TX Podiatrist Discusses Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction
Women over 40 often show up in Anne Sharkey, DPM's office complaining of swelling and pain in one of their feet. They tell her they feel like they sprained their ankle, but they didn't do anything that would have caused such an injury. When she examines them while they’re standing up, one foot looks normal, while the arch on the swollen one is flat. Many of these patients are dealing with failure of the posterior tibial tendon, which is the tendon that provides support to your arch while you’re in motion. Menopause can increase the risk.
|
Dr. Anne Sharkey |
“We’re seeing a relationship between the decline in estrogen and tendon dysfunction,” Dr. Sharkey says. Patients do best when they seek treatment right away; usually, that means a combination of physical therapy, a cast or boot, and orthotics. However, “Sometimes we catch it really late because people just didn’t realize, or they thought it was a sprain and walked through it for years,” she says. “Then there’s surgeries and reconstructions to bring that tendon back to where it was.”

PROMOTING PODIATRIC MEDICINE & SURGERY |
FL Podiatrist Provides Surgical Internship Program to Undergraduates
Each semester, Gideon J. Lewis, DPMs’ unique internship provides three or four pre-medical students exposure to the operating room alongside community surgeons. Interns don’t just stand in the corner and observe. They participate in patient care and research and get a first-hand understanding of surgical procedures and medical pathologies. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Lewis’ internship has trained 85 interns and 98 percent of them have gone on to medical school, at universities including UCF, Case Western, Harvard, Miami, and the University of Pennsylvania.

“This program was born from a desire to provide students with something I never had — hands-on, immersive exposure to surgical medicine while still in college,” said Dr. Lewis, who is an affiliated faculty member with the UCF College of Medicine and director of the Foot & Ankle Sports Medicine Institute. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see former interns now thriving as medical students, residents, and even practicing physicians.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS |
Aussie Podiatric Surgeons Now "Surgical Podiatrists"
From October 2026, the title "podiatric surgeon" will change to "surgical podiatrist". This will provide greater clarity for the public by ensuring a more accurate representation of the professional title associated with practitioners who perform surgical procedures within the podiatry profession. Health ministers recently approved the change following a recommendation from the Podiatry Board of Australia (the Board), guided by an independent review and extensive consultation.
"This is an important step in giving consumers greater clarity and transparency around the practitioner they are seeing and their training and qualifications," said Dr. Kristy Robson, Chair of the Board. In Australia, there are 42 registered podiatric surgeons with specialist registration, comprising 0.7% of the 6,187 registered podiatrists (as of 30 June 2025).

NBC 10 News has obtained court documents regarding a domestic violence charge against a Rhode Island foot doctor. He’s believed to have a connection to a potential cast member of Bravo’s highly anticipated show, The Real Housewives of Rhode Island. Brian Pontarelli, a podiatrist, is accused of placing an electronic tracking device in or on a car without consent, which is a misdemeanor domestic violence offense. Pontarelli is set to be arraigned in court Tuesday.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: George R Vito, DPM
I think the profession of foot and ankle surgeons has learned a lot over the past 30 years in reference to Charcot reconstruction. I was with Drs. McGlamry and Banks when we first started performing reconstructions with a two-team approach; the surgery lasted 8 hours, with Dr. McGlamry taking the first four-hour shift, with Dr. Banks on the second 4-hour shift. Needless to say, this may not have been the best approach, but then again, who knew what the best approach was. Then we dove into the external frame game. This my friends, started in 1993, when the first ring fixator was placed on the foot and ankle in Macon, Georgia, not in Tucker GA. I taught the leaders in the profession, i.e., Drs. Kalish, Laporta, Jimenez, Hutchinson, Schuberth, who in turn taught their residents, and in turn, their residents, which has been about 33 years in the process.
We all tried every different way to deal with the Charcot foot and ankle. From waiting to full consolidation to performing surgery as soon as...
