AT THE COLLEGES |
NYCPM Participates in "Party in The Park" Health Fair
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) participated in one of Harlem's largest community events of the year, "Party on Park", on September 29, sponsored by Uptown Grand Central, which is a non-profit community organization dedicated to transforming East Harlem (NYC) into a healthy and thriving community through advocacy and collaboration with local businesses, community organizations, and healthcare providers.
|
(L-R) Naila Habeeb, Sebastian Sukdeo, Rivka Kesler, Tadudzwa Makota, Dr. Mohammed Gheith, Brandon Abizadeh, and Jamie Dee. |
NYCPM's Public Health Student Club staffed NYCPM's table to provide information on foot health, podiatry as a career, and conducted foot screenings. "NYCPM has long been focused on working with the local community in Harlem to improve the health and wellbeing of its residents and offering students various opportunities to interact with the community, as part of its community medicine and public health initiatives," said NYCPM Dean Michael Trepal, DPM.

Fat Pad Atrophy May Cause Heel Pain in Older Adults: NY Podiatrist
Bunions, corns, and curled-up hammertoes are among the more obvious causes of foot pain. But when it comes to your heels — a source of discomfort for almost 10 percent of adults age 50 and up — it may be less immediately clear. “Older patients often write it off as just another inevitable side-effect of aging or blame their heel pain on arthritis,” says Stephanie Hook, DPM, executive director of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. “But the typical area of pain is not at a joint, so arthritis is likely not the case.”
|
Dr. Stephanie Hook |
For older adults, in particular, heels might hurt as a result of what’s known as fat pad atrophy. This condition occurs when the protective fat pad on the bottom of the heel and the ball of the foot thins, which leaves the heel bone with less of its natural cushioning. “The heels absorb the majority of the impact every time your foot hits the ground,” Dr. Hook says. “So as the fat pad starts to decrease, heel pain can increase.”

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS |
NY Podiatrist Pens Second Novel
Elliot Udell, DPM has written his second novel titled It happened In Long Island: Antics of the Rich and Famous. The story centers on a Jewish girl from suburban Long Island, who gets a summer job working for one of the wealthiest, aristocratic, WASP families in America. Together with an Italian American girlfriend, they experience the antics of these people. Readers can see tennis matches, mansions, horse rides, romances, high society opera galas, and sailing excursions on the Long Island Sound. Behind all of this, however, is a milieu of racism, antisemitism, homophobia, xenophobia, and political corruption. Some of this bigotry is overt. In most cases, however, the hatred is subtle. Those guilty would be in complete denial.
|
Dr. Elliot Udell |
The book is filled with romances that last forever and others that are mere summer flings. There are hysterically funny scenes, as well as scenes filled with sadness and loss. The book's climax is a famed international sailboat race where young and old from diverse economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds join together despite petty prejudices and create a winning formula that defines American life.

MALPRACTICE NEWS |
Here's Why a PA Podiatrist Tendered His $1M Med Mal Policy
A Lehigh County podiatrist agreed to pay its full $1 million insurance policy to plaintiffs in a medical malpractice suit. The defendants settled the morning after plaintiffs counsel caught the plaintiff's doctor lying about his credentials.
The defendant represented on his website and CV that he was a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. The plaintiff's lawyer decided to double-check the doctor's purported affiliations. When he contacted the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, they told him that the defendant had not been involved with the organization since he was a student member and never became a fellow. The plaintiff's lawyer said it's important for attorneys to 'trust but verify.'

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS) |
From: Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM
I have to disagree with the premise that stretching is not required for runners. Therefore, I feel Dr. Secord's conclusions are partially incorrect. I will grant that there are runners who are fortunate not having to stretch. But this is not to say they could not benefit from a pre-activity stretch. In physiology, muscle length has an optimal function when completely stretched to its natural length. The muscle is only used when at a certain length (non-stretched); strength is only available at that level.
Also, not everyone is naturally flexible. I ran for over 40 years, always having to stretch to prevent injury. In my practice, in the Seattle area, many of my patients and non-patients (high school students training rooms, and at the University of Washington Sports Medicine Clinic under Stephen Rice, MD) required stretching prior to and after activity.
Muscle strains, tears. and ruptures can result from not stretching and not stretching properly. Two muscle, the Achilles tendon and the hamstrings are very susceptible to injury.

RESPNSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
Dr. Cinzio was the first podiatrist I ever met. I visited him as a patient and he relieved my pain. He also provided inspiration for me to enter the profession. He was a kind and knowledgeable professional with a gentle soul. My condolences to his family and may they celebrate his life. Rest in peace Joseph.
