AT THE COLLEGES
TUSPM Holds Annual Family Day

The Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) recently held its Third Annual Family Day. The event is held to generate a sense of community and to allow the family members of our current students to gain an appreciation for the podiatric curriculum.

TUSPM Annual Family Day

The event was attended by well over 100 participants (current students and their family members). Interactive workshops were conducted by students and faculty. Dr. Laurence Levin,  the keynote speaker, focused his remarks on tangible and intangible skill sets of a good physician. Family Day also had a bit of a carnival feel with face painting, cotton candy and popcorn, a photo both, as well as access to a few oversized games.

MA Podiatrist Discusses "Growing Pains"

According to podiatrist Louis DeCaro, DPM, "Growing pains is a common diagnosis in the lower extremity of kids. I have a problem with the term growing pains. It is something that can happen in any part of a child's life. They can't play sports, they can't run, they can't do anything without pain. It actually comes from the mechanics of the way their feet are moving and can cause pain higher up in their bodies."

Dr. Louis DeCaro

"What we like to do is to screen kids as to how they walk and their foot structure and foot type. Often, we can make adjustments in their shoe with an orthotic device to change the mechanics, and thus address the problem that is causing their pain. Shin splints are a good example as well as kids who cramp up after sports or kids who can't sleep at night because they are getting leg pain," says Dr. DeCaro.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS
CA Podiatrist Runs for Huntington Beach City Council

Voters will select four candidates from a pool of 15 on Nov. 6 to serve on Huntington Beach’s seven-member City Council. Michael Simons, DPM is a semi-retired podiatrist. He served on the Huntington Beach Union High School District board for 27 years; California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Podiatric Medicine; Huntington Beach Community Services Commission; Huntington Beach Infrastructure Advisory Committee; and the Memorial Health Systems Institutional Review Board.

Dr. Michael Simons

"Today, the issues that have risen to the top of importance to the citizens of Huntington Beach reflect the many situations that impact and infringe on quality of life on a daily basis. These include high-density development and the traffic issues it causes, the negative impact that sober-living homes and short-term rentals have on neighborhoods, the continuing rise of homelessness and noise pollution from commercial aircraft," says Dr. Simons.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Legal Considerations of Practice Expansions - Part 1

Expansion through acquisition of additional space and equipment. A practice might consider expansion if it has outgrown space for its providers, and/or has inadequate equipment or other facilities in which to serve its patients. This might mean opening a second office or acquiring additional equipment to meet demand. Sometimes, expansion goals can be achieved through short-term space and equipment leases, which can help a practice get a feel for expansion without a long-term capital commitment. Even renting space through a space and/or equipment sharing arrangement with another physician practice can allow for just the right amount of expansion that a practice might require.

A practice might also be ready to acquire a building, enter into a more expensive office build-out, or invest in new equipment. Any practice ready to make such a commitment should work with their bank and/or financial advisers to determine the best approach to assume such debt and to make certain the anticipated increase in revenue will justify the expense.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: HCPCS L1930

Can a podiatrist bill and be reimbursed for HCPCS code L1930?

Joanne P. Sowinski, Office of Lombardi & Silver, Bayside, NY

Response: The following is the description for L1930: Ankle foot orthosis, plastic or other material, pre-fabricated, includes fitting and adjustment.

While this is for a pre-fabricated device, and sometimes patients would most likely have a cast made for a custom device, there is no reason why a podiatrist can’t bill and be reimbursed for this code.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Ed Davis, DPM

Dr. Stempler requested assistance with finding affordable health insurance. The market for individual health insurance policies as well as small groups is not favorable. The best solution I have found is to join a PEO. PEOs or professional employer organizations were once known as employee leasing companies. These organizations allow small employers to aggregate resources so that they can offer the type of employee benefits that larger employers may offer.

There is a cost for PEO services but it is offset by lower health insurance costs as well as other benefits. Not all PEOs are the same, so contact several to compare. Our office uses Justworks which is a New York-based PEO.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2
RE: The Passing of Paul Scherer, DPM

I was saddened to read about the passing of Dr. Paul Scherer. He was not only a colleague but a good friend. Dr. Scherer was Dean of the California College of Podiatric Medicine when I attended. My father had unexpectedly passed away from a myocardial infarction while I was home for Christmas break. He was understanding of my circumstances and allowed me to have a leave of absence so I could help my mother, brother, and sister through this difficult time. We became good friends as a result of the circumstances and kept in touch throughout the years. He had a big heart and was a very compassionate individual. He will be truly missed. My sympathy goes out to his family.

Chris Robertozzi, DPM

Paul was the guru of biomechanics and a true disciple of Drs. Root and Weed. He imparted great knowledge on the subject over 30 years ago when I was a student at CCPM. His teachings have been with me ever since that time. All his tutelage was certainly reinforced by Drs. Kirby, Grady, and Petrov before I graduated, and I was so glad to have him as a professor and a colleague. He will be missed.
