Studies Show Internet Research Does Not Make An Expert: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Unfortunately, the mindset has developed that, armed with the plethora of data on the Internet, anyone can do some research and become an expert. Clearly, this is not the case. A superficial understanding of some condition or a particular therapy or treatment is of benefit. But a lay individual, someone who hasn’t spent thousands of hours studying the complexities of the systems composing the human body, cannot be an expert in a week of study."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"It has become clear that information obtained from the Internet, not the result of well-constructed medical research, must be viewed cautiously. The accuracy of many of the articles available should be read with a critical eye and their conclusions questioned. Decisions regarding medical care should not be made based on sources from the Internet but a joint decision, between the individual who has the disease and the expert knowledgeable in that disease," says Dr. McLean.

Foot Massager Can Help Alleviate Nerve Pain: MO Podiatrist
Those who suffer from peripheral neuropathy know it doesn’t manifest in just slight aches and pains. “Neuropathy refers to a process causing inflammation of the nerves, leading to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and sometimes burning sensations,” explains Timothy Oldani, DPM, a podiatrist at Missouri Foot and Ankle.
|
Dr. Timothy Oldani |
“The most common causes of peripheral neuropathy are diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, metabolic disorders, and alcoholism.” Although more research is required, preliminary studies show that using a foot massager can help alleviate nerve pain. The best foot massager for neuropathy can’t reverse the cause, but it can help lessen its symptoms.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Collection Tactics for Your High-Deductible Patients
High-deductible health plans are on the rise. Here are 10 methods to ensure your practice collects from patients with these plans.
3. Give patients the option
For patients who have a history of 'forgetting' co-pays or are frequent no-shows, offer the option of either pre-paying a nominal non-refundable deposit or rescheduling their appointment until they are ready to pre-pay. Patients adjust to this policy, and our late-cancel and no-show rates have declined.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING & BILLING) |
Query: Medicare Bundling
I have been told by my billing executive that when billing Medicare, if you do a procedure like a hammertoe procedure, and then within the next three months, you do a shortening osteotomy of the metatarsal, Medicare will bundle both of them together and not pay you on the second procedure. I have now seen this a few times. Is this legal, and is there a way around this from a modifier standpoint?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Irv Luftig, DPM
Although it may be a good thought to unionize physicians, podiatrists, dentists, etc., it's a really bad idea. It was a tactic used by various medical groups a few times up in Canada and each time ended quickly as a miserable failure. There was absolutely zero support from the general public. There was palpable outrage from the public. Simply put, doctors (MDs, DOs, DPMs, DDS’) are perceived as wealthy because "we all make hundreds of thousands of dollars."
The public doesn't care about overhead, salaries, etc. Most people make $50,000 or less, maybe a bit more. You will be viewed as greedy, wealthy, uncaring, and if you withhold services in a strike, then watch out for the swift reaction from politicians and the public. Politicians will make mince meat out of you and the public will hate you. It won't be pretty and you will potentially be losing your patients' trust for years.
Irv Luftig, DPM (retired), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM
I think it is an absolute travesty that as the years went on, podiatrists have been paid less and less. I agree with Dr. Kass that something must be done. However, it is my opinion that a union will have only limited success because insurance companies will still retain the power of payment. After all, they collect the premium dollars. They don't want to share that money with doctors. You can go on strike, but you will be limited to the power of negotiation and the amount of money that insurance will be willing to let go of.
There is a movement (finally) in medicine back to private practice/direct-pay models. I am friendly with many MDs and DOs who are leading the charge away from...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Jon Purdy, DPM
This is yet another joke by Medicare on the unsuspecting. I believe it was 2021 when they changed the rules on the L1951 and probably some others. I’ve been burned by RAC for having dispensed these on patients such as those with CMT drop foot. I did my peer-to-peer to find out this new “rule” had been added buried deep in the layers of determinations and edits.
Pre-fabricated is just that, and by definition should not need “customization.” Yet a brace that fits perfectly as is, is no longer adequate if it is not “adjusted” in some fashion. It’s just getting ridiculous out here. But that’s the game. Change it up even if it makes no sense, they’ll miss it, and we can get them until they figure it out. Doctors and patients suffer because of it.
Jon Purdy, DPM, New Iberia, LA
