REMEMBERING 9/11 |
NY Podiatrists Recite at the Calling of the Names Ceremony
In 2016, volunteers from the 2001-2002 St. Paul’s Chapel World Trade Center Relief Ministry created the first Calling of the Names Ceremony. Their intention was to honor all deceased 9/11 Rescue and Recovery Workers and Volunteers by having a ceremony similar to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum’s annual ceremony. They felt it meaningful to do so on the anniversary itself, and at St. Paul’s Chapel where many responders found respite.
|
(L-R) Drs. Kathy Reilly Fallon, Arthur Gudeon, and Wilma Hunt-Watts |
On this, the twentieth anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our nation Arthur Gudeon, DPM, Kathy Reilly Fallon, DPM, and Wilma Hunt-Watts, DPM were honored to recite the names at the “6th Annual Calling of the Names Ceremony.” These podiatrists served as volunteers at St. Paul’s Chapel and rendered foot, ankle, and wound care to the NYPD, NYFD, Iron/Steel workers, and other recovery personnel.

Novel Diabetic Foot Ulcer Cream Shows Promise in Phase 3 Trial
ON101 (Fespixon, Oneness Biotech), a first-in-class, macrophage-regulating, wound-healing cream for diabetic foot ulcers has shown benefit over absorbent dressings in a phase 3 trial, with another trial ongoing. The product became available in Taiwan on July 4, 2021, after receiving regulatory approval from the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) based on efficacy and safety findings in a three-country phase 3 clinical trial.
|
Dr. Shawn Cazzell |
"Patients in the United States can access this new drug via the expanded access program or by participating in the second phase 3 trial in the United States," added co-author Shawn M. Cazzell, DPM, chief medical officer, Limb Preservation Platform, Fresno, California, who is involved with both trials. It is "exciting" to have a new therapy for diabetic foot ulcers, said Cazzell, because they are serious and life-threatening.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Six Things to NEVER Say to a Patient
Here’s your guide to six common phrases physicians too often say to patients, but shouldn’t:
4. “We can’t find your chart.” It may seem harmless enough, and perhaps you are hoping to score points for an honest explanation for the delay, but surely no patient likes to hear this phrase, particularly if he’s laying on a gurney with an IV in his arm in the operating room. If you find yourself muttering these words often, you’re doing a disservice to your patients and your practice. Perhaps it’s finally time to transition to an EHR.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Steven Finer, DPM
I agree with Dr. Lang. I have seen this show about six times. When I would see a new patient, the initial exam was face-to-face with the patient's shoes on. The patient would remove their own socks and shoes (except for the physically disabled). Of course, I often looked at the shoes for diagnostic purposes.
Patients were seen separately, minors excepted, or for translation situations. Injections were always given with the patient face down. I feel these two podiatrists were chosen for their competence and also good looks.
Steven Finer, DPM, Philadelphia, PA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
The article “Let's Heal That Wound...and Get Paid to Do It” by Michael King, DPM contains an erroneous passage. It states the following: "You cannot dispense this (this referring to collagen dressings) on the same day as an ulcer debridement and expect it (the collagen dressing) to be paid. This is factually incorrect. Neither the CGS and other DME MAC LCDs on surgical dressings nor their attached policy articles make a reference to such a citation. In fact, the CGS policy states the following:
"If dressing changes are sent home with the beneficiary (they mean by the entity performing the debridement), claims for these dressings may be submitted. In this situation, use the place of service corresponding to the beneficiary's residence; Place of Service Office (POS=11) must not be used."
While Dr. King's observations may be true for certain other carriers (Medicare Advantage and other third-party payers), this is not true for Fee for Service Medicare which allows the initial DOS for billing and on receipt of delivery to coincide with the date of debridement for all surgical dressings (collagen or otherwise). It is simply that any dressing applied as part of the professional service (debridement or E/M) is not to be included in the billing.
It is advisable to set some stock aside that is always used for in-office professional services and another inventory of surgical dressings which are always used to send home with the patient. Having set up your inventory in this manner will be quite helpful in case of an audit, making it very easy to prove that certain materials were not billed out when used as part of your professional service and others were.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
Dr. McGuigan was one of my students at TUSPM (PCPM) and one of my residents. He was a bright individual, a gentleman of the highest order, a man of integrity, compassion, a strong advocate for the profession. He earned a place in a special training program with the New Jersey State Health Department with the diabetes program under the directorship of Dr. Arthur Krosnick. His ethics were of the highest caliber. He brought to our profession a record of outstanding community involvement.
May he rest in peace and may we bless his memory. And, may he never be forgotten.
Arthur E. Helfand, DPM
