PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 |
Heel Pain Commonly Caused by Plantar Fasciitis: IL Podiatrist
Marlene Reid, DPM, a podiatric surgeon at Family Podiatry Center in Naperville, Illinois, recently discussed the most common causes of heel pain and explained ways to mitigate any pain flare-ups of plantar fasciitis during an interview with Radio Health Journal. "Wearing a shoe with a stable, firm heel counter morning to night, literally from when you wake up in the morning to when you go to bed at night ...is important to stabilize the heel,” says Dr. Reid, a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association.
|
Dr. Marlene Reid |
Dr. Reid discussed the stages of plantar fasciitis, and that sometimes the condition evolves from acute to chronic and requires different types of treatment options currently available. "Now we offer a variety of regenerative types of medicine" which gives your body the resources it needs to heal itself,” said Reid.

Walking to School is a Healthy Habit: CA Podiatrist
"Walking to school is a great way to add healthy steps to the day, encourage healthy habits at a young age, and contribute to healthy weight, improved cardiovascular health, bone and muscle strength, sleep, mood, and academic performance. Regular physical activity can also help to reduce the risk of such chronic diseases as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer in the future," says Diane Koshimune-Guadron, DPM, California Podiatric Medical Association President.
|
Dr. Diane Koshimune-Guadron |
"Walking can be an invigorating way to start the school day, and proper footwear, fit, and comfort are vital for making walking a pleasurable experience and lifelong habit. Care should be taken with purchasing shoes, especially for children whose feet are still developing," says Dr. Guadron.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Aussie Podiatrists Urge Medicare Benefits for Indigenous People
Indigenous people, especially those living in remote areas, are missing out on crucial care and suffering painful delays in seeing specialist surgeons, according to the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons (ACPS). ACPS is calling for better access to the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS) to enable them to assist patients suffering acute pain and reduced quality of life.
|
Dr. Rob Hermann |
ACPS President Dr. Rob Hermann said untreated foot pain has a significant impact on First Nations patients, especially those living outside of capital cities. "Most of us take for granted the ability to go about our daily lives free of pain and unrestricted. But due to the lack of funding and access, that's just not the case for thousands of patients. Issues concerning foot health can have drastic impacts on quality of life. Along with increased pain for patients and higher risk of complications, delayed care could lead to more costly future treatment and long-term debilitation," he said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Five Financial Reports You Need to See Monthly
There are five financial reports that physicians should review no later than the tenth day of every month, for the previous month's activity.
1. Profit and Loss (P&L) Statement is a tally of revenue and expenses for a given period, and includes key financial indicators such as gross revenue, net revenue, and overhead. A well-developed P&L displays dollars and percentages for each revenue and expense line item, and compares them against previous periods and budget amounts. When reviewing the P&L, start with revenue. How does revenue this month compare to the same month last year? Is the practice on track to meet projections?
Then scrutinize expenses. Are they within budget? Comparable to the same period last year? In line with industry data for your specialty? If expenses seem "high," investigate instead of hastily slashing them. We've watched many physicians cut staff to save money, only to see overtime rise and collections drop because there weren't enough people to cover key tasks.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Krystexxa and Gout
From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM
This week, I received unsolicited a box containing 100 of these 24-page magazine-brochures and a display for the reception room. I read it as it is very informative about the condition of gout and treatment options, but the main purpose is to introduce a new uric acid lowering medication option, Krystexxa, to our gout patients.
Personally, I found it offensive that when I read page 7, entitled "Your healthcare team", there is no mention of our profession. I went to the website for the manufacturer (Horizon) and the product. They have plenty of photos of gouty feet, they have a bar to click on to "find a gout specialist" but there are no podiatrists listed when you enter a zip code, mostly rheumatologists, but also others as well. Our profession is not even listed under "other specialists" which includes nephrologists, nurses, and rheumatologists.
How can it be in the year 2023, with all the efforts and advances of our profession, that we are not even recognized or listed in their advertising and promotion, nor on their product website that a podiatrist is part of the healthcare team who diagnose, manage, and treat patients with gout? I suggest that if you also receive the same box, you take one brochure out and read it, and then file the rest of them in the circular file, as I did. Maybe our leadership in the APMA can get involved with this company and educate them about our profession and role in the healthcare team and how involved we are in the care and treatment of patients with gout.
Keith L. Gurnick, DPM, Los Angeles, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE) |
From: Jack Ressler, DPM
I am not surprised about the treatment/harassment Dr. Dellinger received from Cigna. Harassment like this should be reported to the insurance commissioner of his state. As for the $30 per chart he requested, that amount is too low. Fifty dollars per chart and more should be the universal amount charged. They will not pay it and you will avoid having you or your staff strapped with the tedious task of chart preparation especially if a high number of charts are requested.
Jack Ressler, DPM, Boca Raton, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (HEALTHCARE ISSUES) |
From: Gary S Smith, DPM
Dr. Jacobs has educated me for over 30 years via articles and seminars and now, I would like to educate him. There is no such thing as "rise in healthcare costs", only rise in healthcare insurance costs. Up until 1996, Medicare had a cost-of-living increase for healthcare providers built into it. Since then, not only have we not gotten a raise but have had our fees cut. Other insurances like Highmark, etc. cut how much we got paid for procedures 75% at the same time and have not raised it since. If any of us were greedy, we sure wouldn't still be doing this.
Doctors who are employees are totally clueless when it comes to what their services are worth because they are paid well regardless. They are not greedy as much as they are "influenced". Employed podiatrists don't work for the patient; they work for the healthcare entity. It is not their job to improve the patient's situation; it is their job to make that entity money. If they cured every patient in the world with cancer, they would still get fired if they didn't order enough tests, make enough referrals, or do enough procedures. Sadly, it is the future of healthcare and we all must deal with it.
Gary S Smith, DPM, Bradford, PA
