PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Motivation and Adherence Key to Treating Onychomycosis: PA Podiatrist

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is shining the spotlight on a topic we usually shy away from: fungus. October 1st through 5th is the CDC’s Fungal Disease Awareness Week, bringing attention to fungal diseases and the importance of their early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment.

Dr. Tracey Vlahovic

When it comes to treatment, however, motivation and adherence are often key. “For patients with toenail fungus, a long-term treatment, which is typically a year, due to how the nails grow, is important in treating the infection,” said Tracey Vlahovic, DPM, Professor, Department of Podiatric Medicine at Temple University. “To increase your chances of getting rid of toenail fungus for good, it’s important to keep all follow-up appointments with your healthcare practitioner and use your treatment as prescribed.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
DC Podiatrist Applies Churchill Quote to Minimalist Running Shoes

A few years ago, “minimalist shoes,” designed to mimic barefoot running, were all the rage. The theory might have been good, but the results weren’t. “To borrow from Winston Churchill, never has so much damage been done to so many by such little shoes,” says DC podiatrist Stephen Pribut, DPM. In particular, many runners suffered forefoot pains and sometimes stress fractures because of the lack of cushioning. Others complained of calf strains and Achilles tendinitis.

Dr. Stephen Pribut

A backlash followed quickly, but so did a new approach among shoe companies. Although they brought back thick cushioning, they also abandoned bulky devices intended to increase motion control.

Dr. Steven Kravitz

Additionally, APWH provided three workshops, all of which were sold out. Each workshop had 100 attendees and had a large waiting list. These lectures and workshops and many more topics will be presented at APWH Annual Conference to be held in Philadelphia October 12 to 14.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Doctors and Tax Fraud Schemes - Part 5

Here is a list of the IRS’s own “2018 Dirty Dozen” list of most prevalent tax scams.

9. Falsifying income to claim credits: Con artists may convince unsuspecting taxpayers to invent income to erroneously qualify for tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. You are legally responsible for what is on your return, and you will incur large bills for back taxes, interest, and penalties.

10. Frivolous tax arguments: Frivolous tax arguments may be used to avoid paying tax. Promoters of frivolous schemes encourage taxpayers to make unreasonable and outlandish claims about the legality of paying taxes despite being repeatedly thrown out in court. The penalty for filing a frivolous tax return is $5,000.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jengyu Lai, DPM, Elliot Udell, DPM

Starmark/Trustmark could cover as few as five lives when the entity becomes self-funded.

Jengyu Lai, DPM, Rochester, MN

I am a graduate of Landmark Worldwide. They teach that if you have a complaint, it is ineffective to gossip about it. Instead, the issue should be raised with someone who can do something about it.

This applies here. Many of us have, and will have, problems attaining affordable health insurance, but we are not the ones who can do anything about it. The ones who can do something about it are our congressmen who could introduce legislation to make the Affordable Health Care Act affordable for everyone. Now, before Election Day is the best time to contact them.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1
RE: The Passing of Joel Cook, DPM

Dr. Joel Cook of Memphis recently passed away after a long illness. Joel graduated from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1969. Following his residency, he returned to Memphis and joined Bob Gold in his practice.

Dr. Joel Cook

The practice of Gold and Cook was well known throughout the community, not only for their expertise but also because their office was next to Graceland (Elvis' home), and he was their patient. Joel was loved by his patients and peers as a kind and gentle person. He leaves his wife Gina, daughters Dana and Chelsea, and three grandchildren.

RE: The Passing of Paul Scherer, DPM

I was very saddened to hear about the passing of one of my CCPM biomechanics professors, colleagues, and friends, Dr. Paul Scherer.

Dr. Scherer was the Dean at the California College of Podiatric Medicine during my podiatry student years. Later, Paul was a member of the CCPM biomechanics faculty during my Biomechanics Fellowship where I learned from him nearly daily, greatly enjoying his personality, intellect and...

Editor's note: Dr. Kirby's extended-length letter can be read here.

It’s difficult to express how saddened I am by the sudden and shocking loss of Paul Scherer—a longtime supporter, core faculty member, and former dean of CSPM. On a personal level, I will miss Paul’s generosity and his always upbeat, glass is half-full outlook on life. Professionally, we’ve lost our Carl Sagan, an inspiring voice of biomechanics for generations of students and podiatrists. I can hear him lecturing now, “when the 1st metatarsal goes up, the big toe don’t work.” My sympathies go out to Paul’s family and his many friends.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2B

RE: The Passing of Paul Scherer, DPM

It is with deep regret that the American Board of Podiatric Medicine learned of the recent passing of Dr. Paul Scherer. Paul’s prominence as a long-time leader in the profession was utterly well deserved, as an educator in the area of biomechanics, through his lecturing, and as owner and CEO of Pro-Lab, one of the finest orthotic labs in the nation. To the extent that platitudes must be given at such a time of sadness, his contributions to the profession over an extended period of time certainly secure his...

Editor's Note: This complete letter from the Board of Directors, American Board of Podiatric Medicine can be read here.

The American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Dr. Paul Scherer. Dr Scherer was a pioneer and leader in the field of podopediatrics. He left an indelible mark on our entire profession, especially with regard to the treatment of the pediatric patient, that will never be forgotten. Through his hard work, he has also helped so many kids all around the world! We will all miss him.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2C

Paul was a gentleman. He will be greatly missed.

Pete Harvey, DPM, Wichita Falls TX

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Paul Scherer, a giant of biomechanics. Dr. Scherer was instrumental in capturing my interest in foot typing in 1996 when he published:  Scherer P, Morris J: The Classification of Human Foot Types; 1996; Clinical Biomechanics of the Lower Extremities; R Valmassey, Editor. In personal conversation, in 2008, I explained to him that I was try to grow his “baby” into an adult by expanding his nine types to sixteen. I hope that functional foot typing will be added to Paul’s long list of biomechanical firsts as part of his legacy.
