NC Podiatrist Discusses Causes of Bromhidrosis
The vast majority of the time, stinky feet are caused by one thing: Bacteria breaking down fatty acids in your sweat. Sounds innocent enough, but, as some of you know all too well, the biochemical process can create an odor powerful enough to clear a room when you slip off your shoes.
|
|
Dr. Jane Andersen |
The bacteria on your feet is actually the same as what lives all over your body. So why are perspiring pads so much stinkier than, say, a sweaty forearm? You have more sweat glands on your feet—250,000 on each foot, in fact—which means more perspiration to turn into odor, explains Jane Andersen, DPM, communications committee chair for the American Podiatric Medical Association and podiatrist at InStride Chapel Hill Foot and Ankle in North Carolina. Plus, your feet are typically kept in an enclosed environment (socks, shoes), and less ventilation means more perspiration, she adds.

Podiatrist Ranked #23 Highest Paying Job
Mic crunched the most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and found the 30 highest-paying positions in the United States: More than half are in medicine.
Highest-paying job #23: Podiatrist
Average annual pay: $136,180
Projected growth (2014-2024): 14%
One reason podiatrists are the lowest-paid medical professionals among the top 30 earners is because they are not trained at (allopathic) medical school, but rather complete four-year graduate training at podiatric medical school. Podiatrists provide medical care for people with foot, ankle, and lower leg problems. They diagnose illnesses, treat injuries, and perform surgery involving the lower extremities. Industry growth is expected because of an increasingly active and longer-living population, coupled with chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity.

OrthoArizona Expands Foot and Ankle Division
OrthoArizona is expanding its foot and ankle division after it added six podiatrists in a merger with the East Valley Foot & Ankle Specialists. Those doctors are Lewis Freed, Todd Gunzy, Todd Haddon, Doug Griffin, Phillip Richardson and Scott Wyant.
|
|
Dr. Jason Lake |
Dr. Jason Lake (orthopedist), foot and ankle specialist and board member of OrthoArizona, said the practice always had orthopedic surgeons but needed podiatrists. “There is an overlap in the practices, but each of us do different things and it’s really hard to call yourself a true foot and ankle institute if you can’t cover everything,” he said. OrthoArizona has 65 musculoskeltal specialists working at more than 30 offices throughout the Valley.

CT Joins Orthopedic Associates of Middletown
Dr. Tee Adeleke, a foot & ankle surgical and advanced reconstruction & trauma specialist, has joined Orthopedic Associates of Middletown. His previous fellowship at the American Foundation of Lower Extremity Surgery & Research in New Mexico, along with his comprehensive training at Des Moines University and a podiatric residency at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital are just some of the distinctive personal details that support OAM's continued trajectory as one of the most advanced and successful orthopedic specialty centers in New England.
|
|
Dr. Tee Adeleke |
After completing a fellowship, Dr. Adeleke became immersed in comprehensive training from the knee to the foot, which is a departure from the way many podiatric students learn. "Most podiatric physicians are trained in the foot and ankle, but I have been extensively trained from the knee down, and I know that makes a big difference in how I am now able to understand, diagnose and treat my patients," said Adeleke.

Alleged Negligent Performance of Indicated Bunionectomy
Facts: This was a podiatric case involving a 38-year old plaintiff who underwent a bunionectomy that was performed by the defendant.

| ACA UPDATE | |
Ailing Obama Healthcare Act May Have to Change to Survive
The fierce struggle to enact and carry out the Affordable Care Act was supposed to put an end to 75 years of fighting for a healthcare system to insure all Americans. Instead, the law’s troubles could make it just a way station on the road to another, more stable healthcare system, the shape of which could be determined on Election Day.
Seeing a lack of competition in many of the health law’s online insurance marketplaces, Hillary Clinton, President Obama, and much of the Democratic Party are calling for more government, not less. Mr. Obama’s signature domestic achievement will almost certainly have to change to survive. The two parties agree that for too many people, health plans in the individual insurance market are still too expensive and inaccessible.

9 Tips for Surviving after the ICD-10 Grace Period Ends - Part 6
Oct. 1, 2016. This date has likely been highlighted on many a calendar at physician practices around the country. That's because this date marks the end of the one-year grace period from CMS for practices' use of these new diagnostic codes for Medicare fee-for-service claims. In other words, the flexibility on not having to be specific in ICD-10 coding will end on this day:
6. ICD-10 Codes That Focus on Quality Initiatives
"We need to have a discussion about how the diagnostic codes may help shape the future of practices through quality initiatives and how vitally important it is for practices to submit clean claims utilizing the coding system to the highest level of specificity and to capture co-morbid conditions in reporting when needed to demonstrate the complexity of the patient." - Rhonda Buckholtz, CPC
