MD Podiatrist Discusses Compression Socks
"Compression socks place constant pressure on the legs to prevent the accumulation of fluid; the compression is thought to help the blood circulate better which allows more oxygen to get to the tissues," says Priya Parthasarathy, DPM, a podiatrist who practices in Silver Spring, MD and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). "Many of my runner patients swear by them, stating that they reduce muscle fatigue and soreness, which in turn produces a faster recovery," she adds.
|
Dr. Priya Parthasarathy |
As a podiatric surgeon, Dr. Parthasarathy is on her feet all day, so she likes to wear compression socks underneath her scrubs. "I also wore them daily when I was pregnant to prevent varicose and spider veins. They definitely make my feet and legs feel much less tired," she says. However, Dr. Parthasarathy doesn't recommend that people with certain heart conditions, like congestive heart failure and arterial disease, wear compression socks.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
MA Podiatrist Participates in The Buddy Walk®
On September 28th, Louis J DeCaro, DPM, President of the American College of Foot & ankle Pediatrics participated in the Western Massachusetts Buddy Walk. The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro with one of the many participants of the Buddy Walk 2019 |
Dr. DeCaro was joined by many of his patients. During the walk, he discussed how the growing foot structure/shape in children with Down syndrome influences balance, gait, and a variety of foot conditions that can be treated during early development. Common symptoms include flat feet, pronation, foot/leg pain, toe-walking, in-toeing, and others. “Podiatric physicians offer an important role in quality of life for children with Down syndrome. It is important we get the word out,” says DeCaro.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
MI Podiatrist Charged in Healthcare Fraud Investigation
Kenneth Mitchell, DPM, 57, of Southfield, a licensed podiatrist and minority owner of Urban Health Care Group LLC of Southfield, was charged in a superseding indictment with one count of falsification of records in a federal investigation. These charges come in addition to Mitchell’s original charges filed Sept. 17 consisting of one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud and three counts of healthcare fraud. The charges stem from Mitchell’s alleged role in a $1.8 million scheme by which he and co-conspirators submitted false and fraudulent claims for medically unnecessary podiatry and other services on behalf of Urban Health Care Group LLC.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Have a Well-run Practice - Part 4
The daily grind of seeing patients can sometimes be, well, grinding. It’s important to take a step back and reconsider how you do things. There’s likely another way to achieve the same, if not better, result, especially when it comes to staffing. Here’s a sample of what 943 practice owners, managers, and physicians say has helped them create a better environment.
4. Set the bar high but be a cheerleader and coach to help your employees be successful. You get what you pay for, so skimp at your own risk.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Is Synvisc Use Off-Label for Ankle Arthritis
Is using Synvisc (or its generic form) for ankle arthritis is considered off-label use or not?
Russell L. McKinley, DPM,, Elizabethtown, KY
Editor's Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. According to the package insert, "SYNVISC (hylan g-f 20) is indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics, e.g., acetaminophen." Nowhere in the package insert does it mention "ankle", so it must be inferred that using hylan g-f 20 in the ankle is an off-label use.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Robert S. Schwartz, C. Ped.
Since 1973, pedorthists like me have sat on the sidelines of this discussion and approach to helping our patients, clients, and customers. Foot health professionals can significantly improve their biomechanical skills by watching their patients stand and walk with shoes on and off. Evaluating their worn shoes is equally as effective. Shoes-on...check for fit. Shoes-off...check wear patterns, areas of high and low pressure, and shear. Check the effect of size, style, heel, design and construction, and any removable insoles on their foot problems. Try the above in your practice and your biomechanical skills will fly.
I represent the lion's share of pedorthists who are proud to work side-by-side with podiatrists and others in our communities to help improve patient outcomes.
Robert S. Schwartz, CPed, NY, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Dale Feinberg, DPM
People, wake up and take off your rose-colored glasses. The government has stolen your intellectual knowledge and pimped you out. You get to spend your time determining the patient needs a new brace, write a lengthy note detailing your thought process, cast the patient, dispense the brace, pay the lab fee out of YOUR pocket, and then fight with Medicare to be paid. The logical answer is to have the patient sign an ABN, pay for the brace upfront, put some skin in the game, and fight Medicare for reimbursement. You can always refer these cases to your friends and let them fund Medicare benefits out of their over-the-top private practice incomes.
Dale Feinberg, DPM, Yuma, AZ
