberg", stemming from a more proximal cause either in the saphenous vein or incompetent valves between the superficial and deep system. Avoid having "tunnel" vision (no pun intended) and manage the patient comprehensively. You can focus on local decompression or treatment after the patient is worked up appropriately.
