PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
NJ Podiatrists Form Super Group

ProActive Foot and Ankle Associates has announced the formation of a single specialty podiatry super group in northern New Jersey. The group’s members include: Drs. Spero Demoleas, Dino DiTrolio, Jeff Gewirtz, Vincent Giacalone, Steven Levy and Larry Price. They have six offices, with plans to expand to eight by year’s end.

(L-R) Drs. Spero Demoleas, Vincent Giacalone, Larry price, Steven Levy, Dino DiTrolio, and Jeffrey Gewirtz

The formation of this group was necessitated by the overwhelming compliance, insurance, and operational struggles facing the sole practitioner today. ProActive’s model allows for maximum divisional autonomy while providing centralized support necessary to survive in today’s challenging healthcare environment.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Doctors and Tax Fraud Schemes - Part 6

Here is a list of the IRS’s own “2018 Dirty Dozen” most prevalent tax scams.

11. Abusive tax shelters: Abusive tax structures (including captive insurance companies and conservation easements, among others) are sometimes used to avoid paying taxes. The IRS is committed to stopping complex tax avoidance schemes and the people who create and sell them. The vast majority of taxpayers pay their fair share, and everyone should be on the lookout for people peddling tax shelters that sound too good to be true. When in doubt, taxpayers should seek an independent opinion regarding complex products they are offered. (IR-2018-62)

12. Offshore tax avoidance: Successful enforcement actions against offshore cheating show it’s a bad bet to hide money and income offshore. People involved in offshore tax avoidance are best served by coming in voluntarily and getting caught up on their tax-filing responsibilities.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEACH)
RE: Diuretics Associated with Major Increased Risk of Amputation in Type 2 Diabetes
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

The American Diabetes Association newsletter, DiabetesPro SmartBrief, on October 2, 2018 reported that researchers at the meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes analyzing almost 1,500 type 2 diabetes patients found those who took diuretics had a 75% or more increased risk of having an amputation or an angioplasty or bypass, compared with those who did not take the drug. It was revealed that 13% of diuretic users had an amputation or other procedure on their lower leg, compared with 7% of those who did not take diuretics.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

When I was in practice, I was searching for health insurance at affordable premiums. I looked at organizations that offered group plans. At one time, I was a member of the Washington Writers Guild. I had no particular interest in the organization, but they offered affordable group insurance and I qualified for membership due to a number of nationally published articles I had written. Their annual dues were a pittance compared to the large insurance premium I would have had to pay. Search for local organizations and join up - even if you have to volunteer.

RE: The Passing of Joel Cook, DPM

Dr. Cook was an attending when I was a resident in Memphis. He was a great teacher and an excellent foot and ankle surgeon. I remember him being very kind and dedicated to perfecting surgical techniques. He was very skilled at surgery. I learned a lot from him and have continued to use techniques he taught me. He was a class act all the way.
