PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
RE: Effective AR Management Strategies

There are scores of effective AR management strategies, proven by experts of the medical billing industry, which have helped healthcare organizations to cut through the noise and manage their financial health.

6. Identify the reasons for denial: As per Equifax, poor billing practices cause doctors in the US to lose an estimated $125 billion each year. To ensure that the billing collections are improved, it is significant to identify the reasons which result in claim denials. A few of the reasons for claim denial are mentioned below:
  • Data error in registration
  • Lack of necessary information
  • Duplication of claims
  • Incorrect patient information in the records
  • Credentialing errors
  • Documentation errors

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Ingrown Nails in 3 Month Old Infant

A  3-month old infant presented with ingrown toenails. What are the best treatment options for ingrown toenails on the medial border bilateral halluces?

Ingrown Nails in 3 Month Old Infant

I'm particularly interested in the following questions: 1. Slant back vs. avulsion vs. phenol matrixectomy? 2. Address medial borders only…or include lateral borders? 3. With or without local anesthesia? 4. In-office vs. hospital? 5. What is the youngest patient you’ve ever performed ingrown toenail procedure on? 6. Do infants “grow out of this”….or does it need to be addressed surgically?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Billing Service

Can anybody suggest a good billing company for podiatry? In today’s hiring climate, I'm finding a need to start outsourcing some things.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
RE: Importance of Watching Patients Walk For Surgical Planning
From: Ben Pearl, DPM

There has been much discussion about the disconnect between surgical training and biomechanics. Last month, a panel of podiatrists debated the approach for a case study concerning off-loading an ulcer.

In the following video, Michael Downey, DPM discusses the importance of lengthening the Achilles tendon for an equinovarus foot with an ulcer. The gait exam was a key part of the surgical planning. A trend towards grand rounds style case studies versus simple question and answer sessions is emerging as in-person podiatric education meetings resume.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Jack Ressler, DPM

I use sanding discs from Moore. If you are referring to the "pinhole" design that needs a small screw inserted into the mandrel, I would highly recommend the snap-on disc that simply attaches to a snap-on mandrel. Order the course garnet. They are much more efficient. I get mine from Federated Medical Supplies, formally known as Karasity's Medical.

Disclosure: I have no financial relations with this company.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM

I’d like to take issue with Dr. Ford’s comment about board certification and its level of competency. State licenses determine minimal competency - board certification is at a much higher level. I don’t know where he was quoting from, but minimal competency is significantly different than the level of board certification and we cannot lose track of that.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

For the past decade or so, I have been fortunate enough to be invited by the American Orthotics and Prosthetics Association (AOPA) to attend their annual meeting. It is a treasure trove of both scientific and trade information. A few of the same vendors you see at podiatry meetings are here. Unfortunately, there are only a few, as many who are here tell me the attention they get at podiatry meetings is appalling. This is because of a lack of interest, due to the very reasons Dr. Phillips mentions in his article and what many others have seen happen with the younger generation of DPMs. That is a loss in interest in biomechanics.

What stands out with AOPA meetings over the last decade, however, is the variety of innumerable in-depth research-based lectures and posters on biomechanics. These are rare at podiatric meetings and...
