MI Podiatrist Discusses Conservative Treatment of Hallux Rigidus
Hallux rigidus, also known as big toe arthritis, is the most common arthritis found in the foot. In fact, it’s so common that it’s likely either you or someone you know will suffer from this type of arthritis at some point in their life. “Once you have any pain inside a joint that won’t go away and you can’t explain, it’s time to seek treatment,” said Karl Dunn, DPM, a podiatrist with Compass Orthopedics who performs surgery at McLaren Greater Lansing.
|
Dr. Karl Dunn |
“I will see patients in my office for a physical exam, and then we typically take an x-ray to get a good look at the toe joint and the cartilage around it,” said Dr. Dunn. “There are many things that we can do to make it feel better and prolong the need for surgery.” Most people think that if they visit a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, surgery is the only answer. However, in reality, there are many different options that can be explored before surgery, including injections, over-the-counter medicines, changes in footwear, and orthotics.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
NY Podiatrist Launches Toddler Shoe Line
As children learn to walk, many parents have questions about what kinds of shoes will work best for their fledgling toddler. That’s what inspired local podiatrist Breeann Wilson, DPM, to launch her own brand of shoes, called Pure Peds, to address the need for supportive children’s walking shoes.
|
Dr. Breeann Wilson |
At Dr. Wilson’s podiatry practice in Buffalo, she often advises parents who ask about footwear for their child, but common designer brands can be difficult to put on and keep on young toddlers’ chubbier, wider feet. Most baby shoes also lack ankle support. So, Wilson had the idea to turn back to the “old-school” walking shoe, but with a fresh look.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips for Navigating the ACO Landscape
If a medical practice is looking to join an ACO in 2025, they should start their considerations well in advance so they can stay ahead of this year’s August 1st deadline for participation in CMS models in 2025. This timeline allows for comprehensive research and analysis, ensuring that practices align with an ACO that best suits their needs. ACOs can also have a lot of similarities on paper, but with a deliberate approach, providers can avoid the pitfalls of rushing into a decision and instead focus on understanding what each ACO offers, how they manage and operate, and speak to references within the network.
4. Provider and ACO engagement are keys to success
To maximize the benefits of being part of an ACO, providers and their care teams should be actively engaged in the process. A shift away from the traditional fee-for-service mindset is crucial, as practices that actively engage in value-based care and collaborate with their ACO tend to yield better outcomes. To be most successful, practices should view engagement as a two-way street, where the ACO actively supports practices in transitioning to value-based care and, in turn, providers invest more effort in enhancing their performance. It is important to ask questions to understand the level of engagement and transparency that the ACO will have with providers to ensure expectations on both sides are set early.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
It’s time to really look at the APMA budget and see where money can be re-allocated. Currently, $290K is spent on advertising, and $457K on pensions of employees - True Marketing/Advertising has never been more reasonable - Social Media, DPM influencers, etc. should be tried.
So here’s a few ideas for APMA to consider re-allocating money and I’d love others to make suggestions:
1) APMA - exit the seminar business, and leave it to others; this, will leave significant money available. Currently $750 thousand was spent last year.
2) Limit travel of board members to regional/state meetings and use telecommunication to allow more members to get involved. $1.2 million was spent on travel last year.
