FL Podiatrist Recommends Towel Stretch to Flex and Relax Foot Muscles
According to Lori Grant, DPM, the toe towel crunch is one of the most effective stretches you can do because it helps with the tiny muscles of the feet. "Put some type of washcloth or bathcloth on the floor and then use your toes to try to pick it up," says Dr. Grant. "Physical therapists will actually make you try to pick up marbles with your toes and try to move them side-to-side, but I don't think I would be able to do that. So, instead, I recommend you put a little terry cloth or washcloth on the floor and try to scrunch the toes or pull the toes up to try to pick that up. You’ll be flexing the ankle up and down and moving the ankle round and round and then scrunching the toes to pick things up."

"As far as stretching goes, there are not too many that you can do," says Dr. Grant. "We talk about pointing and flexing your ankle— so point your foot down and then flex your ankle up—and you can also rotate the ankle round and round."

AAPSM Holds Successful Meeting in Columbus, OH
Despite weather issues from the recent hurricane, the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) held a successful stand-alone conference in Columbus, Ohio. The attendees were treated to a variety of state-of-the-art sports medicine and biomechanics topics. The AAPSM presented its presidential plaque to outgoing president Michael Donato, DPM.

Balance Health’s Annual Physician Education Conference Takes Place in Chicago
Balance Health (BH), a national podiatric organization that is both majority-owned and run by podiatrists, hosted its Annual Physician Education Conference in Chicago in September. The event brought more than 165 BH doctors and additional team members together for the two-day CME conference, which included additional training sessions for new graduates entering practice. Particular emphasis was placed on the development of relationships among the BH physicians who came together from 9 states.

Attendees and industry partners said it was one of the best education conferences they have been to in years, touting sessions covering topics such as tackling heel pain, surgical complications, tips and pearls, limb preservation, and much more. There was also ample opportunity to collaborate and share best practices for patient care with peers from the 9 states served by BH. "The camaraderie, collaboration, and interaction of younger and more experienced physicians from all the practices in the 9 states we serve was inspiring," said Lowell Weil, Jr., DPM, Program Director of the Conference and the Executive Chairman of Balance Health.

5. Collect a flat amount in advance
Many practices collect a flat amount in advance of procedures when it is unclear how much the patient will owe. After the claim has been adjudicated, either bill the patient the balance or issue a patient refund.

As everyone knows, the reimbursement dollars go down, yet the longshoremen will get a 60% increase over 6 years. Something is wrong here. Doctors deserve to be compensated well but when you take the insurance money like cocaine you get addicted. This year, I decided to give myself a 10% increase on all my fees. As a concierge direct pay podiatrist, I can do what I feel is fair and necessary. Guess what? NO one left my practice with a 10% fee increase.
Patients know that the cost of living has increased with inflation, and they understand when you raise your fees. I encourage everyone to go to the direct pay model. Also, as a member of the APMA, I have suggested that they form a pay committee so that members can share information about our success.
