Flip-Flops Best Utilized In Gyms: NC Podiatrist
Don't let your guard down after your workout either, says Jane Andersen, a podiatrist in Chapel Hill, N.C., and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association.
|
Dr. Jane Andersen |
Warm, wet locker rooms are hot beds for microbes. Showers, in particular, "are notorious for carrying lots of germs like fungi that can cause athlete's foot," she says.
Other foot hazards: bacteria that could infect an open wound and viruses that cause plantar warts. So get some flip-flops, pack them in your gym bag, wear them in the locker room and then take them home and let them dry out before using them again.

PHARMACEUTICAL NEWS |
Some Medical Schools Say No to Drug Reps' Free Lunch
Stanford, Yale and the University of Pennsylvania have adopted policies to create a brighter line between medicine and marketing.
On Oct. 1, Stanford University School of Medicine in California closed its last avenue for pharmaceutical marketing on campus, shutting down drug company freebies no matter what their size. The ban includes everything from free lunches to pens touting the latest medication to hit the market. Also, pharmaceutical sales representatives must make appointments if they want to talk with physicians. The stricter rules come after the school prohibited drug samples several years ago, except at medical students' free clinics.
The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine put a policy similar to Stanford's into effect July 1. Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT., banned all drug company gifts to physicians in 2005 but still allows free drug samples.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: Stuart Leeds, DPM
I first met Stuart many years ago at an AAPSM meeting. He was always a humble and understated forefather to the specialy of podiatric sports medicine. He and I communicated many times about things over the years. I will miss his insights and friendship. Lloyd S. Smith, DPM, Newton, MA
RE: New CMS 1500 Forms From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
If you can avoid it, don't order anymore current CMS 1500 forms! From Jan 2, 2007 through March 30, 2007 CMS will accept the current version of the CMS 1500 form or the new version.
As of April 2, 2007 the current version of the CMS 1500 form will no longer be accepted and will be totally replaced by the new version.
The major difference between the two forms is the new form will enable you to place your NPI number in the field labeled NPI and your current legacy number in the unlabeled block above each NPI field.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Woodside, NY, pkesselman@pol.net
RE: The OIG and Podiatry From: Lloyd S. Smith, DPM APMA worked with the OIG on several projects over the years. We rarely felt we were fairly and openly treated. We were promised opportunities to comment on their findings, but were not given that opportunity. I do not think podiatry has been singled out, but simply the entire goal of the OIG is to investigate all areas that receive government funding. They are not your friends. They are very powerful investigators. One word of caution - make sure you respond to audit requests from Medicare and other insurers. Make sure you understand what is being requested and provide that information in a timely fashion. If you are concerned about a significant and wide ranging audit, get appropriate legal advice before responding. Lloyd S. Smith, DPM, Newton, MA, lloydpod@yahoo.com
