R.I.C.E. Post Surgery Helps Control Pain: FL Podiatrist

"Ultimately, if a patient needs to undergo foot or ankle surgery, it clearly means something is wrong and requires medical correction or extraction. That in mind, we want to help patients feel good about their surgery and think about how better they will feel afterwards, versus the pain during healing," said Julio Ortiz, DPM, FACFAS, a Florida-based foot and ankle surgeon.

Dr. Julio Ortiz

In addition to medication, a tried and true method in controlling pain following foot or ankle surgery is to apply rest, ice, compression and elevation (R.I.C.E.). "Using the R.I.C.E method reduces swelling in the surgical area. By reducing the swelling, inflammation is minimized, which in large part lowers pain," added Dr. Ortiz.

NY Podiatrist Discusses the Dangers of Using Baby Foot

There are a few things you want to be aware of health-wise before using Baby Foot, a peel treatment. As the label warns, babies (because they already have "baby feet") and women who are pregnant should not use this. "There are parts of the developing fetus and uterus combination that might have desmosomes in them, and you don't want to break that up if it should enter the blood stream," podiatrist Dr. Dennnis Shavelson explains.

Dr. Dennis Shavelson

Also, if you have any deep heel issues, wounds, or infections on the foot, you shouldn't use this. Shavelson also recommends that those who are diabetic or have poor circulation should see a doctor before using it. You should also be aware of allergies before using it. An allergic reaction could result in soreness, itching, redness, and blistering. Shavelson compared it to a reaction to poison ivy. If you do have a reaction, you should consult a professional or go to the ER.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
9 Tips for Surviving after the ICD-10 Grace Period Ends- Part 4

Oct. 1, 2016. This date has likely been highlighted on many a calendar at physician practices around the country. That's because this date marks the end of the one-year grace period from CMS for practices' use of these new diagnostic codes for Medicare fee-for-service claims. In other words, the flexibility on not having to be specific in ICD-10 coding will end on this day:

4. New Codes are on the Horizon

"Keep in mind that [the grace period] was only for CMS and if there was already a National Coverage Determinations (NCD) or Local Coverage Determinations (LCD) in place, there was no grace period; those edits still triggered denials, so those were already worked out. I'm feeling confident that practices will do okay. That being said, we're coming out of the code set freeze and will have to work [more than] 1,400 new codes into our daily routines." -  Rhonda Buckholtz, CPC, vice president of strategic development at Salt Lake City, Utah-based AAPC

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Social Security Number Removal Initiative
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) requires CMS to remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new randomly generated Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number on new Medicare cards for transactions like billing, eligibility status, and claim status. Prepare for this change by visiting the new overview and provider webpages, which include: Transition period, Characteristics of the MBI, How to obtain the MBI.

What do you need to do to get ready? It’s time to look at your practice management systems and business processes and determine what changes you need to make to use the new MBI.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT)
RE: The Importance of Listening
From: Hal Ornstein, DPM

“If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two tongues and one ear.” -Mark Twain.

We've all had bad bosses - and poor communication is at the heart of the issue in many cases. Instead of speaking out orders in the office, amazing bosses practice active listening, a tool that many point to as the make or break factor for good communication.

Studies have even found that active listening accounts for 40% of leadership success. By actively listening with your eyes, ears, and heart, you're not only better understanding the information but letting the person speaking to you know that as well. When somebody else is talking, listen to what they are saying. Do not interrupt, talk over them, or finish their sentences. When the other person has finished talking, you may need to ensure that you have received their message accurately.

Hal Ornstein, DPM, Howell, NJ
