AZ Podiatrist Discusses How to Avoid Swollen Feet After Flying
Sitting in an enclosed area, such as a plane, train, or car, with limited room to move for a few hours can lead to swelling of your legs and ankles. “The longer you sit still, the more gravity pulls fluid down to your feet and ankles,” says Lauren Wurster, DPM, a doctor of podiatric medicine and an Arizona-based podiatrist. “Also, the position you are sitting in, with your legs bent, increases the pressure on the veins and increases swelling.”
|
Dr. Lauren Wurster |
The position of your legs when you are seated increases pressure in your leg veins, so avoid staying locked in one position for too long. Dr. Wurster advises shifting your seated position frequently. Once you’ve landed, you can use a lot of the same methods to reduce swelling. “Stay hydrated, move around, and wear compression socks,” says Wurster. “Also, be mindful of what you're eating and avoid foods too high in sodium, because that can also add to further swelling.”

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
WA Podiatrist Discusses Overuse Injuries in Children
“Overuse injuries are mainly just that they’re doing too much of a particular activity, and they tend to get tendonitis or joint inflammation,” says Jeffrey Boggs, DPM, a podiatrist at Western Washington Medical Group, as well as a youth sports coach and dad to three daughters who all played soccer. “In an adult or an older teenager, you may think of the basic plantar fasciitis. In the younger population, and by younger, I mean usually under 11 or 12, growth plate injuries are very common, with kids complaining of heel pain or medial arch pain.”
|
Dr. Jeffrey Boggs |
Whether they complain of pain or not, younger children who start to limp at the beginning of practice or right after practicing could be experiencing growth plate inflammation. “If a kid’s saying, ‘My heel really hurts,’ and if there’s limping, they probably should be seen by a professional to evaluate it,” says Dr. Boggs. An x-ray will show whether there is a growth plate injury, which will determine the course of treatment. The most common growth plate injuries involve the heel, followed by the medial arch.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
OH Podiatrist Is Founder of Dayton Has Sole, a Non-Profit
Two local organizations are teaming up to provide shoes for those in need. Dozens of homeless youth and young adults were fitted for new shoes on Monday at Daybreak Dayton. Dayton Has Sole is a new non-profit created by Jonathan White, DPM a local podiatrist, to provide new shoes to those in need. Dayton Has Sole is partnering with Up and Running to help provide the shoes.
|
Dr. Jonathan White |
Dr. White discovered while working at a federally qualified health center in the area that there was a huge limitation on patients' access to proper footgear. "So I was having difficulty treating their ailments because they couldn't get access to good shoes. So looking at community resources, really didn't have anything nationwide or in our area, and so I just went forward with creating it myself," said White.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Tips for Managing a Medical Practice Like a Pro
Running a private practice isn’t easy, but these strategies can help you cut complexity and reclaim your time.
4. Keep staff trained and supported
Even the best systems won’t help if staff aren’t confident using them. Regular training sessions and cross-training reduce knowledge gaps, help avoid errors, and boost morale. When employees feel supported and less bogged down by administrative tasks, practices see higher retention and better patient service.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY |
The Seven Deadly Sins of Wealth Management
These are "deadly" sins for a reason... any one of them can seriously jeopardize your chances of attaining the objectives that align with the hopes, dreams, and expectations specific to you.
Sin No. 4: Letting dollars be lazy
The positive corollary of this sin is the well-known budgeting phrase "every dollar needs a job." Your financial plan should outline who, what, and when money is for. When you do this work, you may discover that:
You're not yet saving enough. This is a top concern for most clients. "Am I saving enough to retire comfortably?" Saving and investing do require delayed gratification. You're not dreaming big enough. This may be surprisingly uncomfortable. Many people underspend what their financial plan accommodates. This may be because people experience losses with twice the intensity as they experience gains.
