PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Avoid 100% Cotton Socks: GA Podiatrist

While socks might seem like the second-class citizen to your shoe game, they’re incredibly clutch when it comes to comfort. Sports socks can easily shield your feet from blisters or scrapes, or they could do the exact opposite. Making a smart choice starts with the material, says Ramona Brooks, DPM, a podiatrist associated with the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons. Avoid 100 percent cotton (especially if you get extra-sweaty), and opt for synthetics (like polyurethane) or wool to help wick moisture, she suggests.

Dr. Ramona Brooks

Of course, make sure your athletic socks fit tight enough so they don’t slip, and are loose enough that they won’t leave marks on your skin, Dr. Brooks says. And feel free to switch up the height and thickness of the sock, depending on what you like best and the weather.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
PA Wound Clinic Celebrates 15 Years

The Penn Highlands Clearfield Wound Clinic is celebrating its 15th anniversary of providing exemplary care to patients. One of the clinic’s physicians, Podiatrist Dr. Tom Hoffman, said the clinic basically operates the same way it did when it opened in 2003, but patients now have groundbreaking and innovative treatment options they didn’t have then.

In addition to Dr. Hoffman, the clinic’s physician staff includes podiatrist Dr. Tammy Carlson-Little, Podiatrist Dr. Courtney Johnson-McKissick and the clinic’s director and general surgeon Dr. Robert E. Steward Jr. Patient volume at the clinic has climbed dramatically during the years it has been open.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
CA Podiatrist on a Mission to Change Women's Fashion Footwear

Ten years ago, Joan Oloff, DPM never would have guessed she’d be at the center of “knockdown, drag-out fights” in an Italian shoe factory, or fear being “killed and thrown into the Adriatic Sea.” Those are not the adventures podiatrists typically experience. But then again, Oloff is not a typical podiatrist. Under a brand that bears her name, she is on a mission to change the way women’s shoes are constructed — even if it sparks a few disagreements with shoemakers.

Dr. Joan Oloff

“When you’re a female and American, going to a place like Italy and telling them there’s a better way to make shoes, it’s not always well accepted,” she said. “Mark my words, this is the beginning of something totally new — a totally different category that hasn’t been done before,” said Dr. Oloff, who added that there has never been a better time to bring a change to women’s fashion.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Doctors and Tax Fraud Schemes - Part 4

Here is a list of the IRS’s own “2018 Dirty Dozen” list of most prevalent tax scams.

7. Excessive claims for business credits: Avoid improperly claiming the fuel tax credit, a tax benefit not available to most taxpayers. The credit is usually limited to off-highway business use, including use in farming. Taxpayers also should avoid misuse of the research credit. Improper claims often involve failures to participate in or substantiate qualified research activities or satisfy the requirements related to qualified research expenses.

8. Falsely padding deductions on returns: Do not falsely inflate deductions or expenses on tax returns to pay less than what you owe or potentially receive larger refunds. Do not inflate (and always be able to prove) charitable contributions and business expenses, or improperly claim credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

Paul contributed to our profession authoring numerous scientific papers, book chapters, as well as conducting and organizing a variety of scientific workshops at both national and state meetings. His passion for lower extremity biomechanics was imparted to the hundreds of students, residents, and practitioners whom he taught in both the classrooms or college workshops, domestic or international meetings, and countless other venues. Paul authored the textbook Recent Advances in Orthotic Therapy to assist practitioners in making critical clinical decisions based upon current evidence-based research.

He was a former Dean of the California College of Podiatric Medicine, CEO of Prolab Orthotics USA, founder of Podiatry Plan Organization, Scientific Chairman of Prescription Foot Orthotic Lab Association (PFOLA), past president of American Physician Fellowship for Medicine in Israel, founder of the Podiatry Service and residency program at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, and countless other organizations. Paul is survived by his wife Annie, 3 sons and 5 grandchildren.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

RE: The Passing of Paul Scherer, DPM

I have just learned of the passing of Dr. Paul Scherer. This is certainly a very sad day and a major loss to our profession. Paul was one of my surgical residents and became an academic colleague at the CCPM for many years. To state that he was an extremely gifted medical educator and an innovator in the field of biomechanics is not doing him justice. He influenced the lives of thousands of podiatrists around the world. I have always been proud of what he has accomplished and he will be truly missed. May he rest in peace.

Joshua Gerbert, DPM, Kamuela, HI

Paul Scherer epitomized for me what I aimed to become, physician, educator, and entrepreneur. In each, he was as good as they come. After countless dinners together, I wanted, for once, to pick up the tab. He told me, “When I retire.” I appreciate the lesson to take care of the next generation. Paul always toasted, “To health.” That’s now more meaningful than ever and will serve as a reminder to cherish what time I have and to celebrate memories of the friendship that we shared.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Alicia Ericksen, DPM

I'm responding to Dr. Mark Stempler's concern with obtaining affordable health insurance for his family. My family was in the exact same predicament, with similar premium and deductible; absolutely unaffordable. We took a leap and became members of a bill sharing network. A few of my colleagues and patients have done this. There are several out there, and we found the right fit for us.  It has honestly been the best decision, and I cannot foresee making exorbitant payments to a health insurance company ever again.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Warren Joseph, DPM

I feel your pain! We were getting our insurance through my wife’s teaching job at a University. After she left the position, we have been on COBRA, which ran out September 30!  We have been looking for decent coverage for months. We found a reasonable “Short Term” catastrophic plan, which will only cover us for 3 months which started today. In the “Marketplace”, the best we could do was a BC/BS PPO Bronze plan at $1,900/mo and a $15,000 out-of-pocket deductible! Of course, there is only one provider, Independence Blue Shield. We hear that come Nov. 1 when Open Enrollment begins, 2 more insurers will enter the fray so maybe, just maybe, there will be some competition.

So, I can’t help you with any suggestions; but I can commiserate. I too would love to hear from anyone who may have some thoughts on obtaining coverage.
