The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 39th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. (NOT AI generated) Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

NYCPM Has Two Sets of Twins
Enrolling in the Fall semester in the Class of 2028 at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) are Jessicaa Maxwell and Jessena Maxwell. Lifelong Yankee fans, Jessica and Jessena hail from Bronx, New York. Jessena graduated from the University of Rochester and majored in biology. Jessica attended the University of Buffalo and graduated with a major in bio-chemistry. While attending separate undergraduate universities, each sister independently researched and discovered the world of podiatry.

Suzanne Fuchs, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist, explains that “running shoes for flat feet are specifically designed to provide additional support and stability to individuals with flat arches or overpronation. Shoes should provide adequate support for flat arches, which may include firmer midsoles or built-in arch supports to prevent overpronation,” says Dr. Fuchs.

When shopping for running shoes for flat feet, ensuring they fit properly is essential. According to Fuchs, running shoes for flat feet should be snug and suppress any unwanted foot movement from occurring while running.

8 Tips for Avoiding Employee Handbook Crises
Many medical practices have an employee handbook, or employee policy handout, but fail to update them on a regular basis. There have been a large number of changes to employment law over the past couple of years. Here are some items you should be sure to include:
5. Harassment - Do you have a policy that says harassment should be reported to the manager or supervisor? Just keep in mind that the manager/supervisor could be the person harassing the employee. You might want the employee to have the option of reporting to the office manager or doctor. They need a way to report that does not affect their job in any way.
The handbook should make clear that you will not tolerate harassment, and if any employee experiences or observes harassment, it should be reported immediately. The last thing you need is for a terminated employee to complain about unreported harassment and then enlist another employee to confirm their statement. Since your handbook should require that both employees must report harassment immediately, it would be more difficult for an employee to win a legal case if it was not reported until after the employee was disciplined.

I rarely bill CPT 11721. If it's for covered foot care, I will bill 11720 with 11719 or G0127. If not covered foot care, but eligible mycotic nail debridement, I will bill 11720 for only one toenail and charge the patient out-of-pocket ($50) for services to the remaining nails. Last year, I underwent a Medicare audit (passed with flying colors).
When I was asked by the RN why I was only billing 11720, I explained that I charged the patient to pay for services rendered to the other nails. I cannot routinely justify that someone has SIX or more toenails that are so thick and painful that they cannot walk or wear their shoes, especially after the first visit.

The federal government killed a plan in 2014 which would have discouraged Medicare Advantage health insurers from overcharging by reviewing patient records for additional diagnoses. CMS apparently dropped the regulatory plan after an "uproar" from the insurance industry.
As a result, Medicare Advantage plans continued to overcharge Medicare for unsupported diagnoses based upon chart reviews for at least $5 Billion per year over the next ten years.

I see in small font there is a “disclaimer," but even so, almost weekly, I have a patient with a chemical burn, sometimes even deep to the subcutaneous tissue. What am I missing here? Why are these things still on the market? I appreciate your honest, factual responses. It can't solely be for the company’s bottom line that makes them.
